ONE OF THE BEST IN THE SHORT SERIES.

THE CASE OF THE VELVET CLAWS was made for mystery buffs, and if you have a sense of humor... Perry and Della are now MARRIED.

Both get themselves involved in a neat murder case involving a gentleman who is murdered twice! A gem from the pen of Erle Stanley Gardner. Guessing whodunit is extremely difficult here, precisely what Mr. Gardner had intended.

Interestingly, the "creative" writers at Warner Brothers had other plans. Perry is no longer single, he loves an afternoon cocktail or two, always smokes and is the dapper man about town. Actually, the writers, in a way, patterned Mason after Nick Charles (William Powell) in THE THIN MAN. And if you watch Warren William, truly a terrific actor, he does remind you of William Powell. Gardner was not too fond of re-vamping his courtroom hero, however, this is one unforgettable mystery with a host of red herrings --- and wait for the ending. It's worth it.

By the way, Spudsy "accidentally' burns up Perry's retainer of 5,000 dollars! ---and Della lights her cigarette with a burning 1,000 bill! Yes, more creative writing. It's doubtful Gardner wrote that scene in his book, but it's simply hilarious.

Great supporting cast of familiar faces, including Claire Dodd (as Della), Winifred Shaw as the mystery lady with a gun and Clara Blandick as the witty judge who marries Perry and Della. Blandick would soon be cast as Dorothy's mother in the WIZARD OF OZ. This was also Williams final appearance as Mason, and he WAS having fun with his role. It shows. Sorry, Mr. Gardner, but thank you Warner Brothers.
