Five Good Seasons! One Mediocre Season!

Great series! I was born in the 1960s and grew up watching this 'Movie of the Week' that alternated with Columbo (another fave of mine) and McCloud. Notice a Scottish and Italian theme in the weekly movies back then? I loved the first 5 seasons and would rate them 8 stars. The final season, maybe 6 stars. The first 5 were McMillan and Wife. He was a police commissioner and, together with his wife, would solve a different crime each episode. From what I've read, she was kind of a pain to work with. She didn't get along with her co-star. And, she bugged the studio trying to get her hair-stylist husband a screen credit (they told her no). Then she was pregnant in two different seasons (Season 1 and Season 3 or 4, can't remember which one). Kind of hard to explain without writing a child into the show. Which, would have hampered the couples crime fighting lifestyle. I can understand why they got rid of her. But, the show did suffer without her. She brought realism. They had an on-air chemistry that doesn't happen very often. You really believed they were a madly in love couple. Season 6, she and their never seen on air child 'died in a plane crash' and Mac (his nickname) began dating other women. The show went downhill fast and that was the last season. I have the DVD's out now and I watch it every year or two. It's held up to the test of time!
