. . . 1971 feature film, Ken Russell's THE DEVILS. When title character Alice winds up trapped in a barrel with her symbolic nether region, Julius the pussycat, what viewer will NOT be reminded of all the birthday-suited sisters sporting glass bottles containing stinging bees attached to their exposed chests? Both ALICE GETS STUNG and THE DEVILS are carefully crafted to appeal to prurient interests, and neither is suitable for children or family men. Some may argue that THE DEVILS is more overt in its misogynistic messaging, but it can be argued that subtle film offerings disseminated to a more general audience are even more insidious due to their subliminal suggestions.
