Desperado (1995)
7/10
Crazy and typical Rodriguez fare
4 December 2021
I have never seen the original EL MARIACHI, however I bumped on this movie casually when I found it on Netflix one day and I think it's one of those sequels you can watch without having seen the predecessor first.

It begins with Steve Buscemi (his character named after him) that goes in a saloon and tells to all the attendants the story of when he saw a stranger with a guitar that seemed faceless. After this story the stranger now known as the Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) arrives and he has come for avenging the death of his wife and kill the drug dealers that worked for his old enemy El Bucho. He will succedd, but not after a lot of crazy situations (I won't spoil them).

While not excellent like FROM DUSK TILL DAWN this was still a nice film helmed by Rodriguez. And, as you might expect from any of his movies (except the SPY KIDS and SHARKBOY AND LAVAGIRL), there are lots of blood splattered (also for comedy effect), explosions, mayhem, brawls and more. All the cast members (Buscemi, Banderas, Salma Hayek, Quentin Tarantino in a flashy cameo, Danny Trejo as a mute assassin) looked like they were having lots of fun. The soundtrack was at times funny and adequate for the many crazy situations.

So, while not essentially high art, it's just one of those turn off your brain and enjoy movies. And here the violence is not really a problem.
