Sad story of a narcissistic man's emotional abuse of a naive woman.
A country pastor (Pierre Blanchard) has a wife, four children, and a congregation, but it's not enough for him -- he seizes upon an obsession in adopting a blind orphan girl, who, as she grows into a beautiful woman, becomes the focus of his existence.
When his son, Jacques (Jean Desailly), who has been away at school, and become a virtuosic organist, falls in love with Gertrude (Michele Morgan), the pastor forbids the marriage, in effect estranging himself from everyone. Even a horribly guilt-ridden Gertrude can't stay.
The movie ends on a terrifying note of psychological alienation.
One can only pray for the world's protection from blindly self-centered men.
