After the end of the war, Marines Cliff Harper (Guy Madison) and William Tabeshaw (Robert Mitchum) return to civilian life. Many returnees face personal issues. Cliff is introduced to Pat Ruscomb (Dorothy McGuire) and they quickly hit it off.

Guy Madison is basically a white bread leading man in the old Hollywood mold. He smiles too much. They picked the wrong guy. That happens.
