After the end of the war, Marines Cliff Harper (Guy Madison) and William Tabeshaw (Robert Mitchum) return to civilian life. Many returnees face personal issues. Cliff is introduced to Pat Ruscomb (Dorothy McGuire) and they quickly hit it off.

I'm mostly waiting for Robert Mitchum when the movie concentrates on Cliff. Decades later, it's easy to proclaim Mitchum as the bigger star. Guy Madison is basically a white bread leading man in the old Hollywood mold. He smiles too much. They picked the wrong guy. That happens. This preceded the better known The Best Years of Our Lives which covers similar themes. Being first is not always the best.
