Goodbye (I) (2022)
7/10
Funny, endearing and moving

This was a beautiful film about grieving. It did not take an exploitative route in exploring emotions post the passing of a beloved, but took me through a heartfelt mix of denial, anger, confusion, pain, memories that one might feel, post the departure.

Bachchan is beyond top notch. He is the grieving husband, the disappointed and often angry father and he has essayed this to perfection. For much of the film, he is silent and communicates the inner turmoil through his facial expressions. What an actor.

Rashmika Mandhana is unidimensional, a rebel without a cause. I felt the least connect with her actions and could not understand her motivations. Another thing that I could not understand the logic for was an interfaith relationship angle, here. It felt quite unnecessary and forced.

There are a lot of superb supporting acts. Highest credit to Vikas Bahl, who has penned something which seems to be extremely close to his heart and mind. There are many witty situations and to elicit a chuckle out of the audience, in the midst of a funeral, without going for cheap jokes, is quite the achievement.

I was anticipating a boring drama. It turned out to be an intelligent, often funny, endearing and moving film about the one immutable truth of life, death.
