Not as good as "Voyage to the Moon", but still pretty special in places
21 November 2022
"Le voyage à travers l'impossible", also known as "An Impossible Voyage", was Georges Melies follow up to his forever-famous "Journey to the Moon", with its iconic shot of the bullet-shaped space rocket hitting the moon in the eye.

Unfortunately, "An Impossible Voyage" isn't as interesting as that film, and has probably been forgotten because of that. It doesn't have the same sense of story that "Journey to the Moon" had, where we felt like we were going on the voyage with the astronomers (not astronauts - had that term even been invented yet?). We followed them from their labs to their rocket to the moon, and then back to Earth under the ocean, and finally on dry land.

Here I didn't feel as though I was part of the journey. This made it kind of a chore to sit through, though the movie does boast another splendid animated scene with an anthropomorphised heavenly body - yes, it's the sun this time. I also liked the shots of the cross-section of the train, if that's what it was, that the guys took to the moon, and the scene where it launched into space.
