Is this an innovative take on A Christmas Carol? No.
Does this have anything new to say? No.
Script? Average. Moral? Predictable. Substance? None.
But style? AMAZING.
First off, this is a musical version of A Christmas Carol, and it does a great job at that. The songs are fun to listen to and the voice cast does a FANTASTIC job. Luke Evans steals the show from the first song and it only gets better from there. All of the cast give it their all in their performances and you can really hear it. The only one that was less than perfect was Tiny Tim, but the kid is sick so whatever.
Along with the amazing voices with the songs, the visuals are also amazing. The animators really gave 110% when it came to animating these songs, they are just so beautiful to watch. They really went all out when it came to the style for all of these songs, with each getting their own unique stage and sequence. If you don't feel up for a whole movie, I'd just watch the soundtrack on youtube.
The animation outside of the songs is also really good. It definitely has a cutting-edge-for-the-time vibe where it looks practically perfect but most likely will age a bit in a few years, but watching it now it looks amazing. The character design is also really nice, with all of them being super expressive and unique. The ghosts especially, but even the human characters have their charms.
I also really appreciate the diversity, that's a nice touch as well. There are a few good jokes and site gags in there as well but nothing too deep. I'm not sure exactly how faithful it is to the book, but it seems to be pretty faithful for the most part.
In summary, if you're looking to watch literally any Christmas movie, this is a good pick. Be careful about showing it to little kids as it has some moments with the ghosts that might scare the kids a bit (it's rated 7+ for fear) but for a family watch on a random night, it's a good pick. Nothing special, but a good one time watch.
