Brett's well documented ill-health in this final series is clear for all to see. But this fact is far from the main problem and what we're given here is very much a case of style over substance, featuring some quite frankly bizarre framing compositions, strange double-exposure reflections, and colours cast over the actors' faces. Many of the episodes are tedious and feel somewhat removed from the great detective and his sidekick.
Ultimately then it's a series for the completist. Personally I found them too much like hard work and much prefer to revisit the earlier outings, in which Doyle's stories are adapted simply, without the distractions that plagued this final.
