I'll admit to being a hopeless romantic, and wishing that Millie Theale (well played by Alison Elliott) would have survived, Merton Densher (Linus Roache) would have loved her for herself, without a thought for her money, and they'd have a traditional "happily ever after". Such are the stuff of dreams!
Still, the reality was a good movie, though I like to see Helena Bonham Carter in more sympathetic roles, rather than playing the cold, calculating Kate Croy. I also would have liked to see Elizabeth McGovern in better than the thankless role of nurse/companion.
I caught a familiar face; Charlotte Rampling plays the role of Kate's Aunt Maude with her usual flair.
A good adaptation of the Henry James novel. If, however, you're looking for that happy ending, look elsewhere.
