Warning: Spoilers
When the corpse of a dentist is found, the police declares that the victim died as a result of an accident. The dentist's assistant however believes that her boss was murdered, although even she finds it hard to think of anyone who would have wanted to kill such a decent and friendly person. In despair, she contacts a private detective...

"The fat man" is a pleasantly watchable thriller mystery about a private detective who gets presented with an unusually tricky case. The cast is quite intriguing. J. Scott Smart, while not surpassingly fat, does very well as the gourmet protagonist who sustains his intellect through the intake of large helpings of fine food. (Well do I understand his reasoning. I've always been convinced that Mankind functions better on a luscious slice of apple pie with whipped cream than on an apple alone.) Do watch out for a very young Rock Hudson, already a thing of beauty... The intrigue, part of which is being told through a series of flashbacks, is well-plotted. Feel free to read as many reviews as you want but beware of spoilers, since the story unfolds in some VERY unexpected ways.

Unfortunately "The fat man" is not quite as funny as it thinks it is. There are a number of witty lines and scenes, but much of the comic relief should have been tossed straight in the waste bin. The private detective's assistant/chauffeur is particularly annoying. Consequently I'd advise you to watch the movie for its cunning plot, rather than for its forays into humor.
