Just a bit much, in the end. It gets incredibly rambly, and yes, very few people can play manic characters as well as Gena Rowlands. But at a point, it wore me out, and not in a way I really appreciated either.
Call it sacrilegious, but I think there's a much better 100-minute-long film in here somewhere, and even though I found much of this frustrating and tedious, there was a good deal I could appreciate.
I'm accepting that John Cassavetes just probably isn't for me, because his style is never one I can get into or really feel immersed within. But this is also a personal film that feels like he made it for him, and anyone else who can feel the film the way he probably felt it should count themselves lucky.
