6/10
the 1970's in the 1880's

Director Robert Altman is doing Buffalo Bill (Paul Newman) and his Wild West show. It's the arrival of Sitting Bull which happened in 1885.

This is a Robert Altman film which means a large cast and people sometimes talk over each other. It's a bit rambling, but that's the man's style. I do have an issue with Paul Newman's performance. I expected someone much more bombastic and a real showman. Newman is doing his cool guy persona but tired. It's not what I want. I want him to be constantly yelling at people or peacocking around like he owned the place. Altman is doing dour and drained like the 1970's have infected this other time period. Altman is entitled, but I just think that these are supposed to be circus people. They are entertainers first and foremost. Sitting Bull's first performance is probably the most compelling moment of the movie. Annie Oakley's misses are a little funny. Newman is sad. It's two hours. It's Altman.
