Warning: Spoilers
The book was so clever, real, and well written but the tv version has omitted all of the nuance and character elements that were so integral to the book. There is not a hint of the soulmate connection between Elizabeth and Calvin conveyed in the novel and they have padded the tv series with things such as the beauty pageant and new characters and have lost all if the book's charm in the process. For some reason the tv version has also rearranged parts of the book and replaced the neighbor character for someone completely different for no apparent reason. Larson is well cast in the lead role and puts her usual flat affect to good use. If I hadn't read the book I would be very confused by this mangled production as Zott would just come off like a sociopath instead of the beaten down tortured soul she is in the book. This adaptation just butchers the book. It's as if they tore out the book pages, threw them in the air, and assembled a script in no particular order. The central theme of the book is about overcoming adversity and finding one's self respect. Extremely disappointing.
