¨Evita" is the story of Argentina's most controversial First Lady, Eva Perón (1919 - 1952.) Her awe-inspiring funeral, attended by seven million devoted followers, is the opening to the musical, with the narrator then brining the story back by over a decade, explaining how a B-movie actress became the object of such controversial devotion. The hit musical based on the life of Eva Perón (Evita Duarte), a B-picture Argentinian actress who eventually became the wife of Argentinian president Juan Domingo Perón. Evita (Madonna in a role she was born to play) leaves her rural home for Buenos Aires in the company of Latin singer Agustin Magaldi (Jimmy Nail) , eventually becoming the wife of President Juan Peron and a heroine to the people of Argentina, getting adoration and love from the workers and descamisados . On February 24 1946, Perón is elected president with a huge majority and Evita becomes a would-be champion of the people, even as the government ruthlessly supresses their freedoms. Throughout it all, the attractive first lady is lavishly costumed and she is accused of being a distraction for the people, rather than an aid, by the embittered and cynical narrator (Antonio Banderas.) The Most Anticipated Motion Picture Event of The Year !.

A film musical adaptation of the hit Broadway musical depicting the infamous real-life story of Eva "Evita" Duarte de Peron, the wife of President Juan Peron, who rose from poverty to become the most famous Argentine woman in history. Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera about the life and death of Eva finally comes to the big screen with all its extravaganza intact. The musical is a story of romances, Coups d'état, military and politics, showing all the battles and triumphs Evita has in her short, but hectic life. There's almost no dialogue and in between high-points, things do seem to be droning on and on. The songs are glorious, but the narrative is bloated and repetitive, though sustains its inspriation and atractive enough. In the title role Madonna plays an ambitious poor girl willing to do anything to make her mark in this version by sleeping her way up the ladder of power to argentine strongman Juan Domingo Peron : Jonathan Pryce as wax dummy. Madonna is pretty well in fine voice , better than expected, and dressed in the latest high fashion but unflatteringly lit. The surprisingly strong-voiced is everyman narrator Che , changed from the stage version's revolutionary Che Guevara. Banderas gives an emphatic enuntiation perhaps to make his English as clear as possible. Filmmaker Alan Parker has a cameo as a frustrated film director attempting to work with Evita. The highlight is still Evita's balcony scene, singing¨Don't cry for me Argentine¨, but some of the other songs are drwned by loud orchestration. The're many enjoyable songs, such as: A cinema en Buenos Aires; Oh what a circus; Requiem for Evita; Rainbow High; The Money Kept Rolling In; On this night of a thousand stars; Eva and Magadi; Eva beware of the city; Buenos Aires; Another suitcase in another hall; Goodnight and thank you.

'Evita' contains a colorful and evocative cinematograpy by cameraman Darius Khondji. The motion picture was well directed by Alan Parker (1944-2020). Alan Parker was a good writer and director who made some nice and successful -at times- movies , such as : "Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Fame , Shoot the Moon , Pink Floyd : The Wall , Birdy , Mississippi Burning , Come See the Paradise, The Commitments , The Road to Wellville , Evita, Angela's asses , The Life of David Gale" , among others . Rating : 7/10. Better than average . The pic will appeal to Madonna and Antonio Banderas fans .
