Love & hate amongst the sponges
29 January 2024
Who'd have suspected that the sponge diving industry would be so cutthroat, but Wagner's life as a young, carefree Greek diver and trawler hand is thrown into disarray when a series of harrowing events spoil his idyllic lifestyle. Now evergreen Hollywood veterans Wagner (complete with dyed-black mane) and Moore star in what is otherwise an insipid romantic melodrama that spends too long on dry ground when its best action (including a brief tussle with an octopus) is under the sea.

Contemporary movie stars Roland and Boone have less screen time but more impact as their respective fathers, trying to keep the exuberant young-uns out of trouble. Peter Graves has the best of the roles on offer, playing a jealous rival whose disapproval of the Greeks escalates into more violent exploits that threaten the fragile civility between the two feuding cultures.

Exotic location work is exceptionally well photographed and the underwater scenery is breathtaking, but it's not enough to compensate for the lack of material and a meandering plot that is potentially twenty minutes overlong. Picturesque but pointless coming-of-age saga.
