Melancholic Ghost Story
22 March 2024
The famous writer of supernatural stories Frank Scarlatti returns from Los Angeles to his hometown, Willowpoint Falls. He asks the taxi driver to stop at a cemetery to see two tombs and the driver asks if he believes in what he writes. Frank tells him a story that happened in 1962, when he was a boy (Lukas Haas). On the Halloween Eve, his schoolmates Donald (Jared Rushton) and Louie (Gregory Levinson) lock him in a school cloak room as a prank. Late night, he sees the ghost of a little girl named Melissa and then a man searching something on the ventilation duct on the floor. When the stranger sees the Halloween masked Frankie, he tries to kill him. Unconscious, Frankie travels with the ghost of Melissa. Out of the blue, his father revives him with CPR and Frankie goes to the hospital. The black janitor Harold Williams (Henry Harris) is arrested since he was drunken in the basement. When Frankie is recovering at home, his brother Geno (Jason Presson) brings the newspaper and Frankie learns that eleven children have been murdered and the crimes never resolved. He decides to return to the cloak room to look for what the stranger was searching and finds some toys and a graduation ring that he believes belongs to the killer. But he continues to be haunted by the ghost of Melissa, who is looking for her mother.

"Lady in White" is a melancholic ghost story, with the plot based on a predator serial killer that has killed eleven children. The story shows the racism in the 60's in USA and the poor janitor Harold Williams is murdered by a white female, but the consequences of her act are never shown. The aunt of Melissa is another victim of the sick killer. The talented Lukas Haas has an impressive performance for a child, in a difficult role. My vote is seven.
