The main interest in this picture lies in its truth

In this we have a beautiful story of California during the reconstruction days following its cession to the United States. It presents vivid pictures of the Spanish grandee life, just passing away, and the unscrupulous land-grabbers who in many instances succeeded in securing valuable estates because the Spanish owners would not register their properties as required by law. The main interest in this picture lies in its truth. There is no love story, and when the American agent shoots the land grabber to prevent him committing intentional murder the audience is ready to applaud. The actors have caught the spirit of the time and occasion, and the setting is picturesque and interesting. - The Moving Picture World, May 20, 1911
