From the currently playing Their Finest to the likes of Bowfinger and Boogie Nights, we salute the movies about making movies...
If you haven't caught up yet, Their Finest is currently playing in UK cinemas and it's a gorgeous little love letter to perseverance through storytelling, set against the backdrop of a film production office at the British Ministry of Information during the Second World War. Based on Lissa Evans' novel, Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy play characters whose access to the film industry has been contingent on the global crisis that takes other young men away from such trifling matters, and it's a real joy to watch.
Among other things, the film got us thinking about other films about making films. We're not talking about documentaries, even though Hearts Of Darkness, the documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now, may be the greatest film about...

The National Film Registry announced this week its annual selection of 25 films and recordings to add to the permanent collection of the Library of Congress, and among them are old Hollywood classics, recent Oscar winners, and beloved '80s favorites.
Highlights of this year's inductees include comedy classic "Ghostbusters" and Tom Cruise's iconic flick "Top Gun." Awards bait fare "Shawshank Redemption" (which nabbed seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture) and "L.A. Confidential" (which took home the Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay trophies) also made the 2015 cut.
There are always a few quirky additions, too, and this year's crop is no different. A recording that Thomas Edison made of a sneeze in 1894 is a new inductee, as is a short animated film from Disney called "The Story of Menstruation," which was shown in American schools as part of health education classes in the 1940s (and was...

Nooooo. I almost forgot to share the National Film Registries new titles. Each year they add 25 pictures that are deemed historically, culturally or aesthetically important. Each year I suggest that we should watch all the titles together. Well, the ones we can find at least. Perhaps we'll actually do that for 2016 -- you never know! Getting a spot on the National Film Registry is more symbolic than active. It does not guarantee preservation or restorations but it does suggest that these films should all be preserved and/or restored.
The 2015 additions are:
Edison Kinetoscopic Record of a Sneeze (1894) - watch it now. it's six seconds long... the earliest surviving copyrighted film Dream of a Rarebit Fiend (1906) -watch it now. (7 minutes) from a short Winsor McCay comic strip A Fool There Was (1915) -watch it now. (66 minutes) Theda Bara tempts a married man! It's always the woman's fault, don't you know Humoresque...

Since 1989, the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress has been accomplishing the important task of preserving films that “represent important cultural, artistic and historic achievements in filmmaking.” From films way back in 1897 all the way up to 2004, they’ve now reached 675 films that celebrate our heritage and encapsulate our film history.
Today they’ve unveiled their 2015 list, which includes classics such as Douglas Sirk‘s melodrama Imitation of Life, Hal Ashby‘s Being There, and John Frankenheimer‘s Seconds. Perhaps the most popular picks, The Shawshank Redemption, Ghostbusters, Top Gun, and L.A. Confidential were also added. Check out the full list below.
Being There (1979)
Chance, a simple-minded gardener (Peter Sellers) whose only contact with the outside world is through television, becomes the toast of the town following a series of misunderstandings. Forced outside his protected environment by the death of his wealthy boss, Chance subsumes his late employer’s persona,...

Bend, Ore. — Musicians have objected and the number of paying customers is down, so the Old Mill District in Bend will no longer allow concert-goers to sit across the Deschutes River and get a free show from the likes of Pink Martini, the Steve Miller Band, Norah Jones and Zz Top.
For 11 summer seasons, the Central Oregon concert venue has allowed people to congregate in the area of grass and paved recreation path on the east side of the river, but that will stop Sunday with a performance by Michael Franti & Spearhead at Les Schwab Amphitheater, The Bulletin newspaper reported ( ). http://is.gd/DTAuBF
In an era when music acts make their money on tour rather than from recordings, said venue manager Marney Smitth, "we're getting a reputation that we want to nip in the bud: that we're a venue that people can see the music for free."

Sergei Eisenstein reportedly called "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" the greatest movie ever made. That's especially high praise coming from the director who virtually invented avant-garde cinema, but it's hard to argue with Walt Disney's landmark achievement. The first feature-length animated movie, "Snow White" began its record-breaking run in theaters 75 years ago this week (on Feb. 4, 1938), and it was hailed immediately, both for its instant impact in transforming the medium and for what proved to be an enduring work of screen storytelling and vivid artistry. Before "Snow White," animation was widely dismissed as crudely drawn short films with singing and talking animals, strictly for kids. But Disney proved animation could work at feature length and yield results as artistically satisfying as live-action film. Today, "Snow White" stands as the template for virtually every animated feature made since, as well as the cornerstone of all the Disney family-entertainment empire has built over the past 75 years.

Disney Interactive has announced the launch date for Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two, and you want to mark your calenders for November 18th. The sequel to the game that took the world by storm also has a great E3 trailer you can catch below, as well as a Bts trailer that’s worth a look.
It’s something of a surprise that I’m so taken by either of these games, but the first one was addictive, and just plain loads of fun. The new one looks like it’s going to take things up a couple of notches, and that’s pretty impressive.
This time around you’ll get Oswald the Lucky Rabbit as a true partner, and you’ll explore a full world bursting with forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions.
Read the full press release below, and then take a look at the trailers.

Death Race 2
I’m not much of a fan of films that are sequels but are actually prequels, this is one of those movies. This film is overly campy and much like the first film in the series, it’s poorly written. Not much more to say about this film other then it was complete and utter trash.
Feature Commentary: with director Roel Reine The Race Begins: The Evolution of Death Race Cheating Death: The Stunts of Death Race 2 : behind-the-scenes featurette. I'll have to come clean and admit something: as a child I never watched Bambi. My head and heart were captured by outer space and Star Wars, and the cartoons I grew up watching were old Looney Tunes and Woody Woodpecker shows. Instead of crying over that most infamous of moments in Bambi (and if you don't know what I'm talking about, then I won't be the one to spoil you now), I cried over Bruce Dern blowing up the Valley Forge at the end of Silent Running.
It was only later in life, as a teenager, that I started understanding the legacy of the old school Disney animated films. By the time I caught Dumbo on television, I knew all about the scene where his mother could only caress her baby elephant through the bars of her cage -- but that didn't stop the gravity of that scene from playing out with my emotions.

I can hardly imagine what I could tell you about Bambi at this point, but the Diamond Edition Blu-Ray is available today, and there's quite a bit I can tell you about that. Disney has already won me over with their previous releases in this collection, and Bambi is no exception. The release doesn't quite jump out at you the way the others did, because a quick glance at the back cover doesn't make it seem like it's as loaded with new content, but believe me when I tell you that this is a release you need to own.
Bambi does not particularly lend itself to "flash and sizzle," and the truly massive restoration of the film (9,000+ hours of it) already happened. Sure, there's "newly enhanced digital restoration," with better picture and sound, but, it's Bambi. An impossibly clear picture of broad brush strokes and a general lack of intricate...

Blu-ray Review
Bambi
Directed by: James Algar, Sam Armstrong, David Hand, Graham Heid, Bill Roberts, Paul Satterfield, Norman Wright
Cast: Hardie Alright, Stan Alexander, Bobette Audry
Running Time: 1 hr 10 mins
Rating: G
Due Out: March 1, 2011
Plot: Bambi follows a young deer and several of his forest friends. Together his friends, Thumper and Flower, as well as his mother teach him about life in the forest.
Who’S It For? Children. Hopefully with their short attention span, the fact that Bambi has no actual plot will be lost on them. Hardcore Disney fans will be glad to see this beautiful transfer, but may be disappointed in the film since its childlike wonder has worn off.
Movie:
Bambi is one of those movies that, unfortunately, time has not been kind to. I remember watching it when I was a kid and being fascinated by the deer and his friends, but years later?...
