Stephen Schwartz, the musical maestro behind such iconic shows as “Pippin” and “Wicked,” will be the subject of a new documentary from John Scheinfeld.
Entitled “Defying Gravity: From Godspell to Wicked, A Musical Journey,” the film will commence production in 2021 and will track the highs and lows of Schwartz’s remarkable career. Scheinfeld is no stranger to music industry tales, having previously directed “Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary” and “The U.S. vs. John Lennon.”
Schwartz, as a composer and lyricist, has penned some of the most recognizable numbers in stage and film history — a list of hits that includes “Corner of the Sky,” “Colors of the Wind,” and “Day by Day.” His credits include stage shows such as “Godspell” and films such as “Pocahontas” and “Prince of Egypt.” He’s also had some failures, notably the musical bomb “The Baker’s Wife.” Schwartz is an Oscar, Tony, and Grammy winner.

Orson Welles indisputably made a huge impact on the film industry, both in terms of technical proficiency and storytelling sophistication. However, Welles was never the biggest fan of films themselves. He just saw it as a way to tell stories he wanted to. That makes sense to me of how he approached filmmaking. Had he been a movie fan, I don't know if he would have thought so much outside of the box about to make them than he did. That isn't to say he didn't like all movies. In the early 1950s, Welles managed to cobble together a list of his ten favorite films for Sound on Sight (via Open Culture). As he had only been exposed to a couple of decades of cinema, I think this is a very interesting list, and one that makes a lot of sense for someone like Welles. City Lights (dir. Today we are talking to one of Broadway's best baritones all about his accomplished career in musical theatre that began nearly 20 years ago with a memorable turn in Miss Saigon, the thoughtful and debonair Matt Bogart. In addition to looking back at his arrival on Broadway during the mega-musical era, Bogart also comments on subsequent starring roles in Broadway productions ranging from Elton John and Tim Rice's Tony Award-winning Aida to Frank Wildhorn and Jack Murphy's The Civil War and far beyond. Additionally, Bogart sheds considerable light on projects he has participated in over the years in regional productions and workshops, including The Baker's Wife, Camelot, Ace and more. Most importantly, Bogart offers the full 411 on this weekend's hotly anticipated evening of music from famous rock concept musical Chess and clues us in on what we can expect from the starry evening, directed by Scott Coulter. Emily Blunt seems to have been on the cusp of superstardom since she costarred with Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada," back in 2006. Since then, she's appeared in many interesting movies, more than a few of which have been would-be blockbusters (most recently, this summer's terrific sci-fi actioner "Edge of Tomorrow"), but she hasn't quite gotten there yet. That could all change with the Christmas Day release of "Into the Woods," a lavish, big-screen adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's beloved musical.
In the movie, Blunt plays The Baker's Wife opposite James Corden and, of course, Streep (playing the Witch), and she can really belt out the tunes. It's pretty impressive, especially given her ridiculously talented castmates, who include Chris Pine, Anna Kendrick, and Johnny Depp. We got on the phone and talked with her for a few minutes about what it was like venturing "Into the Woods,...

Ladies and gentlemen, Emily Blunt can sing. Like almost of all of her co-stars in Rob Marshall's "Into The Woods," she proves that not only does she have a lovely singing voice, but that she can pull off Sondheim as well. The film hits theaters on Christmas Day and will wrap up another whirlwind year for Blunt. She gave birth to her first daughter in February, promoted the critically acclaimed "Edge of Tomorrow" for most of May and June (her first major action role), filmed the new Denis Villeneuve drama "Sicario" alongside Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin immediately afterward and is now in the middle of a long publicly (and awards) tour for "Woods." Blunt plays the role of The Baker's Wife in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Tony Award-winning musical and, along with the Baker (played by James Corden), her character helps connect the different Grimm...

Jose here. As Nathaniel noted, the Governors Awards were held last night in Hollywood (yay Maureen O’Hara!). As usual they were pretty much a rehearsal dinner for the Oscars next year. While their red carpet is more subdued than Oscar’s - they’re there to pay tribute to legendary honorees, not to steal their thunder - there were a few exceptions to the rule. After all, if you want people to vote for you, you gotta make sure they remember you.
Let's take a look at what 16 of the Oscar hopefuls wore. What might it mean in the larger scheme of things?
Emily Blunt has worn this exact same thing to at least 10 other award ceremonies, color variations aside. Don't get me wrong, she's stunning etc. etc. etc. but will it help The Baker's Wife's Oscar cause, to look so every-year Blunt? The under-nominated actress should start...

For fans of musical theater, "Into the Woods" is something of a holy grail. The Stephen Sondheim/James Lapine production first premiered in 1986 and has been regularly staged ever since, most recently as part of the starry Shakespeare in the Park series in New York's Central Park. The play, which cleverly combines a handful of famous Brothers Grimm fairy tales into an enchanting concoction all its own, has, for all of its beloved followers and lavish productions, never been successfully adapted for the big screen... Top billed but so what?!
Meryl Streep has the first poster for Christmas release Into the Woods all to herself and the Witch is always the marquee role in Stephen Sondheim's musical on stage. But Meryl will be campaigned supporting. The news isn't technically "official" but it soon will be so we're playing a little game of switcheroo on the Lead Actress and Supporting Actress Oscar Prediction Charts.
Technically this reversal (at least from our expectations) is probably fine as categorizations go: The Witch is a showy role but it's not a huge one and The Baker's Wife (Emily Blunt) is just as much of a major focal point of the show (winning the lead actress Tony for Joanna Gleason in the first production) and the wife has the clearest arc. So Blunt is our leading contender.

London - My dad took me to see "Into the Woods" during its original run in 1988. It was my first Broadway show and Stephen Sondheim's twisted take on classic fairy tales has been amongst my favorite musicals ever since. It's full of beautiful, complicated music and I notice new lyrical nuances every time I listened to the soundtrack. So I wasn't just blowing smoke when I told Emily Blunt that I'm looking forward to Rob Marshall's big screen adaptation, which will premiere this Christmas. I was talking with Blunt at a London hotel last week about her upcoming action film "Edge of Tomorrow" -- I agree with my colleague Drew McWeeny's enthusiastic review -- and I made sure to slip in an "Into the Woods" query at the end. "I think we have been very, very loyal to the original musical," Blunt told me. She's playing The Baker's Wife,...

"Actressing on the edges" is one of our favorite things, as the Smackdowns should make clear. Since most Tfe readers are similarly affected with this obsession love, we assume you'll have plenty to say on the topic of "Best Supporting Actress" even before you've seen the performances and movies in question here.
Will The Baker's Wife (Emily Blunt) cheat on her husband with a handsome Prince (Billy Magnussen)? Anything can happen in the woods
Oscar traction for the supporting categories of either gender is always hard to see in advance primarily because the size and substance of the roles in question aren't broadly telegraphed in advance the way lead characters tend to be. (It's not even always clear with adaptations of familiar material since role compositing happens and focus can shift characters from one version of a story to another.) What's more, supporting campaigns are often dependent on love for...

The humorous and heartfelt musical, a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, explores the consequences of the quests of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, and the witch who cast a spell on them.

The first photo of Meryl Streep's portrayal of The Witch in the film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" has arrived and it's actually pretty scary. The movie, based on a Broadway play, intertwines the many Grimm fables, as The Witch interacts with famous fairy tale characters, in an effort to teach them lessons.
The cast for the movie is rather impressive, with Anna Kendrick as Cinderella, Chris Pine as Prince Charming, Emily Blunt as The Baker's Wife and even Johnny Depp as The Big Bad Wolf.
"Into the Woods," directed by Rob Marshall, is in theaters December 25.

The stars keep coming out to sing for Rob Marshall. The director, who is currently brewing up the big screen version of Stephen Sondheim's fairy tale riff "Into The Woods," already has heavyweights Johnny Depp and Meryl Streep on board, along with James Corden, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chris Pine and Emily Blunt. And now another actress who recently showed off her pipes is getting a shot. THR reports that Anna Kendrick, who recently powered "Pitch Perfect" into an unexpected hit both at the box office and in music stores with its best-selling soundtrack has joined, is taking on the role of Cinderella. The character is one of a handful of bedtime favorites -- Jack, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood -- who encounter The Baker and The Baker's Wife as they journey to find a way to lift a witch's curse that has left them unable to have children...with song!

Additionally, Finneran and I discuss her recent role in the terrific live performance film adaptation of Stephen Sondheims Company, co-starring Neil Patrick Harris and Patti LuPone, and we also take a look back at her two Tony-winning Broadway roles from earlier this decade - the lauded Jeremy Sams revival of the comedy Noises Off, as well as Rob Ashfords revival of the Burt BacharachHal DavidNeil Simon Promises, Promises. Also, Finneran describes the feeling of reaching a career peak such as she has achieved this year - a new Tony Award, the Company film and headlining a sitcom of her own - and also relates how her role as a new mom has influenced her participation on the battle-of-the-generations comedy. Broadway musical theatre writer who wrote the libretto for Fiddler on the Roof and the screenplay for the 1971 film
Joseph Stein, who has died aged 98, was the last of the great Broadway musical theatre writers coming out of New York revue and television comedy after the second world war. Most famously, he wrote the book, or libretto, for Fiddler on the Roof (1964) and Zorba (1968). "There are no limitations to the subject for a musical," Stein once said, "just as there are no limitations to the subject for a play or a novel. The only limitation that I can see is that it has to have an honesty about the relationship of people to each other."
He cast his net wide, shaping not only the Ukrainian shtetl stories of Sholom Aleichem into the tale of Tevye the milkman and his five daughters in Fiddler on the Roof, but also drawing, perhaps surprisingly,...
