When I ordered this film, I had looked up the plot on Wikipedia better, the German version through English translation. Well I thought I understood it .But when It Finally came and I saw it , it was more complicated than I thought. so I played it three times and looked at the plot on Wikipedia . I under stand it Better but not much.It was Helmaute Kautner's first feature. Because of it's non propaganda view and a positive attitude of the British, it was banned. Kautner Wanted a pleasant comedy with no message. Hannelore Scroth,who was in ten years of bad luck,was Kathee Haaks daughter and the sister of Heinrich Scroth.Miss Scroths must of been in her early twenties. Well in this breezy comedy she plays Kitty the manicurist, at the Hotel Eden ,at lake Lugano. Kautner wanted to shoot the exteriors at the real lake but Goebbels had refused him. Kitty co works with her room mate and friend Mimi , played by Charlott Daudert, who was also in Men of the Dora, at the Babershop at the Hotel run by Enrico, played by Leo Peukert.The Hotel is getting ready for a Economic world conference. Paul Horbinger, played Hubber, getting the Hotel ready for the conference,as the manager of it. All the people are showing up including the reporters,played by Hubert Von Meyerinck. Some crooks , who want to make a profit out of some deal ,through gambling,Vicomte DE Tristan Gavard, played by Max Guldorf and Irene Sorel,played by Niklisch Maria.Others,Minister of Corpadore,played by Hubert Hubner. As Kitty is taking a lunch break and waiting on Mimi,I think,she starts pacing back and forth when she notices the Dutch reporter,Piet played by Chrtistine Golong. She begins a conversation with him. He is misguided to think she is a secretary so she's force to fake. The most Improtant member of the conference shows up. The prime minister of finance, from England, Sir Horace Ashlin, played by Fritz Odmar,he has a secret that everyone want to know, especially Vic and Irene ,speculators. He does not tell any of the press, as he is being greeted by Hubber. Later on Kitty is out on the Foyee dressed up as she dressed up to go out. She wants to meet Piet and try to get him to take her out.Hubber asks her why she so dressed up. I had a second thought.I think she was interested in Piet in hope of him introducing her to Horace. I think Kitty's a gold digger.So he shows up and they start a conversation and He agrees to take her out but she stalls, still thinking she's a secretary. In the mean time Irene shows up at the foyer . She's trying to get Peit to give her info that he might have on the economical deal of Sir Horace. Well Horace shows up and Piet thinks she's his secretary. She goes up to the bar and pushes to introduce herself to him. At first he resist and ends up taking her out to dinner at a restaurant where you can hear what sound like Rudi Schruki and his trio singing a tango.Late the next day the Vic has made friends with translator for the minister of Coprafi- ,I mean!
Copradore, to find out what deal is cooking between him and Horace. The deal is that the Caprodore is having an oil agreement with Sir Ashley. Horace is wanting his nails manicured. He asks for a manicurist. Surprice it's Kitty. He's can't believe it.Realizing she was pretending on the bases of Piet. He decides to keep it up to trick the swindlers from using the oil deal for stock speculation ,cause by Victome and Irene. Piet goes out to meet Irene at a picnic, where you can hear soft jazz on her radio,Must be that radio in Switzeralnd where it was legal to play Jazz. But He shows up, kitty follows , then tells her about the deal not going thru, the lie.She quickly ,Irene, goes on a boat to tell Victome , on a sails boat with translator women. She tell him the problem. Kitty shows up at the lake to Piet . She finally let's Piet knows that she's a manicurist. They both fall in love. Later on after the conference is over,what I still don't under stand, Piet goes to kitty to tell her something that makes her mad and she tells Sir Horace about. Later Horace patches up things for Piet and Kitty. This was a Hollywood production.Worth collecting being that it was one of the few non propaganda pictures and Kautners debut as a film maker. This was a restored clear sharp digital print, Available at www.reichskino.com 10/8/11 T.c.m and Warner brother probably would call this Implied propaganda. But they are too politically correct to be honest. This is the way Wall Streets are, all of them.
