Put on the trail of an escaped bank robber (Michael Vallon), Lightning Ken Morgan (Ken Maynard) is sent out to find him, pretty much against his will, but duty is duty, and he's an honorable guy. Vallon has hidden half a million dollars worth of gold. Vallon attempts to disguise himself, and pays the doctor off with a bullet to the chest, nice guy that he is. An interesting hiding place for the map of the gold's location is an excellent detail. Others strive to get the gold, and it's not for the purpose of returning this to the government.
Probably the best western I've seen from Colony films, an independent company that made B westerns for several years in the late 30's into 1940. Maynard, their leading man, looks younger than his 45 years, and is a solid hero. Claire Rochelle is very good as the feisty owner of a saloon who must stand up to the riffraff who have wormed their way into run it. Lots of action and plenty of intrigue, fast moving and never without excitement, this one ranks at a higher rating than I would normally give films like this.
