Trouble At Mill

Warning: Spoilers
This film must have greatly appealed to J.Arthur Rank.Lawson's character rises fast in the foundry management through his ruthless drive. This leads to a man being killed as a result of his negligence and the workers,of whom he was once one, turning against him. However he is shown the error of his ways by a former colleague who has become a lay preacher and goes back to face the challenge of the second world war a reformed and redeemed man.Just the sort of film that Rank came into the industry to produce.Obviously the moral of the film, that everyone is capable of redemption is a bit simplistic to say the least.Lawson was never a restrained actor and he takes every opportunity to chew the scenery with relish. It is quite strange that up till this period in time he was very much a leading man,but after the war he slid back into the ranks of supporting actors.I don't know if his well known love of the bottle caused this downturn in his career.Anyway this film is highly watchable but to be taken with a pinch of salt. One last thought,if this film were remade today what about it being set in a city traders office!
