Betty Brodel, a singer, actress and older sister of High Sierra and Sergeant York star Joan Leslie, died Sunday in Florida, family member Cathy Palmer told The Hollywood Reporter. She was 104.
Brodel appeared with Leslie in the wartime charity films Thank Your Lucky Stars (1943) and Hollywood Canteen (1944), plus Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942), Too Young to Know (1945) and Cinderella Jones (1946).
Elizabeth Ann Brodel was born in Detroit on Feb. 5, 1920. Her father, John Brodel, was a bank teller and her mother, Agnes, a pianist and homemaker.
She and her siblings Mary (born in 1916) and Joan (born in 1925) sang and danced in a vaudeville act called The Brodel Sisters, performing in their hometown and New York City and touring from Canada to Florida.
When a talent scout signed Mary to a contract at MGM, the family headed to Burbank, and the sisters appeared in the 1936 short film Signing Off.

Molly Sims is living her best life and dazzling her fans and followers in a hot pink bikini for a day at the beach.
The 49-year-old supermodel is looking absolutely ageless as she proves age is nothing but a number while enjoying the sand and surf while makeup free and wearing a pair of black sunglasses.
Molly’s latest selfie shows the former CoverGirl model’s fit and fabulous figure as she looks at the camera, away from the water crashing in behind her.
She accessorized her stunning bikini look with several pairs of dangly gold earrings along with three thin gold chains around her neck that held a gold heart charm, a diamond and a green stone.

Gene Kelly was one of the most influential dancers of the 20th century. While the more formal Fred Astaire was known for wearing top-hat-and-tails in ballroom dances such as the foxtrot and quickstep, Kelly brought a looser, more energetic, and modern style of dance to the Hollywood musical.
As a director, choreographer, and performer, Kelly exploited film for what it could bring to dance that the stage couldn't. Kelly used innovative techniques that can be seen in the split-screen dance in "It's Always Fair Weather," the dance with his reflection in "Cover Girl," and in the incorporation of animation in "Anchors Aweigh." He would also use the camera as...

New Kids on the Block released a video for their new song “Bring Back the Time” last week that’s perhaps the most potent expression of nostalgia we’ve ever seen. It’s the past in its purest, most uncut form, like it was created in Walter White’s secret basement laboratory and injected directly into the veins of their fans.
The video, which doubles as a commercial for the group’s upcoming Mixtape Tour, features Rick Astley, Salt-n-Pepa, and En Vogue (who are all on the tour) re-creating classic...

Olympic gold medalist gymnast Gabby Douglas is the first-ever winner of “The Masked Dancer,” having scored the show’s diamond mask trophy after being revealed as Cotton Candy.
Douglas was victorious despite facing off with two trained dancers in the finale. Runner-up Sloth turned out to be “Dancing with the Stars’” Maksim Chmerkovskiy. And in third place was Tulip, who was revealed to be Mackenzie Ziegler (“Dance Moms”).
Douglas was unmasked after dancing to “This Is Me,” by Kesha. The panelists were torn between whether the Cotton Candy was a gymnast or an ice skater. Paula Abdul figured out it was Gabby Douglas, while Ashley Tisdale named her teammate Simone Biles. Brian Austin Green thought it was Tara Lapinski, Ken Jeong named Michelle Kwan.

Be very glad that Stanley Donen, who died on today at age 94, decided not to his work at his family’s dress shop after seeing the 1933 musical “Flying Down to Rio” with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers as a boy, one that he would watch at least 30 or 40 times.
Without that influence he might not have taken dance lessons. And, if he hadn’t learned how to dance, he wouldn’t have moved to New York City to be part of the chorus in the 1940 Broadway musical in “Pal Joey,” starring Gene Kelly. Kelly asked him to be his assistant choreographer in his next Great White Way production, “Best Foot Forward.” He would be fired from the show. Donen would renew his friendship with Kelly when they both headed to Hollywood and they would collaborate on “Cover Girl” and “An American in Paris.”

“Our love will last till the stars turn cold.” That line from “Singin’ in the Rain” perfectly sums up the sensibility of its director, Stanley Donen: absolute sincerity wedded to knowing irony. When Gene Kelly’s Don Lockwood says that to Debbie Reynolds’ Kathy Seldon, he’s actually quoting a line from the cornball movie he’s just made with Jean Hagen for which he has contempt: “The Duelling Cavalier.” But what Lockwood comes to recognize is that, polished just right, hokum can be made to sparkle — and can convey genuine feeling. Is “Our love will last till the stars turn cold” silly? Sure. But it’s beautiful too, and who wants to be so cynical as not to recognize that?
Donen, who died February 23 at age 94 after a nearly 70-year career across film and theater, recognized what so few do today: that two seemingly contradictory things can be true at the same time.

Stanley Donen, the deft director of such iconic movie musicals as Singin’ In the Rain, Funny Face, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Charade who helped define Hollywood’s golden age, has died at age 94. The news was confirmed this morning by his son to the Chicago Tribune.
Donen remarkably never won an Oscar for his work, but was given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Motion Picture Academy in 1998, “in appreciation of a body of work marked by grace, elegance, wit and visual innovation.” He sang “Cheek to Cheek” with his statuette during his acceptance speech.
Born in Columbia, Sc, Donan was a Broadway dancer and choreographer when he met Gene Kelly while dancing in the chorus of Pal Joey. He eventually moved to Hollywood to dance in MGM musicals, and when he was 19 Kelly got the studio to lend Donen to Columbia Pictures so they could co-choreograph Cover Girl.

Long before Jennifer Lopez and Eva Longoria, there was Rita Hayworth. The dancer-actress, born Margarita Carmen Cansino, would have been 100 on Wednesday, and even fans of classic Hollywood may not realize how extraordinary her career was. She was the No. 1 box office star of Columbia Pictures in the 1940s, she was Fred Astaire’s favorite dancing partner, and U.S. G.I.s had pinups of her around the globe during WWII. These are especially impressive in an era when Latino-Hispanic children were still in segregated schools and only a decade after America’s “repatriation” program shipped 2 million Mexicans across the border, claiming they were “stealing” American jobs.
Work dried up for Hayworth in the 1960s, due to occasional slurred speech and memory problems. Hollywood assumed she was alcoholic, but in 1980 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, bringing worldwide awareness to the little-known disease. Her greatest legacy may be the annual Rita Hayworth Galas,...

All hail legendary song-and-dance man Gene Kelly on the 106th anniversary of his birth on August 23. In the history of American film, there were unarguably two great male dancers — Fred Astaire and Kelly. Astaire’s style was romantic and sophisticated, with long lines and elegant movement. Kelly’s style was more athletic — a guy’s guy, if you will — with a scrappy style that set him apart from other dancers of his era.
Kelly appeared to be able to do it all. He could dance, sing, and act in his films, ultimately choreographing and directing them as well. In the course of his nearly four decades on film, he starred in such classics as “An American in Paris” and “Anchors Aweigh,” as well as starring and co-directing the great musicals “On the Town” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”

How did a film like Cover Girl slip away? When it was shown at the TCM Classic Film Festival in 2012, it was considered something of a discovery, with Robert Osborne frequently singling it out in pre-festival interviews and publicity as a must-see, which makes me feel a little better about having not heard of it at all before seeing it a few months prior at the New Beverly. But the film was immensely popular in its day. Its success instantly pulled Gene Kelly out of limbo at MGM, where he’d been assigned to a series of B-movies and rarely allowed to dance his own choreography, when he was even allowed to dance at all.
Columbia Pictures was not interested in placing such limitations on him. The film’s producer, composer Arthur Schwartz, must have known how lucky they were, because they gave Kelly immense control over its production, especially his dance numbers.

“There were a lot of people saying we were trying to make a really expensive museum piece,” La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz said of the long search to find funding for writer/director Damien Chazelle’s dream musical. Those people weren’t necessarily wrong. There is a shot from this film that literally, blatantly quotes from Rebel Without a Cause. The worship for old Hollywood, old music, old rhythms of life permeates every inch of the film. But it doesn’t matter whether or not La La Land is caught up in nostalgia. It matters whether Chazelle convinces his audience of the value of those objects of worship, and the drawbacks inherent to valuing them too much.
This makes La La Land sound a little thesis-y I suppose, which is not exactly incorrect. And there’s where Chazelle’s true artistic ancestry lies – not in Hollywood’s golden era,...

Terence Davies’ films deal with repressed desire, longing, and emotional pain that springs from the depths of his characters’ souls, and yet, in person, the great British auteur is undoubtedly the funniest person in the room. He is all smiles and jokes as we sit down to discuss his glorious Sunset Song, entering a limited release this week, and a retrospective of his work at the Museum of the Moving Image. It makes sense that he is joyful rather than somber, because it makes one feel a sort of relief knowing that levity was welcomed between takes on haunting dramas such as Distant Voices, Still Lives and The Deep Blue Sea. In Sunset Song, Davies takes on the first part of a trilogy written by Lewis Grassic Gibbons, in which we meet farm girl Chris Guthrie (a luminous Agyness Deyn) as she is forced to take on the reins of her life in pre-wwi Scotland.

If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Jimmy Kimmel had the honor, once again, of revealing People's new Sexiest Man Alive. But first, Jimmy had the audience guess who it might be, hiding the man's face and disguising his voice. The audience first learned that he was taping his spot from London, he has an "accent," he has never been Sexiest Man Alive before, he's married to a celebrity, he's not an actor, he has kids, he has tattoos, and -- the clincher -- he used to be an athlete. After a guess of Nick Carter (?), someone finally asked if it's David Beckham. And it was! David, 40, thanked his parents, his hairdresser, his stylist, and Photoshop for the honor.
