Unlike most of his work, this documentary about religious sculpture from Holland has Bert Haanstra keen to educate, rather than show off his great style and eye for imagery. It's academic without being pedantic.
Opening goes to great pains to contrast our modern industrial age, depicting shots of shipbuilding and other processes, with a different world of several hundred years ago. Visiting various churches and cathedrals we see Gothic statuary and some architecture, as well as 17th Century Dutch paintings, that exalted religious subjects.
