Exclusive: Academy Award winner Estelle Parsons (Bonnie and Clyde) has signed on to star alongside Samantha Soule and Wendy vanden Heuvel in I Look To You, an upcoming indie feature written and directed by Daniel Talbott (Midday Black Midnight Blue).
The drama centers on New York transplant Chloe (Soule), who after the sudden death of her wife, ends up in an inpatient treatment program for extreme grief and depression. Once released, the only place she has left to go is the home of her estranged mother (Vanden Heuvel) in coastal Washington. Structured on the five stages of grief, the film chronicles the tenuous journey of a deeply broken mother-and-daughter relationship and faces down the question, “Can you ever really go home?” Parsons will play Elizabeth, the grandmother of Soule’s Chloe.

The first round of titles for the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival has been announced, and included among this year’s world premieres is Sebastián Lelio’s “Disobedience,” starring Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz. The movie is one of two Lelio dramas heading to Tiff this year; the other is “A Fantastic Woman,” which earned acclaim at Berlin and won Lelio the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay.
Tiff Reveals First Slate of 2017 Titles, Including ‘The Shape of Water,’ ‘Downsizing,’ and ‘Call Me By Your Name’
“Disobedience” is based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Naomi Alderman. The story follows a rabbi’s daughter (Weisz) who returns to her Orthodox Jewish community in Hendon, London following the death of her estranged father. While there, she rekindles a romance with a former friend (McAdams), who just so happens to be married to her cousin. Alessandro Nivola also stars.

So let's stop to catch our breath before steaming ahead into the dog days of summer. Herewith key posts in case you're behind on your favorite blog. That's this one, right? (Rhetorical question)

Thanks to Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca and the underrated Jamaica Inn, Daphne du Maurier is a well known writer among movie buffs. But of course her work is known outside of Hitchcock's circles thanks to Nicolas Roeg's classic Don't Look Now and with the recent release My Cousin Rachel. Daphne du Maurier‘s original novel My Cousin Rachel apparently does not specify the exact period in which it’s set, but implies some time toward the end of the 19th century on the Cornish coast. This new version of the story starring Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin actually positions itself in a specific time frame, as decided upon by director Roger Michell and costume designer Dinah Collin, namely the year 1840.
We have an exclusive featurette about the costume design of My Cousin Rachel, which although brief goes into some detail about what to expect from the finished film:
What is most fascinating is just why 1840 was chosen. It was very much a transitional era, essentially the second Industrial Revolution, so the mass expansion of railways, steam and gas. It was a working time and clothes began to reflect this, although skirts would eventually become much fuller about a decade...

My Cousin Rachel, which hits theaters June 9th, has released some new images, and while they don’t exactly reveal anything integral to this adaptation, they certainly show off the charm and mood of the period piece.
The film stars Rachel Weisz as the titular character, which, if nothing else, alleviates concerns about not responding during production, with Sam Claflin as Philip and Iain Glen (one presumes) as Ambrose.
It’s unclear at this point where the adaptation is heading precisely, and whether director/writer Roger Michell is aiming to deliver something true to the du Maurier novel, or the Richard Burton/Olivia de Havilland film. The two have their differences, an idea noted even by du Maurier. It’s a question worth pondering, mainly because the tone and ending of neither fit very well within the confines of today’s “Hollywood ideals.” That’s perhaps a curious point to ponder in an adaptation,...

The Rachel Weiszenaissance looks to be continuing at full speed after last year's indie hit The Lobster and her good notices for the otherwise middling Light Between the Oceans. We now have the trailer for her latest project, a Victorian era thriller based on a novel by the Og spookmaster Daphne du Maurier called My Cousin Rachel.
There have already been a few film adaptations over the years, but none that star Rachel Weisz, so I'm very excited to see what this latest has to offer.

While the title may have you believe a self-reflexive documentary about Rachel Weisz is coming from her not-too-distant family member, My Cousin Rachel is rather a period drama with a bit of a twist. An adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier‘s classic novel, the story is centered on an Englishman (Sam Claflin) who is caught in a bit of a pickle: he plots revenge against his cousin, Rachel (Weisz), under suspicion of murder, all the while falling for her irresistible charms.
Ahead of a release by Fox Searchlight this summer, a new trailer for the Roger Michell-directed feature has now landed. Rather than a staid period drama, Weisz looks to command this one with some serious bite. See the trailer below, along with the poster, for the film also starring Holliday Grainger, Iain Glen, and Pierfrancesco Favino.

Daphne du Maurier’s 1951 novel My Cousin Rachel is a mystery-filled romance, with upper-class British people wondering just how trustworthy other upper-class British people are when one of their own becomes hopelessly infatuated with his cousin, a woman who may or may not have murdered her previous beau. This trailer for Roger Michell’s adaptation of the book leans harder on the romance angle than anything else, but the cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” and all of the yelling going on make it pretty clear that there’s some heavy stuff going on behind the sweeping vistas and outdoor sex. The film stars Rachel Weisz as the eponymous Rachel, as well as Sam Claflin, Holliday Grainger, and Iain Glen.

Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin court disgrace (and each other) in the first trailer for Roger Michell’s “My Cousin Rachel,” an adaptation of the 1951 novel by Daphne du Maurier, most famous for penning “Rebecca” and “The Birds.” A lesser known work, the last time “My Cousin Rachel” made it to the big screen was in 1952, starring Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton.
The novel centers around a young man named Philip (Claflin) as he plots against his mysterious and beautiful cousin, Rachel Ashley (Weisz), whom he suspects of poisoning his guardian. Philip falls under the beautiful Rachel’s spell, losing his resolve as his infatuation grows — and maybe even endangering his own life in the process.

We have a first trailer for the dark romance My Cousin Rachel, an adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier‘s classic novel. The story is centered on an Englishman (Sam Claflin) who is caught in a bit of a pickle: he plots revenge against his cousin, Rachel (Rachel Weisz), under suspicion of murder, all the while falling for her irresistible charms. Helmed by Roger Michell, who also penned the adaptation, My Cousin Rachel could be a striking, vivid portrait of lust and revenge.
Featuring a dream-like and (more) somber rendition of “Wicked Game,” the trailer plays to the strengths of its mise-en-scène and the cinematography by Mike Eley; Candlelight, rain, and period garb are on full display.
See the trailer below, along with a synopsis, for the film that also stars Game of Thrones’ Iain Glen and Holliday Grainger:

Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin indulge in a forbidden romance in the stirring first trailer for Roger Michell’s period drama, My Cousin Rachel.
Set against a suitably shrill cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” the snippet above introduces us to Claflin’s dashing Englishman Philip, who seeks out his distant cousin Rachel to enact revenge. Those feelings of contempt and loathing soon dissolve before his very eyes when he comes into contact with Rachel Weisz’s titular, alluring lead, sparking a forbidden romance that ruffles feathers all across the West County. Lifting inspiration from Daphne du Maurier’s novel of the same name, there’s a touch of Jane Austin to be found in My Cousin Rachel. Couple this with the gothic aesthetic and Michell may well have a sleeper hit on his hands.
Here’s the official logline:

With Denial in cinemas this week starring the fabulous Rachel Weisz as Professor Deborah E. Lipstadt it comes as no surprise that Fox Searchlight have released the first UK poster & trailer for My Cousin Rachel starring Weisz and her co-star Sam Claflin (The Hunger Games). For anyone unsure, this is most definitely not a sequel to the 1992 movie My Cousin Vinny starring Joe Pesci, Ralph Macchio and Marisa Tomei… as nice as that would be!
The movie is an adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s (author of Rebecca, The Birds) acclaimed novel of the same name and is helmed by Notting Hill / Morning Glory director Roger Michell.

First announced nearly a year-and-a-half ago, we kinda plain forgot about “My Cousin Rachel.” And given that the movie is being released without much fanfare (no festival bow at least), we’re a bit cautious. But frankly, a sweeping period picture starring Rachel Weisz and based on the novel by Daphne du Maurier is sort of my jam, so there will be at least one ticket sold no matter what.

Now that principal photography has been slated to get underway next week – April 4, to be exact – Fox Searchlight is beefing up its cast for upcoming adaptation, My Cousin Rachel.
With Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin and Holliday Grainger already on board, Variety is reporting that Game of Thrones stalwart Iain Glen and stage actor Simon Russell Beale have agreed to star in the feature film, itself based on the epynomous novel penned by Daphne du Maurier.
The movie is being adapted for the silver screen by director Roger Michell (Notting Hill, Enduring Love), who expressed his own excitement about steering du Maurier’s “detailed, dark, sexy and cinematic” story into theaters. For Michell, “so many really great films have grown out of the works of Daphne Du Maurier: ‘Don’t Look Now,’ ‘The Birds,’ ‘Rebecca’… .and here’s another of her classics which is at once detailed, dark, sexy, cinematic and full of surprises.

British actress Holliday Grainger is on the verge of joining Roger Michell’s adaptation, My Cousin Rachel.
Deadline has the scoop, revealing that Grainger (Cinderella, The Finest Hours) is circling a key role opposite Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin, after the pair boarded the project back in September. Adapted for the screen by Michell himself, My Cousin Rachel has been pitched as a slight reworking of Daphne du Maurier’s classic thriller novel.
Philip remains at the core of the dark romance, who spends his days content by sharing a roof with his cousin and guardian, Ambrose. Things take a turn for the sinister though when Rachel (Weisz) becomes the key suspect when Ambrose is found murdered, though Philip’s original plan for revenge soon begins to melt away under the seductive spell of the title character.
Fox Searchlight is producing the family thriller, placing Claflin in the shoes of the conflicted Philip.

It has been sixty three years since Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland starred in Henry Koster’s cinematic adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s 1951 novel, My Cousin Rachel. The classic noir mystery is now set for modernisation, however, with Sam Claflin and Academy Award winner Rachel Weisz taking the redefined lead roles, under the oversight of writer-director Roger Michell (Morning Glory, Hyde Park On The Hudson).
The story follows a young man’s descent into paranoia and confusion as he is stricken with grief at the loss of a beloved relative. When the widow, Rachel, arrives, he is torn between his growing love for her, and the belief that she could be a gold-digging femme fatale.

Rachel Weisz and Sam Claflin are set to star in a remake of My Cousin Rachel.
The reworking of the 1952 film starring Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland is based on Daphne Du Maurier's classic novel.
Roger Mitchell will write and direct the new adaptation, which follows Phillip Ashley as he seeks revenge on the woman he thinks killed his cousin and caretaker (via Variety).
The synopsis reads: "Philip Ashley's older cousin Ambrose, who raised the orphaned Philip as his own son, has died in Rome. Philip, the heir to Ambrose's beautiful English estate, is crushed that the man he loved died far from home. He is also suspicious.
"While in Italy, Ambrose fell in love with Rachel, a beautiful English and Italian woman. But the final, brief letters Ambrose wrote hint that his love had turned to paranoia and fear.
"Now Rachel has arrived at Philip's newly inherited estate.

It's a big year for Rachel Weisz. The Oscar-winning actress appears in Paolo Sorrentino's "Youth" and Yorgos Lanthimos' "The Lobster" just in time for awards season, and has been tapped to star in Fox Searchlight's forthcoming "My Cousin Rachel" remake, based on the book of the same name. The 1952 original, which starred Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton, will get a modern day makeover with writer/director Roger Michell at the helm. Weisz will also star alongside Tom Wilkinson in a new vehicle from writer David Ayer, "Denial," due next year. In other casting news, Meryl Streep's daughter Grace Gummer will be joining Amazon's upcoming pilot season, portraying the late trailblazing director, Nora Ephron, of whom her mother was a great admirer and frequent collaborator. The series follows a group of Newsweek reporters who sued the magazine in 1970 for sexual harassment and discrimination, in which Ephron led the charge.

Back in 1952, 20th Century Fox released My Cousin Rachel, a noir mystery starring Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland. Now Fox Searchlight is putting a remake together, with Roger Michell on board to direct and Rachel Weisz in early talks to star. The original film, which Michell will also adapt, takes its story from Daphne du Maurier’s novel about Philip, an orphan who is used to living a happy life with his cousin and guardian, Ambrose. But when Ambrose is off on one of his health-related holidays, he reports back that he has fallen for Rachel, a distant relation, the tone of his letters starts to change and Philip decides to go and investigate. Yet he underestimates the power the beautiful Rachel will have over him. According to Variety, the plan is for Weisz to work on the film after she finishes Denial, which has Tom Wilkinson in place to co-star.

Olivia de Havilland picture U.S. labor history-making 'Gone with the Wind' star and two-time Best Actress winner Olivia de Havilland turns 99 (This Olivia de Havilland article is currently being revised and expanded.) Two-time Best Actress Academy Award winner Olivia de Havilland, the only surviving major Gone with the Wind cast member and oldest surviving Oscar winner, is turning 99 years old today, July 1.[1] Also known for her widely publicized feud with sister Joan Fontaine and for her eight movies with Errol Flynn, de Havilland should be remembered as well for having made Hollywood labor history. This particular history has nothing to do with de Havilland's films, her two Oscars, Gone with the Wind, Joan Fontaine, or Errol Flynn. Instead, history was made as a result of a legal fight: after winning a lawsuit against Warner Bros. in the mid-'40s, Olivia de Havilland put an end to treacherous...

Roger Michell (Notting Hill) is attached to write and direct My Cousin Rachel, an adaptation of the classic Daphne Du Maurier novel, for Fox Searchlight.
The dark romance revolves around Philip, a young orphan, who believes his mysterious, beautiful cousin Rachel may have been responsible for the murder of his beloved guardian Ambrose, also a cousin of theirs. As Philip plots his revenge, he finds his feelings complicated as he falls under Rachel’s beguiling spell.
The project is currently out to cast.
The book, originally published in 1951, was previously adapted into a film starring screen legends Olivia de Havilland and Richard Burton and directed by Henry Koster (Harvey).
Michell most recently directed TV mini-series The Lost Honour of Christopher Jeffries, the true story of a retired schoolteacher who was wrongly accused of the murder of 25-year-old landscape architect Jo Yeates and vilified in the press, before being fully vindicated.

I normally publish this list on Luise Rainer's birthday but having lost her just as 2014 ended after a year already marked by the loss of several screen giants including Mickey Rooney, Peter O'Toole and Joan Fontaine, we needed some positivity to kick off the new calendar!
Olivia de Havilland, two time best actress. She's still defiantly with us!
This semi-annual list of living Oscar-vets was never intended to be a morbid countdown list as a stray commenter or three has complained. Not at all! It's a way for us to honor people while they're still conscious of our appreciation for their indelible contributions to our favorite artform. Your assignment: pick six players here and during the year, rent a key film from each so that they can receive your telepathic waves of appreciation in 2015! (That's only 1 film every other month. You can do it!)
So our very best wishes...

With the back-to-back departures of Peter O'Toole and Joan Fontaine I've been really bummed about losing great artists from Hollywood's Golden Age. The Golden Age is roughly considered to be from Hollywood's 1930s through the 1950s. I still hadn't recovered from the loss of Eleanor Parker, an underappreciated actress I had honestly planned a retrospective of but never got around to.
This morning in my movie grief I inadvertently killed dozens of people off on twitter by claiming there were only six stars of the Golden Age still living. So consider this list my penance. In the past I've published a semi-annual list of all living Oscar-vets in any capacity. It ws never meant to be a morbid countdown list but a way for us to honor people while they're still theoretically conscious of our appreciation for their indelible contributions. So though I normally publish such a list on Ms.

Grant Bowler / Richard Burton: Liz & Dick Grant Bowler as Richard Burton in Lifetime’s fall movie Liz & Dick looks less convincing than Lindsay Lohan as Elizabeth Taylor. Burton met Taylor at the time the two were making Cleopatra for 20th Century Fox. A troubled production, Cleopatra was initially to have starred Taylor, Peter Finch, and Stephen Boyd, under the direction of Rouben Mamoulian. Mamoulian left, Taylor fell seriously ill, nearly died, and had to have a tracheotomy performed. The end result was a Best Actress Academy Award for her troubles (and for Butterfield 8) and brand new leading men for Cleopatra: Richard Burton as Marc Antony and Rex Harrison as Julius Caesar. By then, Cleopatra also had a new director: two-time Best Director Oscar winner Joseph L. Mankiewicz. A respected stage and screen actor in the ’60s, Richard Burton was nominated for seven Academy Awards. Best Supporting Actor...

Olivia de Havilland, The Heiress Olivia de Havilland vs. Warner Bros. Pt.2 "From the age of 18 when I began my career as Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream," Olivia de Havilland would tell entertainment journalist Robert Osborne, "I always wanted to play difficult roles in films with significant themes. With the exception of that first Shakespearean film, no equivalent opportunities were given me at Warner Bros." (Actually, In This Our Life, for one, does have "significant themes." It also features black characters, not caricatures, something uncommon at that time.) De Havilland added that "absolutely no one in the industry thought I would win the case. When I at last succeeded, lots of flowers and telegrams began to arrive, which, of course, made me very happy." [Olivia de Havilland at 2008 Bette Davis tribute.] Following de Havilland’s legal victory, Warner Bros. made sure its remaining contract player Ida Lupino received top billing when the Curtis Bernhardt-directed 1943 drama Devotion,...

Did any of you catch that AMPAS has opened up a Production Design Database? It's just got two sample searches right now "Science Fiction" and "Wedding Clothes" and many of the items you still have to make appointments to actually see but what they do have up gives you a taste of their rich history. (It's better to search more generally -- like say by picking a year -- than to search for a specific film). Since I didn't do as much as I intended for the June Wedding theme here at the blog, I thought I'd share a couple of their illustrations for one last walk down an aisle (and to give you a taste of the type of stuff they have.)
The wedding search is more Costume Design than Production Design but those two departments are usually tight. In the picture above you see illustrations of stars Elizabeth Taylor...
