It was a very good year for Martin Scorsese when the iconic filmmaker earned 10 Oscar nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon, but the 81-year-old auteur isn’t slowing down. In addition to partnering with Steven Spielberg to adapt Cape Fear for TV and adapting Life of Jesus based on Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel, Scorsese is eyeing a Frank Sinatra biopic with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence reportedly leading the cast.
While a Frank Sinatra biopic based on the life and times of the world-famous crooner sounds like a dream project come true, Scorsese might encounter a sour note on behalf of the late entertainer’s daughter, Tina Sinatra, who controls her father’s estate. Tina is withholding her blessing for Scorsese to move forward with the project, but that hasn’t stopped him from lining up a cast of A-list actors to make it a reality. Naturally, DiCaprio would play Sinatra,...

Catering directly to my interests, the Criterion Channel’s January lineup boasts two of my favorite things: James Gray and cats. In the former case it’s his first five features (itself a terrible reminder he only released five movies in 20 years); the latter shows felines the respect they deserve, from Kuroneko to The Long Goodbye, Tourneur’s Cat People and Mick Garris’ Sleepwalkers. Meanwhile, Ava Gardner, Bertrand Tavernier, Isabel Sandoval, Ken Russell, Juleen Compton, George Harrison’s HandMade Films, and the Sundance Film Festival get retrospectives.
Restorations of Soviet sci-fi trip Ikarie Xb 1, The Unknown, and The Music of Regret stream, as does the recent Plan 75. January’s Criterion Editions are Inside Llewyn Davis, Farewell Amor, The Incredible Shrinking Man, and (most intriguingly) the long-out-of-print The Man Who Fell to Earth, Blu-rays of which go for hundreds of dollars.

Judy Balaban, the daughter of a longtime studio mogul who dated Montgomery Clift and Merv Griffin, married Tony Franciosa and served as one of Grace Kelly’s bridesmaids at her wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco, has died. She was 91.
Balaban died Thursday night in a hospital in Los Angeles, her friend, author and documentary filmmaker Cari Beauchamp, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Balaban was a champion for civil rights, serving on the board of directors for the ACLU of Southern California for decades.
In a 2010 piece for Vanity Fair that she and Beauchamp co-wrote, Balaban described using LSD (then legal) as a form of therapy in the early 1960s when her good friends Cary Grant and his third wife, Betsy Drake, were using it, too.
“What I had with Cary and Betsy was a kind of soul-baringness that the culture didn’t start to deal with until years later,” she says in the story.

f it was the summer of the megawatt blockbusters “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” September has turned into a month of sequelitis with “The Nun 2,” “Equalizer 3” and “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3.” Even Kenneth Branagh’s “A Hunting in Venice,” is the third installment in the actor/director’s Hercule Poirot mystery series. It’s all a bit of a snooze. That wasn’t the case 70 years ago this month.
There were some oddball films that were released September, 1953 including “Cat-Women of the Moon” with Sonny Tufts and Marie Windsor and “The Sins of Jezebel” starring Paulette Goddard. But 70 years ago, audiences were introduced to a new wide-screen format and young actress who would become one of the biggest stars of the 1950s and ‘60s and Clark Gable returning to a role he originated in 1932.

The first time Cecil B. DeMille parted the waters of the Red Sea, to film the 1923 version of The Ten Commandments, he did it at Seal Beach, CA, just 30 miles down the Pacific coast from Santa Monica. Three decades later, when Paramount Pictures decided to remake the Old Testament tale in Technicolor and VistaVision, the same director returned to do it again, only this time on location on the Sinai Peninsula with thousands of extras provided by the Egyptian army — no matter that the country’s military was rather busy with urgent geopolitical matters at the time. Both versions were massive hits, with the remake serving as the capper to DeMille’s illustrious career.

An Oscar-nominated actor; a documentarian-turned-butcher; a diaspora hip-hop drama. What reads as a disparate set of elements is alchemy in practice with “Mogul Mowgli,” Bassam Tariq’s fiery debut. The protagonist is a London-born Pakistani rapper (Riz Ahmed): As Zed to his fans, Zaheer to his friends, and Zuzu to his mum, his identity is split between east and west and not fixed in either.
Ahmed and Tariq dive into that schism of the self in a sometimes surreal movie that also has Ahmed tap into his real-life rap and spoken-word battle skills as a musician. Elegant movie star Grace Kelly was not just a stunning beauty but a gifted performer, so some might be surprised to learn that her film career lasted just five years. During those years, the regal blonde won an Oscar and worked with Alfred Hitchcock three times, in “Dial M for Murder,” “To Catch a Thief” and “Rear Window” — perhaps her signature role.
Hollywood’s big question when she married Prince Albert Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was whether she would continue to act. This awards season funny lady Melissa McCarthy, who earned a supporting actress Oscar nomination for the raunchy 2011 hit “Bridesmaids,” has been receiving stellar reviews for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” as a prickly and lonely celebrity biographer. McCarthy is on the fast track for Oscar-consideration this year.
Also, a shoo-in for multiple award nomination is Lady Gaga, who traded in her meat dress and platinum blonde tresses for jeans and dark hair to play a struggling singer/songwriter in the acclaimed remake of “A Star is Born.”
Even when the Oscar was in its infancy, performers found altering an image caught the attention of the Academy voters.

The song opens with Ahmed spitting a frenetic verse over relentless hand drums. “They put their boots in our ground/ In put my roots in their ground/ And I put my truth in this sound/ I spit my truth, and it’s brown,” he raps. “I don’t give a fuck about the cash you stack...

Grace Kelly is an actress that I haven’t spent nearly enough time with. Thankfully, that will soon change thanks to Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Here is a portion of the news release …

‘Grace of Monaco’ U.S. March release canceled as biopic starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly to open 2014 Cannes Film Festival (photo: Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly in ‘Grace of Monaco’) Directed by Olivier Dahan, and starring Nicole Kidman as Oscar-winning Hollywood actress-turned-European princess Grace Kelly, Grace of Monaco was to have been a (possibly) strong Oscar 2014 contender — at least in the Best Actress category. After all, Dahan had guided 2007 Best Actress Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard as Edith Piaf in La Vie en Rose; Nicole Kidman is a respected actress with one Academy Award win (for Stephen Daldry’s The Hours) and two nominations (Moulin Rouge!, Rabbit Hole); and, last but certainly not least, Grace of Monaco was to have been released in North America by the Oscar-savvy The Weinstein Company. However, Harvey Weinstein was reportedly unhappy with Olivier Dahan’s final cut, and demanded that Grace of Monaco be reedited.

It has been a while since I dropped into a random year’s field of Supporting Actress nominees. Still, as I have re/screened the relevant films in preparation for Saturday afternoon's Supporting Actress Smackdown, it’s startling how familiar the 1952 roster feels. Remember that “Best Supporting Actress” was only in its 15th year or so (having been introduced in 1936, almost ten years after the Oscar game got started) but, already by 1952, the category seemed to have established some of its most enduring quirks.
1952’s nominated roles are definitely cut from Oscar’s favorite cloth: the hooker with a heart; the hale helpmeet; the full force of youth; the long (briefly) suffering wife; and the shrewish “ex.”
Oscar loves a type - you see these types still!

Women in Film: Marilyn Monroe, Ava Gardner, and dozens of movie actresses in curious morphing montage A few dozen top international female movie stars, most of them Hollywood celebrities, are seen in the Women in Film morphing montage below created by Philip Scott Johnson. The faces belong to actresses from the 1910s to the early 21st century. (Image: The ‘Daughter’ of Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner — who sort of looks like a cross between Eleanor Parker and Cyd Charisse as well — in the Women in Film morphing montage.) Just as interesting as trying to identify each of the famous faces is stopping the video while the morphing is going on, so you get Daughter of Marilyn Monroe and Ava Gardner, or Daughter of Audrey Hepburn and Dorothy Dandridge, or Daughter of Michelle Pfeiffer and Sigourney Weaver. Some of those Daughters are quite pretty; others look like they’ve just landed on this planet.

Kidman as Kelly: A sure thing for the 86th Academy Awards Best Actress roster? Could Nicole Kidman earn a Best Actress Academy Award nomination early next year for playing 1954 Oscar winner Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco? Is it to soon to start with Oscar 2014 predictions? Hardly. After all, bear in mind that The Weinstein Company has already bought the North American rights to the Olivier Dahan-directed Grace of Monaco, which, according to reports, will possibly be released some time around Christmas 2013. Also, let's not forget that Kidman has already received no less than three Academy Award nods in the last decade, winning the golden statuette a decade ago for Stephen Daldry's three-part drama The Hours. (Pictured above: Grace of Monaco's star Nicole Kidman as Hollywood star turned princess Grace Kelly. Please scroll down to check out another cool Kidman as Kelly photo below.) Oh, but wait a...

I had a ball with a 10 Greatest Best Actress Victories list, and now it's time to reveal my dark side: Here are my five least favorite wins for Best Actress, and you'll notice they're all pretty fabulous actresses doing subpar work in subpar fare. Maybe I'm just mad at them for getting rewarded for the wrong work. Maybe I'm contrarian. T'any rate, here are the five offenders:
5. Jodie Foster, The Accused
This is not my way of damning Jodie for that cryptic, near-Dada speech she gave at the Golden Globes. This is my way of acknowledging that The Accused is unimportant Oscar bait full of teary monologues that just don't work. Jodie Foster is a commanding actress, and I consider her work in The Silence of the Lambs one of the most justified wins of the '90s. (Love the '91 Oscars so, so much. Thelma, Louise, Rambling Rose, Mercedes Ruehl,...

1. Burl Ives, "Silver Bells"
Here's the problem with Burl Ives' Christmas tunes: I just want him to interrupt every recording by announcing, "I am an Oscar Winner, kids. I'm not just your f*cking grandpa with the pointy beard. I beat Lee J. Cobb and Gig Young. Suck on that sugar cube, Blitzen." Indeed, Rudolph's narrator scored a Supporting Actor trophy for 1958's The Big Country, and he wasn't the jolliest bastard you've ever seen in it. But here's the thing: Christmas is about bubbling-under rage, which I've decided that Burl has, and therefore "Silver Bells" is a definitive yuletide anthem. Score: 8
2. The Carpenters, "Merry Christmas Darling"
All right. It doesn't take a looped screening of the Carpenters' Christmas specials featuring the McNichols, John Denver, and Yuletide Anorexia to realize that Christmas meant everything to the Carpenters. Karen and Richard were nothing without their plasticine grins, that true indicator of the holiday spirit.

The news that Francis Ford Coppola was moving back to the Paramount lot was exciting enough, but now it sounds like the director has some big plans in store:
"I have a secret investor that has infinite money. I learned what I learned from my three smaller films, and wanted to write a bigger film. I’ve been writing it. It’s so ambitious so I decided to go to L.A. and make a film out of a studio that has all the costume rentals, and where all the actors are. My story is set in New York. I have a first draft. I’m really ready for a casting phase. Movies are big in proportion to the period. It starts in the middle of the ‘20s, and there are sections in the ‘30s and the late ‘40s, and it goes until the late ‘60s."

Grace Kelly's film career spanned just five years and 14 movies, yet her legacy is indelible. Thirty years after her death (on Sept. 14, 1982) and 56 years after she made her last movie, the actress-turned-princess remains a trendsetter for her beauty, style and poise, and her on-screen performances continue to mesmerize with their unique blend of ice and fire. The details of Kelly's biography remain familiar, as they dovetail so neatly with many of the roles she played. Born in 1929, she grew up a Philadelphia socialite, but rather than live the debutante life, she moved to New York, where she became a model, a stage actress and a TV actress. Her acting icon was Ingrid Bergman, a star with a similar mix of icily perfect composure and radiant sensuality. When Kelly was 21, in 1951, she moved to Hollywood and, within months, scored her first lead role, as Gary Cooper's prim, pacifist bride...

Marilyn Monroe, born June 1, 1926
I spend a lot of time resenting popular opinion about female icons. For instance, I don't think Madonna is just a "business-smart chameleon": She's cooler than Michael Jackson, cannier than Prince, smarter than Elvis, and her very essence was more meaningful than most poet laureates' magnum opuses. So there. I don't think Grace Kelly was just a "living fairytale": She was a killer screen star with astonishing charisma in three Hitchcock movies -- and Mogambo. I reserve my strongest feelings for the woman who would've turned 86 today, Marilyn Monroe, since her continued pop culture presence is shallower and lamer than any icon before or since. Based on how popular she remains and how unpopular most of her filmography is, you'd think the reason her legacy lives on is because people figure one historical blonde has to be most famous, and it may as well...

Producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam and his Stone Angel production banner has acquired Arash Amel's spec script "Grace of Monaco", a film about actress Grace Kelly said to be along the same tone as "The King's Speech" says The Hollywood Reporter.

She left the big screen for good in 1956, going from "High Society" to the high society, and now, nearly 30 years after her death, the late Princess of Monaco will take another turn in the movies.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, European producer Pierre-Ange Le Pogam has won the rights to an in-demand spec script about one of Oscar winner Grace Kelly's greatest triumphs in her second life as Monacan royalty. The film will focus on the six month period in 1962 in which Princeess Grace used her smarts and charms to save the small nation's government from being overthrown by the French.
The basic history goes like this: French President Charles de Gaulle was unhappy that Monaco was a prime tax shelter for his citizens, and told Prince Rainier III that if they didn't change their laws in half a year's time, there would be repercussions. That's when Kelly sprung into action,...

Robert Wagner appreciates spending some time in Robert Osborne's shoes.
As the primetime host of Turner Classic Movies begins a three-month break for what the network calls "minor surgery" and a subsequent vacation, veteran actor Wagner is the first of several guest hosts enlisted. Friday (July 15), he'll introduce several films made by Western star Tex Ritter -- father of John, grandfather of Jason -- and the next night, he'll present Clark Gable movies ("Mogambo," "Band of Angels").

They're wonderful, and so is Bob [Osborne]. We've been friends for years. Ramon Novarro, Norma Shearer in Ernst Lubitsch's The Student Prince in Old Heidelberg As a William & Kate tie-in, Turner Classic Movies is showing several royal weddings, romances, escapades, and heartbreaks this evening. Stanley Donen's Royal Wedding (1951), starring Jane Powell, Fred Astaire, and Peter Lawford, is just about over. The best thing about the film is Fred Astaire dancing on walls and ceilings, a scene that, as far as I'm concerned, looks much more impressive than the bit showing Leonardo DiCaprio and Ellen Page walking on the "walls" of a folding Paris in Christopher Nolan's monumentally silly Inception. Roman Holiday (1953) is next, the William Wyler comedy-drama from a story by blacklistee Dalton Trumbo that earned Audrey Hepburn a Best Actress Oscar for being charming and pretty. That same year, also in the running were Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity, Ava Gardner in Mogambo, and Leslie Caron in Lili.

Kino Lorber will release the 1981 biographical film drama Priest of Love starring Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings) as famed author D.H. Lawrence on Blu-ray and DVD on June 21.
Ian McKellen (ctr.) and Janet Suzman are D.H. and Frieda Lawrence in Priest of Love.
Directed by Christopher Miles, the movie deals with the later years in the life of writer D.H. Lawrence (McKellen), his wife Frieda (Janet Suzman, Max) and their friend Dorothy Brett (Penelope Keith, TV’s To the Manor Born) after they have moved to the U.S. following the banning and burning of Lawrence’s latest novel, The Rainbow. Staying at the home of wealthy art patron Mabel Dodge Luhan (Ava Gardner, Mogambo), in Taos, New Mexico, Lawrence ponders his life, literature and sexuality before contracting tuberculosis and returning to Europe, where he writes the work for which he is best remembered, Lady Chatterley’s Lover.

Ava Gardner as a disguised version of Rita Hayworth in Joseph L. Mankiewicz's The Barefoot Contessa Ava Gardner is back on Turner Classic Movies on Thursday evening (well into Friday morning), with four releases from the 1950s followed by the "Find Ava" section — seven titles from the '40s in which Gardner had bit roles. The two highlights of the evening are John Ford's Mogambo (1953) and Joseph L. Mankiewicz's The Barefoot Contessa (1954). Mark Robson's The Little Hut (1957) is a watchable comedy, while George Cukor's Bhowani Junction (1957), a soap-operaish melodrama set in India, is the evening's embarrassment. Both co-star Stewart Granger. Among the Best Actress Oscar nominees of 1953, Deborah Kerr would have been my top pick for her adulterous wife in From Here to Eternity. Gardner would have been the runner-up for her vibrantly sensual performance in the African jungle-set Mogambo, a remake of Victor Fleming...

No 77: Grace Kelly 1929-82
Born in Philadelphia, the beautiful daughter of a model and a self-made Irish-American multi-millionaire who won gold medals as an Olympic oarsman, Kelly was Hollywood's ice queen of the McCarthy era, a cold war figure of upper-middle-class Catholic rectitude. One uncle was the vaudeville star Walter Kelly, another the Pulitzer-winning playwright, George Kelly, and she determined on an acting career while at college. In the late 40s and early 50s she worked as a model and on live New York TV. She entered the movies playing a minor role in Fourteen Hours in 1951, just after the banishment of Ingrid Bergman, the Hitchcock blonde who preceded her, and she retired in 1956, the year Bergman returned in triumph.
She grew up in a world of cafe society where show people, media folk, the nouveau-riches and other conspicuous consumers mingle, and she didn't leave it when, in a carefully engineered marriage,...
