Sam Fuller's superior western classic stars Rod Steiger, Brian Keith, Charles Bronson and Sarita Montiel, and takes on a tall stack of potent issues. A Reb sharpshooter denies the South's defeat, and goes west to join the Sioux nation where he can continue his war against the Yankees. This spin on 'The Man Without a Country' is one of Fuller's best thanks to a generous budget, unflinching action violence and committed performances. You sign up for a movie. You drop out. Then the lawsuit follows...
It happens all the time. The casting of movies is such a perilous art, that actors and actresses sign up for roles, and then they're chopped and changed. Rarely does it end up anywhere near a courtroom.
Yet sometimes it does. Here are nine varied instances where someone leaving a project led to legalities ensuing...
1. Kim Basinger - Boxing Helena
I may as well start with one of the most infamous cases of an actress dropping out of a film to which they'd apparently agreed.
Director Jennifer Lynch originally had Madonna pegged to take the lead in her debut feature, Boxing Helena. The story of a woman who has her limbs removed and is kept in a box (it's as charming as it sounds), the role was then offered to Kim Basinger when Madonna passed.

The Magnificent Ambersons
Landon’S Take:
Orson Welles is celebrated as one of the foremost visionaries in the history of American filmmaking. He’s also renowned as the perennial artist against the system. While both of these factors make Welles perhaps the ideal auteur – someone satisfied with nothing less than a perfect articulation of his individual vision within the collaborative medium of filmmaking – it also presents some unique problems in examining works that were taken away from him.
The classically celebrated auteurs of studio era Hollywood (e.g., Hawks, Ford, Hitchcock) were known for creating individuated worldviews across their body of work either despite or even because of the strictures inherent in Classical Hollywood filmmaking. This was not Welles, who from his rise to infamy with the 1938 “War of the Worlds” broadcast to his first studio feature made a name by challenging the assumed utilities of a medium. Neither could...

Adèle Exarchopoulos (‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’) and Cate Blanchett (‘Blue Jasmine’): Best Actress tie two years in a row at Los Angeles Film Critics Awards (photo: Léa Seydoux and Adèle Exarchopoulos in ‘Blue Is the Warmest Color’) (See previous post: "James Franco Tattoos, Gold Teeth: Lafca Winners." Another non-Hollywood Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s selection was Best Actress co-winner Adèle Exarchopoulos, cited for her performance as a young woman who falls in love with blue-haired Léa Seydoux in Abdellatif Kechiche’s controversial Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Blue Is the Warmest Color. The lesbian romantic drama also took home the Lafca’s Best Foreign Language Film Award. Blue was also the luckiest color, at least in the Best Actress category: Cate Blanchett was Exarchopoulos’ co-winner, for her performance in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine, in which she plays a character somewhat similar to A Streetcar Named Desire...

This is the second article in a three-part series.
Earlier this month, the acclaimed writer/producer/director Joss Whedon spoke at an Equality Now benefit dinner and suggested that the word “feminism” be removed from the English lexicon. According to Mr. Whedon, the word is problematic because it assumes that gender equality is not the “natural state” but something that needs to be achieved. Though several self-purported feminist bloggers have criticized this idea, Whedon’s speech does raise some interesting questions about how prejudice can hide away in the depths of language and rhetoric.
Thankfully, we have reached a point where shouting sexist comments is socially unacceptable and utterly disgraceful; anyone who does becomes ostracized by civil people. But that does not mean gender prejudices have been cured. The most corrosive type of sexism, and the one Whedon was getting at, is the kind embedded in words and institutions,...

Swimmer who found movie fame in a string of MGM musicals
Esther Williams, "Hollywood's Mermaid", who has died aged 91, swam her way through more than a dozen splashy MGM musicals in the 1940s and early 50s. While smiling at the camera, she was able to do a combination of crawl, breast and backstroke, and was forever blowing bubbles under water, seemingly having an inexhaustible supply of air.
Like the starlets Lana Turner, Kathryn Grayson and Donna Reed before her, she started out for MGM in a Hardy Family picture, Andy Hardy's Double Life (1942) – though one that allowed her to swim with Mickey Rooney. After being billed 19th in A Guy Named Joe (1943), she shot to stardom in her third film, Bathing Beauty (1944).
It started out as an average Red Skelton vehicle, first called Mr Co-Ed, then Sing and Swim, but Esther's superb figure and pretty features were heightened by Technicolor...

I love the quote by the late Edith Head, the legendary Hollywood costume designer, who said, "What a costume designer does is a cross between magic and camouflage. We create the illusion of changing the actors into what they are not. We ask the public to believe that every time they see a performer on the screen he`s become a different person."
There is something magical about an outfit. The clothes themselves can become just as iconic, if not more so than the actor's performance or the film itself. How many outfits can you recognize cosplayers wear for films you've never even seen?
Using modern designer threads, photographer Candice Milon brilliantly replicates some of cinema’s most recognizable outfits for a spread in French men's magazine Sport & Style. That means (for the right price), you could pay homage to your favorite movie characters, without going digging threw thrift stores...

Before every Major League Baseball All-Star Game, a prospects game is held. Referred to as The All-Star Futures Game, which is a Team USA vs. Team World friendly, it features the best young talent from teams’ minor-systems. Representing the Toronto Blue Jays this year was none other than top prospect Anthony Gose.
Gose, the Blue Jays’ second-highest rated player in their system – ranked below only catching phenom Travis d’Arnaud – started in centrefield for Team USA and had an amazing game before being substituted out prior the top of the fifth. The 21-year-old from Paramount, Calif. went 1-1 with a run and a walk as Team USA rallied from a 4-0 deficit through three-and-a-half innings to come back and crush the World team 17-5 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
Gose hit a ground ball single past the second baseman in the third inning, eventually scoring, and drew a four-pitch walk in the fourth.

This week we're reminding you of your invitation to join us at 7pm tonight when Peter Bradshaw (and a reader) will be liveblogging Three Colours Red on the site. And did anyone mention a drinking game … ?
The big story
And so we face the final frontier. Last night Andrew Pulver chuckled his way through Three Colours White. On Tuesday, Xan Brooks juggled pizza and existentialism during Three Colours Blue.
Tonight, Peter Bradshaw is in the hotseat, squished up alongside competition winner Joe Websper and Catherine Shoard, who'll be wrangling comments and overseeing the incredibly classy Three Colours Red drinking game (see below).
The third in the trilogy, Three Colours Red is also the most acclaimed. It's about a student (Irene Jacob) who befriends a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who is spying on his neighbours.

Smackdown! October 21st 2011.
We are in Mexico City, Mexico for Smackdown! And who better to join us first but Mexico’s own WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio! And he gets himself a nice response as Michael Cole, Josh Matthews and Booker T welcome us to the show. Del Rio brings up his Last Man Standing match against John Cena. Then he says tonight’s match against Big Show wont be happening after the attack from John Cena on Monday. Del Rio said it was his dream to come here and compete for Mexico but John Cena took it away, so this Sunday he will make Cena pay. And then, something in Spanish. I’m not here to translate though so figure that out yourselves. Teddy Long lands out on stage. Teddy said the doctors say Del Rio is cleared to compete. Teddy asks the people if they want to see Del Rio vs.

Friday Night Smackdown! October 14th 2011
9 Days before Vengeance, we are in Dallas and Teddy Long is kicking off the show. And joining him on stage is the new interim General Manager, John Laurinaitis. God I hate spelling that. He’s Johnny Ace from now on. Long reminds us that tonight’s Smackdown becomes second longest running episodic television show behind Raw. Ace says he’s here lending Raw support. Long announces the largest Battle Royal in WWE history, Ace adds that the winner gets to choose a title and get a match Tonight! “If you’re ready to see this Battle Royal start right now. Give me a Holla Holla Holla!” And I assume someone gave him one, because here comes the entire Raw roster followed closely by Smackdown. Matt Striker is even wrestling.

Live from New Orleans
Miz and R-Truth had brought tickets to see the show but Laurentis came down with security and had them escorted out of the arena.
Match: Sheamus defeated Christian via pinfall
Solid opener. Sheamus was on top early but after being knocked off the top turnbuckle to the outside he appeared to lose his bearings and could often barely stand whilst throwing erratic punches. They put this over really well during several mat exchanges and it made Sheamus look very courageous in the process.
After numerous counters and reversals it appeared that Christian had the match won when he took out Sheamus with a sphere on the outside and another one inside the ring but this only earnt him a near fall. Sensing that he had to raise the stakes somewhat Christian went to the top rope and attempted a diving headbutt but Sheamus rolled out of the way.

Director best known for Georgy Girl, a romantic comedy set in 60s London
The film and TV director Silvio Narizzano, who has died aged 84, handled several genres throughout his career, including black comedies, period pieces, social dramas, action thrillers and horror movies. But one picture, his swinging London romantic comedy Georgy Girl (1966), stands out from the rest of his eclectic filmography.
Georgy Girl was part of the trend in which British cinema shifted the focus from provincial life and back to the metropolis, celebrating new freedoms and social possibilities. Narizzano, influenced by the French New Wave and his chic contemporaries Richard Lester, John Schlesinger and Tony Richardson, explored such "shocking" subjects as abortion, illegitimacy, adultery and sexual promiscuity with a light touch.
Silvio Narizzano, best known for the 1966 swinging London comedy-drama Georgy Girl, died July 26. Narizzano was 84. Based on Margaret Forster's novel, and starring Lynn Redgrave, Alan Bates, James Mason, and Charlotte Rampling, Georgy Girl was considered daring at the time because its plot included sex (of the non-marital kind), abortion, and adultery. For her performance as the homely, ungainly Georgy, Lynn Redgrave was nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award and for a BAFTA in the Best British Actress category. Additionally, she shared the New York Film Critics Circle's Best Actress Award with (eventual Oscar winner) Elizabeth Taylor (Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?). Narizzano, for his part, was nominated by the Directors Guild of America. Born in Montreal (Feb. 8, 1927) to an Italian-American family, Narizzano began his show business career on the Canadian stage and television. He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he worked on British TV. Narizzano's first...

Disney recently released its first trailer for John Carter and fans can get a further taste of what's in store with an upcoming four-issue comic book mini-series.
Marvel says its upcoming title John Carter: World of Mars "reveals the shocking events that transpire before the motion-picture story begins by showing fans just how John Carter, Princess Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas are set on the path that would bring them all together. Amidst this brutal thousand-year war, find out what decisions were made that let events escalate this far - and why."
Writing duties will fall to New York Times best-selling author Peter David (Incredible Hulk, X-Factor), while The Dark Tower artist Luke Ross will do the line work. Both Ross and David have converted existing material to comic form in the past with a great deal of success, lending a strong pedigree to this title.

The Music Room (Criterion) Satyajit Ray’s 1958 masterpiece looks at the life of a fallen aristocrat as a metaphor for an India that is not only becoming Westernized, but modernized technologically and culturally beyond recognition. When the beloved music room, where he has hosted lavish concerts in the past, starts falling into disrepair as attendance drops steadily, the man realizes his way of life is vanishing. Stunningly shot in black & white, one of Ray’s finest works. Bonuses: Documentary on Ray from 1984 by Shyam Benegal; Interviews with Ray biographer Andrew Robinson and filmmaker Mira Nair; Excerpt from 1981 roundtable discussion between Ray, critic Michael Ciment, director Claude Sautet. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
Beauty And The Beast (Criterion) Jean Cocteau’s sublime adaptation of the classic fairy tale become a beloved classic upon its 1946 release, and hasn’t faded since.

The Rapture of Unreason
“I grew up around Christians who believed in a seven day creation, preached the reality of Hell and Judgement, and railed against the lie that was evolution. They were also, for the most part, racists and homophobes… And the only difference between them and me was that I had a father who shoved a science fiction paperback into my pre-teen hands and ordered me to read it. After all, it’s pretty hard to be prejudiced against blacks and gays when you’re a-okay with Klingons and the Green Men of Mars.”
– Lou Anders, Bowing to the Future
So the 21st of May came and went without a whiff of the Rapture, nary a hint of Moby Douche, the Great White Fail, breaching the firmament above. No star called Wormwood fallen from the sky, turning a third of the waters to tasty absinthe. No angels treading...

The final outfit for analysis from To Catch a Thief (1954, directed by Alfred Hitchcock) encompasses and challenges the absolute femininity of Grace Kelly, here playing wilful blueblood Frances Stevens. After suffering an embarrassing verbal defeat by mademoiselle Danielle Foussard (Brigitte Auber), in simply donning a coral pink top and pleated skirt with driving gloves, Frances is back in control.
This particular ensemble, or rather the skirt, was a request by Grace to the film’s costume designer Edith Head. Keen at this point in the story to restore what she saw as a more ‘womanly’ inference to Frances, trousers, or even Capri pants, were not considered enough. Yet this is not a moment of vanity, or indeed self awareness for Grace, but an important clue as to how Frances overcomes...

Blow Out (Criterion) Brian De Palma’s greatest Hitchcock homage, with a dash of Antonioni thrown in for good measure. John Travolta gives one of his best turns as a sound-effects engineer who unwittingly records a political assassination, then finds himself hunted by a ruthless hitman (John Lithgow, a memorably creepy psycho) after saving the life of the kindly, albeit dim-witted call girl (Nancy Allen, excellent) who was with the deceased. Terrific blend of suspense and very black humor, perhaps De Palma’s finest hour as an auteur. Beautifully shot by Vilmos Zsigmond. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with De Palma, Allen, cameraman Garrett Brown; Photo gallery; De Palma’s 1967 feature Murder a la Mod; Trailer. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 2.0 surround.
Kes (Criterion) Ken Loach’s landmark 1970 film is both a heart-rending portrait of adolescence, and a pointed socio-political commentary on life in the North of England.

This is the most conspicuous outfit Grace Kelly as Frances Stevens wears in To Catch a Thief (1954), principally because there is little narrative justification for it being so elaborate.
Her 18th century lamé gown, for example, is deliberately ostentatious. It is costume designer Edith Head’s show stopping finale, intended to throw all attention onto Frances as part of her and John Robie’s (Cary Grant) elaborate ruse. This exotic beach wear, however, is jarringly visible for no other reason than because Frances enjoys attention; far from ingratiating her to Robie, or us, she is presented as self-admiring and rather childish.
Note how Frances pauses for a moment on entering the hotel lobby, that absurd wide brimmed hat balancing unsteadily on her head. The gaze from passers by, generally older...

Some people aren't keen on the direction Smallville has taken in the last few seasons (I'm looking at you, Robert), but I think that period has produced some of the best episodes of the series. With the characters in early adulthood there has been a consistently higher level of maturity and scope to the stories. Partly this stems from the show's darker tone. Some of it also comes from scripts that explore the challenges Clark faces in maintaining the moral high-ground on the mean streets of the city. It's a challenge reminiscent of that facing Bruce Wayne in the The Dark Knight and an intriguing progression from Smallville's early days in Kansas.
To coincide with the start of the show's tenth and final season (tonight at 8/7C on The CW) Warner Home Video has released Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season on Blu-ray and DVD. The good news is...

Watching a boy become a man takes well over the 18 years that mark the official transition. Watching an alien boy become a man of steel is nine years in the making so far and is due to be wrapped up after one more year. In real life, there are many moments that define a person with a lot of mundane filler in between. The same can be said for this origin story that has slowly woven pieces of prior incarnations of our beloved Kryptonian into a completely new hero. Thankfully, the pace picks up in season nine as we inch closer to the climax.
Clark Kent, played by Tom Welling, is about to test for his brown belt in superheroism.

Few comics pros are too young to remember Corey Haim in "The Lost Boys" or "Dream a Little Dream," and news of his death showed up all over the Twitter Report feed today. Kevin Smith put it best, I believe, and you can check out reactions from Mike Norton, Valerie D'Orazio and others below.
Elsewhere, "Moon" director Duncan Jones revealed the comic book film he wants to make, and though he may not be attached to the new "Judge Dredd" project, studios should know who to talk to when they start scouting again. His thoughts are retweeted below along with some "John Carter of Mars" artwork from Mitch Breitweiser, Todd McFarlane's Oscars assessment and Brian Michael Bendis' solution to this week's Amazon mishap.
It's all in the Twitter Report for March 10th, 2010.

General Zod is one of those characters that has an interesting back story in the Superman franchise. The character was originally created in 1961 by Roger Bernstein and George Papp, but didn’t become remotely as popular as when portrayed by Terence Stamp in Superman I & II. Since then, each reincarnation of the character has only been a monument to that role. Until now, that is.
Callum Blue has been added to this season’s cast of Smallville as the general who was sentenced to the Phantom Zone after attempting to rebel against his Kryptonian government. He was released at the end of the last season, and looks to be building his own army already in tonight’s premiere.

You never know who you're going to randomly bump into here at Comic-Con. Take last night. I'm innocently munching on a spicy tuna roll at Warner Bros' Asian-themed cocktail reception and who should wander over to say hello but Smallville exec producer Brian Peterson. Good times, right? It gets better. The dude, who's in town for the show's historic Con panel on Sunday, talked my ear off about his blockbuster plans for season 9 and beyond. What follows after the jump are some of the highlights… * Season 9's theme is "Clark's darkest hour." * Look for a season-long love triangle with Clark, Lois, and Red-Blue Blur. * Chloe, still grieving over Jimmy's death, will immerse herself in all things Watchtowerish. Peterson also hinted at some tension for Chlark when she realizes she's no longer content just being his sidekick. * We'll find out why Clark isn't flying in a scene with him and...

Zod will return—in the flesh—to Smallville this fall. And he’ll be played, TV Guide reports, by Callum Blue. Fans may know Blue from his stint on Dead Like Me. Of course, Terence Stamp portrayed General Zod in the first two Christopher Reeve Superman movies. For details, see this link.
Eddie Cibrian (pictured left), one of the heroes of Invasion, joins CSI: Miami this autumn. He’ll be one of the good guys.
And 90210’s Meghan Markle has signed with Fringe. She’ll have a recurring role as a novice FBI agent in the series’ second season.
Meanwhile, Dan Payne—seen, however briefly, as the pioneering superhero Dollar Bill in Watchmen—is co-starring in the upcoming thriller Cabin In The Woods (co-scripted by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard).

British actor Callum Blue has joined the cast of Smallville as the Kryptonian villain General Zod.
Blue, 31, whose credits include The Tudors and Secret Diary of A Call Girl, will appear in the upcoming ninth season of the show, says The Hollywood Reporter.
The supervillain previously appeared on screen briefly in 1978's Superman and more fully in the 1980 sequel Superman II, where the role was played by Terence Stamp.
Stamp now voices Clark's father Jor-El in the series, a role played on the big screen by Marlon Brando.
The recent finale of Smallville's Season 8 showed Zod appearing outside Lex Luthor's former home. The mansion is now the abode of Tess Mercer, Lex's successor as LuthorCorp CEO and also the editor of the Daily Planet.
Zod was previously featured in Smallville Season 5 as an evil spirit in the Phantom Zone dimension who possessed Lex's body and planned to turn Earth into a Krypton-like world.
