‘Scuse them while they sue this guy? A company owned and operated by the family of Jimi Hendrix is suing a former family member over the alleged theft of one of the late rock icon’s guitars, according to court documents obtained by TheWrap. The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday by Experience Hendrix LLC, which according to the filing “runs the merchandise, music licensing and catalogue management (among other things)” of the late “Purple Haze” musician. Jimi Hendrix's estate has reached an agreement with Legendary Pictures for an official biopic of the late rock legend. Director Paul Greengrass (United 93, Captain Phillips) is in talks to helm the project, based on a script from Scott Silver (8 Mile) and featuring actual Hendrix recordings, Deadline reports.
Greengrass and Legendary's Thomas Tull approached Experience Hendrix four years ago, touting a script from Max Borenstein, but they were unable to come to an agreement as the estate worried a film could hurt sales from the guitar god's catalog. The filmmakers,...

Paul Greengrass doesn’t give up, you’ve got to give him that. The Captain Phillips helmer has been attempting to craft a Jimi Hendrix biopic for over four years, and despite lots of stops and starts along the way, the project is once again alive at Legendary Pictures. 8 Mile scribe Scott Silver is penning a draft for the untitled film, which has finally received the go-ahead from Experience Hendrix, the musician’s estate.
At the end of 2010, Greengrass’ Hendrix pic hit a huge snag when the rock n’ roll icon’s estate refused to give any kind of approval for a movie, leading to the film going on ice. Legendary Pictures chief Thomas Tull kept with it though, ordering another script and then trying to get approval from Hendrix’s estate. Unfortunately, it didn’t work and the project fell through the cracks. Though he could have seen the film through,...

Paul Greengrass' long in gestation biopic about rock Jimi Hendrix seems to be picking up steam again at Legendary Pictures.
Four years ago the filmmaker attempted to go forward on the film, but backed off when he did not receive the co-operation of the estate of the late musician.
That patience has now paid off with Legendary and Experience Hendrix coming to an agreement that will see the film become what aims to be the officially sanctioned film about the psychedelically dressed guitar virtuoso and rock icon who died at just 27 in 1970.
With that co-operation, Hendrix's best known tunes like Purple Haze and Foxy Lady will now be used as part of the film.
Scott Silver ("8 Mile," "The Fighter") has been set to write the script and negotiations are in various stages for Greengrass to direct and Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, and Peter Afterman to...

The Wonder Years
Cast: Fred Savage, Josh Saviano, Danica McKellar, Dan Lauria, Alley Mills, Daniel Stern, Jason Hervey
Due Out: October 7, 2014
Who’S It For? “The Wonder Years” is timeless. Thankfully it doesn’t feel dated simply because I was a child of the ’80s trying to understand life in the late ’60s. “The Wonder Years” was my gateway drug to a nostalgia I didn’t even know. Like many of you, I grew up with Kevin. I hoped for Winnie, I had friends like Paul (and probably was Paul more than I realized).
I can’t wait to show “The Wonder Years” to my son. I’ll have to wait, because he hasn’t even turned two yet, but now I have six episodes to show him, and hopefully that will just be the beginning.

The agency has signed Experience Hendrix LLC, the family-owned enterprise that controls the songs and rights of the legendary late guitar player. The agency’s first order of business: to amplify its client’s efforts to produce a feature film chronicling Hendrix’s life story. The film will be the very first to be authorized by and have the full cooperation of Experience Hendrix — and believe me, many actors and film companies will covet that opportunity. The company was founded by the guitarist’s father James “Al” Hendrix and now is helmed by Janie Hendrix, President and CEO and the sister of the guitar great, who died in 1970 after recording just four albums that were enough to make him arguably the greatest rocker to plug a guitar into an amp. Linda Keith lent a young blues player a guitar belonging to her boyfriend, Keith Richards – and the rest is history. In a rare interview, she tells her story
Rock'n'roll has had many pivotal moments, but few are as clear cut as when Linda Keith, a 20-year-old British Vogue model and blues fanatic, lent a virtually unknown Jimi Hendrix a white Fender Stratocaster, the instrument that would become forever entwined with the guitarist's legendary and unsurpassed technique.
One person rightfully aggrieved by this gesture was the guitar's owner and Linda's boyfriend of three years, Keith Richards. Richards, then on the Rolling Stones' 1966 tour of the Us, wasn't going to get his guitar or his striking, dark-haired girlfriend back – she had made it her mission to launch Hendrix's career. But he and Brian Jones did write the song Ruby Tuesday about her – "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday/ Who could hang a name on you?...

You probably only remember two things about the Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is by My Side: the studio isn't featuring any of Hendrix's music in the film, and Andre 3000, Outkast's Andre Benjamin, looks a hell of a lot like Hendrix. We have a first look at Benjamin as Hendrix at the mic, and it's pretty amazing. We haven't heard any updates regarding the use of music in the movie. Hendrix' estate and company Experience Hendrix maintain copyright over the musician's catalogue. The studio avoided any legal issues right out of the gate by opting to not use any of Hendrix' music. It made sense, somewhat, since the story focuses on Hendrix' prefame years as a backup musician. Instead, Hendrix will perform covers of the Beatles, Muddy...

The press is the real villain in Broadchurch's moral-heavy fifth instalment. Here's Louisa's review...
This review contains spoilers.
Since green boy Olly sent that first investigation-compromising Tweet, Broadchurch has narrowed its eyes at the press and waited for it to start claiming its own victims. Jack Marshall was the first of those, the discovery of his body the visual equivalent of an Aesop’s moral about looking before you leap to conclusions.
Jack’s demise was a demonstration of the press' ability to hollow out a person’s life, shove a hand in, and puppeteer around what’s left to tell whichever story sells. The front page narrative cast him in turn as creepy Jack, hugger of young boys, then saucy Jack, wedder of child brides, and now what? Suicide Jack, who must have had something to hide? If you're wondering how you can film a Jimi Hendrix biopic and not feature any songs by the iconic electric guitarist, you're not alone. That's exactly what's happening in All Is By My Side, though. The new feature is currently shooting in Ireland — where producer Sean McKittrick says it's "easier... to recreate 1967 London" —starring Outkast's Andre Benjamin (Andre 3000). Henrix's estate and company Experience Hendrix control rights to the late star's musical catalogue, but filmmakers aren't worrying about that. Instead, they're excluding Hendrix's signature songs and featuring cover versions of tunes by the Beatles, Muddy Waters, and other artists from the era. Hendrix actually performed many of...

Outkast's Andre Benjamin might not be able to perform any Jimi Hendrix songs in his upcoming biopic about the late great rocker, but that doesn't mean he won't have any tracks to sing in the movie. The folks behind "All By My Side" are getting around the copyright issue with Hendrix's estate by having Benjamin perform a series of covers Hendrix did of other bands' music to help make the movie as realistic as possible.
It turns out that this is actually not that big of a deal for the movie's creators. Producer Sean McKittrick told Rolling Stone that he never went to Experience Hendrix, the group that controls the copyrights for Hendrix's songs, because he knew that they likely wouldn't need to use them.

There's been a lot of speculation over which songs/recordings the producers of All Is By My Side (the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic starring OutKast's André 3000, currently filming in Ireland) will or won't have at their disposal without the approved consent of the Jimi Hendrix estate. In what I can't help but think is a semi-conniving sidetrack to Experience Hendrix LLC's blatant disapproval of the production, it's been announced (via Rolling Stone) that the film (set during Hendrix's pre-fame years in London, roughly 1966-1967) will instead feature new recordings of André 3000 performing many of the songs Hendrix himself covered during that time period.

Still now word on what will be done about the Experience Hendrix, LLC music rights matter, with regards to the film. Soon after the official confirmation that the project was a go, representatives of Jimi Hendrix's estate weighed in on plans for Andre 3000's upcoming biopic of the guitar legend, accusing the filmmakers of moving forward with the project without their official permission. Well, it looks like the statement released by Experience Hendrix, LLC. 2 weeks ago, on the Andre 3000 Jimi Hendrix project that many of you have been excited about, hasn't stalled the film's production, as you can see from the pics within this post. First, a quick recap... the rapper/actor is indeed starring as Jimi Hendrix in a new movie that has already begun filming in Ireland, titled All Is By My Side, which will follow Hendrix’s years in England, from 1966 to 1967, when he put together his debut album, Are You Experienced. The feature film is written and directed by John Ridley (primarily a screenwriter; this will be...

Gil Evans, perhaps the second-greatest arranger in jazz after Duke Ellington, was born Ian Ernest Gilmore Green on May 13, 1912 in Toronto, Canada (Evans was his stepfather's name). Though best known for his collaborations with Miles Davis, Evans released many great albums as a bandleader and created a highly influential style that changed the course of jazz history.
Though self-taught, by age 21 Evans was leading a big band that became the house group at the Rendezvous Ballroom in Balboa Beach. Eventually it was fronted and then led by singer Skinnay Ennis, and Claude Thornhill joined Evans in providing arrangements for them. Thornhill then moved to New York to start his own band, and in 1941 invited Evans to New York to write arrangements. Soon Evans's arrangements with their lush, hazy, floating textures defined the Thornhill style.

I first heard about this project years ago – on a now-defunct and long-forgotten FX show called Sound F/X – which featured Orlando Jones, of all people. Lawrence Fishburne was once set to play Jimi Hendrix, but it never happened. A 2010 attempt to film the rock star’s life – to be directed by Paul Greengrass and backed by Legendary Pictures – was also thwarted when the famously protective Hendrix family denied any access to the man’s iconic music.
Now after some earlir rumors, Deadline reports that one half of OutKast (the fun half, some might say), Andre 3000 (Aka Andre Benjamin) is confirmed to play Jimi Hendrix in a biopic called All Is By My Side, to be directed by Three Kings screenwriter John Ridley, based on his original script. The kicker: it will take a sort of prequel approach, depicting the singer-guitarist in his years before he became the psychedelic guitar god we know and love.

Unless estate is granted 'full participation', the film-makers cannot use original Hendrix recordings
The makers of a planned Jimi Hendrix biopic, to star André 3000 as the revolutionary guitarist, have hit an obstacle in the form of the Hendrix estate.
Experience Hendrix LLC said it would not let the makers of All Is By My Side, directed by John Ridley, use any original Hendrix recordings unless the estate is granted "full participation".
The estate said: "Experience Hendrix, LLC, the family-owned company entrusted with safeguarding the legacy of Jimi Hendrix and administrator of the Jimi Hendrix music and publishing catalogue, has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.

In addition to headlining the surprise sequel to "10 Things I Hate About You," "Captain America: The First Avenger" British cutie Hayley Atwell will soon be trekking back a few decades to star in the Jimi Hendrix biopic "All Is By My Side."
According to The Playlist, Atwell was confirmed for the film today, despite some song licensing issues the film has had with Hendrix's company Experience Hendrix (Variety states that the movie will utilize interview and archive materials).
Reportedly, the movie will detail the time period from 1966 to 1967, when Hendrix was first discovered by Keith Richards' girlfriend Linda Keith, who then introduced Jimi Hendrix to the Rolling Stones' management and set his career into motion.
Atwell's role for "All Is By My Side" has not yet been confirmed, but just one look at a few photos of Linda Keith and it's clear Atwell's a sure fit for portraying that part.

The biggest roadblock to getting a biopic about a musician made is clearing the rights to the (usually expensive) songs and pleasing the estate. If the artist in question is still alive, the process can be made slightly easier, but if not, projects can drag in develop as everyone involved tries to find common ground to meet on financially and creatively. Which leads us to "All Is By My Side," the long, long brewing Jimi Hendrix pic with Andre 3000 in the lead that, out of nowhere, was announced earlier this week as gearing up to start shooting in a matter of weeks. We wondered if this might mean Experience Hendrix were on board with the movie too -- turns out, they're not.

Plans to make a Jimi Hendrix biopic starring Outkast's Andre 3000 may have hit a snag: The family of the late rock legend is against it, saying that they won't allow rights to the music. According to the Wall Street Journal, Experience Hendrix LLC, the family-owned company that manages Hendrix's music and publishing, released a statement saying that it does not support the film. "[The Estate] has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation.” That said, Experience Hendrix doesn't necessarily oppose all projects, it just won't sanction any films without the group's approval. "CEO Janie Hendrix, sister of Jimi Hendrix, and the Eh board, have not ruled out a ‘biopic' in the future, though producing partners would, out of necessity, have to involve the company from the...

Darko Entertainment, Subotica Entertaiment and Matador Pictures have today announced plans to move forward with All Is By My Side , an unlicensed biopic of Jimi Hendrix that will star Andrew Benjamin (Aka Andre 3000) in the lead. Joining him are Hayley Atwell ( Captain America: The First Avenger ) and Imogen Poots ( Fright Night ) with John Ridley both writing and directing. The estate of the late musician has come out against the film, however, and today issued a statement to the Wall Street Journal that claims that their company, Experience Hendrix, Lcc, "has made it known many times in the past that no such film, were it to include original music or copyrights created by Jimi Hendrix, can be undertaken without its full participation." I loved this episode. It was face-paced, it was funny, it was deep and it had the Beatles.
The title "Lady Lazarus," comes from a Sylvia Plath poem of the same name about a woman who "dies" multiple times but is each time reborn, like a phoenix, out of her ashes, explained with lots of Nazi imagery that shows she feels oppressed by this survival. She wishes they would just let her die. So, Megan is our Lady Lazarus, and her transformation in this episode very much mimics the poem. It's the death of her life in advertising and her rebirth as an actress. "Lady Lazarus" calls dying an art that is both her "call" and "theatrical," which mirrors how Megan feels, with a calling to the theater. By comparing this transition to a death and rebirth, it's probably signaling a more complete change than we yet realize. Thinking of...

Considering how long this has been in development, and the number of similar projects that have fallen by the wayside including a mooted Paul Greengrass directed biopic, and a fictional road trip style movie, we figured the Andre 3000 starring Jimi Hendrix movie was not going to happen. Hell, even as far back as 2008 the actor/rapper himself said, "The funny thing with the biopics [is their uncertainty], I mean, it’s the same thing with ‘Hendrix.’ It’s kinda like, until you are on set doing it you can’t say what’s going on, because everybody wants to do the movie, but there are so many things that go into a biopic.” Well, it looks like the movie is actually going ahead.

Jimi Hendrix Winterland Hendrix in the West The Dick Cavett Show Blue Wild Angel: Live at the Isle of Wight (Experience Hendrix/Sony Legacy)
There's no question what the most important release is in the latest fusillade from the Hendrix estate. Dribs and drabs of Hendrix's fabled three-night stand at San Francisco's Winterland celebrating the Experience's second anniversary have been issued before: three tracks on The Jimi Hendrix Concerts in '82, and 11 on a 1987 Ryko CD specifically dedicated to Winterland material and quite well chosen. But there were two sets per night, so collectors knew those tracks were just the tip of the iceberg. The new four-cd set isn't everything from the six sets (technical difficulties are alluded to), but 35 tracks, which is certainly enough for all but fanatical completists, given how much repertoire gets heard multiple times. Since Hendrix was more of an improviser than most rock musicians,...

Reports say Hendrix estate rejected mooted project involving director Paul Greengrass and actor Anthony Mackie
Hollywood has been trying to bring a film about Jimi Hendrix to the big screen for decades, with actors such as Will Smith, Eddie Murphy and Outkast's Andre 3000 all reportedly interested in the role at one time or another. Now, the latest attempt – directed by Paul Greengrass and starring the Hurt Locker's Anthony Mackie – has foundered, allegedly because his estate fears that a warts-and-all biopic might hit record sales.
Deadline reports that Hendrix's estate rejected a package put together by Legendary Pictures, the firm behind The Dark Knight and Watchmen, earlier this year, stating that it had not been involved at an early enough stage.
"Legendary proceeded without our permission, direction or involvement," said Janie Hendrix, president of the Experience Hendrix company. "It didn't 'fall apart,' it never was. When we do the Jimi Hendrix feature film bio,...

Anyone?
My initial response to this was surprise! In recent years, there’ve been numerous attempts to bring Jimi Hendrix’s life-story to the theatrical screen, with such musician/actors as Lenny Kravitz and Outkast’s Andre Benjamin expressing interest in assuming the starring role of the greatest guitarist in the history of rock music. But securing rights to the man’s story has proven to be quite the challenge with Experience Hendrix, the gatekeeper to the musician’s estate, which is run by his stepsister, Janie Hendrix.
As we’ve previously reported on this blog, there are Two Jimi Hendrix films in the works that we’ve known of, and one of them, the Mackie version, now looks like it’s dead.

Mike Fleming is reporting that the estate of late rocker Jimi Hendrix has turned down a promising pitch for a Paul Greengrass directed biopic of the American Icon that would have starred Hurt Locker actor Anthony Mackie in the title role.
The rejected package, which included financial clout from Legendary Pictures and a commitment from the talent to film next year, was turned down because the family estate feared a high-profile film might hurt back catalogue sales. (If you believe that, you’ll believe anything).
The movie is the latest in a long line of potential Hendrix biopics (Will Smith & Eddie Murphy have previously tried, among others) that have been snuffed out by Experience Hendrix, an estate that heavily protects the singer’s memory and the four influential albums he made in his short but productive 27 years of life.

In some alternate universe out there, there’s a film by Paul Greengrass starring Anthony Mackie as the talented and troubled Jimi Hendrix. Sadly, we don’t live in that universe because Experience Hendrix has officially denied the rights to the man’s music to be used for the project. The explanation given was that they feared the film would hurt sales of the back catalog. Of course, anyone who’s kept up with the aborted attempts and the successful adaptations of Hendrix’s life knows that’s just a press-friendly excuse. The real reason is a fear of how the guitar master will be portrayed when it comes to his drug abuse. Before the Greengrass project was announced in 2009 with Legendary effectively crafting the script and talent package to entice Experience Hendrix into granting rights, there was the attempt from Dragonslayer in 2006. Admittedly, the company that claimed they had the rights (and didn’t) and Quentin Tarantino...

I don't normally go see cover acts, mostly because of the constant belly aching from my friends in "real" bands about how those "Freebird" playing yahoos are always taking money out of their pockets. And after getting burned one too many times by lame tribute acts (Ok, just that once, but you know who you are and you should be ashamed!), I was wary of the "Experience Hendrix" tribute tour because I love Jimi Hendrix and refuse to let some hack ruin him for me.
