A different actor would've played Lee Adama on the reimagined "Battlestar Galactica" had Jamie Bamber listened to his gut. Lee is one of the series' main characters, the son of Commander William Adama (Edward James Olmos) and a reimagined version of the original series hero Apollo (Richard Hatch) — "Apollo" is simply Lee's pilot callsign rather his given name.
Bamber hasn't had the most illustrious career since "Galactica" ended; the fantasy series "17th Precinct," which reunited him with co-stars James Callis and Tricia Helfer and co-creator Ron Moore, never went past the pilot. But that's not a reflection on his acting...

The best fan-made web-series, Star Trek Continues, returns with a new episode. Like the original Star Trek show it’s based on, it doesn’t shy away from controversial issues. Does the latest episode “What Ships Are For” maintain the series’ quality?
“What Ships Are For” is the ninth of a planned 11 episodes of this excellent show, and it’s too bad it will be coming to an end soon because it’s far and away the finest fan-made web show in production. What makes it so good is its fidelity to the classic 1966-1969 Star Trek TV series, which worked as a metaphor for socio-cultural issues of the day. (Something missing from the recent Jj Abrams films). Star Trek Continues also dives into a hot-button issue by tacking the subject of refugees.
In this episode, the crew of the Enterprise answer an Sos and find a society that is literally color blind,...

Welcome to Random Roles, wherein we talk to actors about the characters who defined their careers. The catch: They don’t know beforehand what roles we’ll ask them to talk about.
The actor: Since making her film debut in 1969, Jane Seymour has experienced a number of career renaissances and repeatedly managed to reinvent herself as an actor, something that happens all too infrequently in Hollywood. While you can attribute part of her success to her ability to bounce between high drama and lowbrow comedy seemingly without blinking an eye, it’s just as likely because she doesn’t like to lose. With a filmography that includes spies (Live And Let Die), Cylons (Battlestar Galactica), century-spanning romance (Somewhere In Time), frat-boy comedy (Wedding Crashers), and life in a frontier town (Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman), Seymour keeps audiences guessing as to where she’s going to turn up next. We're a few weeks ahead of the release of "Star Trek Beyond," and a few months out from the Bryan Fuller-produced new "Star Trek" TV series. Between those events though comes the franchise's 50th anniversary with numerous related works tying into it including a new book from Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman which overs the first twenty-five years of the franchise - namely the original series, the six original cast films, and the launch of "Star Trek: The Next Generation".

As a new Star Trek TV show is planned for 2017, we select the show's top 25 episodes from its classic Original and Animated series...
The impact of Star Trek, a television series that altered the world's expectations and put an indelible mark on many cultures around the world, is often underestimated until you realise who it had an impact on and what they went on to achieve.
If you only ever watch 25 episodes or, rather, stories from the original(ish) run of Star Trek, these are they, at least in my opinion. The only rules in place being that this selection is drawn only from the series that just called themselves Star Trek (so that's what we now call Star Trek: The Original Series, or Tos and Star Trek: The Animated Series, or Tas), and two-part episodes count as one story... The more Trek-astute of you may realise...

Yesterday we found out that producer Adi Shankar (Dredd, Punisher: Dirty Laundry) would team with Stewart Yost to co-direct a dark new superhero series for HBO titled Gods And Secrets, which is said to be (and very much sounds to be) inspired by Alan Moore's Watchmen. Now The Wrap reports that Denise Richards (Wild Things, Starship Troopers, The World Is Not Enough) and Jane Seymour (Live And Let Die, How I Met Your Mother, Battlestar Galactica) have joined the cast in unspecified roles. Gods And Secrets will focus on the exploits of a superteam known as the "Guardians of Justice", and will explore "the darker ramifications of a world filled with superheroes — for the people they protect and the famous heroes themselves." Former WWE Superstar Diamond Dallas Page, Jackson Rathbone (The Twilight Saga), Kellan Lutz (The Legend Of Hercules), Sharni Vinson (You're Next) and Andy Milonakis will also star,...

Patrick Macnee as John Steed
Patrick Macnee, who was much loved for his role as John Steed in The Avengers and also enjoyed a successful film career, has died at his home in California at the age of 93.
Born into a wealthy English family, Macnee studied at Eton until he was expelled for selling pornography, went on to serve in the Royal Navy and then travelled to Canada to try his hand at acting, launching a career that would last until his retirement 12 years ago.
Following an early appearance in The Life And Death Of Colonel Blimp, he went on to deliver notable performances in films including The Howling, Waxwork, A View To A Kill and This Is Spinal Tap. He lent his vocal talents to Battlestar Galactica and challenged Columbo. Alongside the Avengers, he appeared in other classic TV series like Rawhide and Magnum Pi. He played both Sherlock Holmes and Doctor.

Patrick Macnee, star of popular 1960s British TV series "The Avengers," died Thursday of natural causes at his home in California, surrounded by his family. He was 93.
Macnee starred on hit spy show "The Avengers," which ran on British television -- and was eventually rebroadcast around the globe -- from 1961 to 1969. The series also staged a short revival in the '70s.
Macnee was cast as assistant John Steed, second billing to Ian Hendry's Dr. David Keel character, but as the show continued, Macnee's quirky, bowler-wearing Steed became more popular, and he took over as the series lead after Hendry departed in 1961. Macnee played across from actresses such as Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg, Linda Thorson, and Joanna Lumley on the progressively feminist series, which was also notable for Macnee's insistence that his character never use a gun.

Blackhat What an ugly week for new DVD and Blu-ray releases. It's hard to even take it seriously, but at the top of the heap (only because it's the first one I'm writing about) is Michael Mann's supremely disappointing Blackhat. Some people attempted to make excuses for this attempted mess of a cyber thriller, but if you're interested in my take, click here.
Mortdecai I skipped this one and I feel no shame in doing so. In fact, that's all I'm going to say about it.
Still Alice Okay, now this isn't a bad film, I guess I just get frustrated every time I see it mentioned because Julianne Moore did not deliver the best female performance last year and yet, here we are, Oscar winner Julianne Mooore... because "it was her time".
The Cobbler I could have sworn this had already been released, but I guess I was wrong.

Andrew time travels 35 years back to revisit the theatrical release of the Buck Rogers In The 25th Century film...
Once synonymous with science fiction, the phrase ‘That Buck Rogers Stuff’ once called to mind everything the average person thought about Science Fiction - ray guns, rocket ships and robots. Certainly in the 1928, when the then-christened Anthony Rogers made his debut, he was something pretty unique in Sci-Fi - the space adventurer as swash-buckler. Given the nickname ‘Buck’ by John F. Dille, the novel, Armageddon, was adapted into the comic strips in 1929 and then in 1932, Buck Rogers became the first major Science Fiction radio drama. 1939 saw Larry ‘Buster’ Crabbe take on the role for a 12-part serial. All of this is to say that Buck Rogers was around for quite a while before many people of my generation discovered him.
Buck Rogers In The 25th Century arrived on UK shores via the medium of cinema.

Sad news today. Arlene Martel, a recognisable face to Star Trek, The Twilight Zone and Battlestar Galactica fans, has passed away at the age of 78.
The actress died from heart attack complications at a health centre on Tuesday, reports have said.
Martel was best known for playing a prospective bride to Leonard Nimoy’s Spock in the Star Trek episode Amok Time, an episode well-remembered for giving fans a rare glimpse at Vulcan and featuring a full-on fight between Kirk and Spock.
Fondly remembering his would-be on-screen wife’s acting skills, Leonard Nimoy took to Twitter: “Saying goodbye to T’Pring, Arlene Martel. A lovely talent,” he wrote.

Gillian Greene's TV star father had an adage about career arcs that was applicable to any actor: "Who's Lorne Greene?" "Get me Lorne Greene!" "Get me the next Lorne Greene!" "Who's the next Lorne Greene?" At the moment, the next Gillian Greene is Gillian Greene, whose first feature, "Murder of a Cat" premieres next week at the Tribeca Film Festival. The off-beat comedy stars Fran Kranz (Joss Whedon's "Much Ado About Nothing" and "The Cabin in the Woods") as a manchild with a proto-Bieber haircut, various delusions, and who lives at home with his mother (Blythe Danner). Just coincidentally, all of Greene's children, ages 7 to 20, live with their mother. "Yeah, people are surprised I have so many kids, but I started kind of young," said the fledgling director, whose father was a star of the longtime NBC western "Bonanza" and, later, the original "Battlestar Galactica" TV series. She met her husband,...

Syfy is returning to miniseries programming with Ascension, a six-hour program from Philip Levens.
Levens is no stranger to the science-fiction genre, having worked as a writer and producer on Smallville. The six-hour series will follow a community of men, women and children who were sent by the U.S. government in 1963 to travel to – and populate – a new world. The voyage is supposed to take 100 years, but 50 years into their trip, a young woman is mysteriously murdered. Following the murder, passengers question the true nature of their assignment, as they approach the point in their voyage of no return.
Ascension will be Syfy’s first mini-series since 2009’s Alice, and the network hopes that the six-hour event will lead to a potential spin-off series, similar to Battlestar Galactica. Executives also teased that Ascension will be a return to the more traditional science-fiction stories fans feel have been lacking in recent Syfy original programing.

Director: Jerusha Hess; Screenwriter: Jerusha Hess, Shannon Hale; Starring: Keri Russell, Jj Feild, Jennifer Coolidge, Bret McKenzie, Jane Seymour; Running time: 97 mins; Certificate: 12A
Keri Russell has been a shining light on TV thanks to Felicity and FX's The Americans, but she's never quite managed to catch fire on the big screen. Where Waitress should've provided her with a career springboard, it instead sent her into a series of thankless second-string wife or love interest parts. Russell's name sits above the title in new romantic comedy Austenland, but what a shame then that it's a huge waste of her considerable talents.
Based on Shannon Hale's chick lit novel, it follows an American singleton obsessed with all things Jane Austen who cobbles together her life savings to take a trip to an Austen-themed resort in the UK. Dress up, role play and comical British accents are the order of the...

Syfy is working on a small screen version of Terry Gilliam's 1995 time-travel sci-fi, 12 Monkeys...
"It's a return to our roots in terms of science fiction: cool, interesting push-the-genre science fiction" Mark Stern, Head of Original Programming at Syfy
Cool, original, and push-the-genre is just how we like our science fiction, so Mark Stern's recent words at this weekend's Sdcc are like John Williams music to our alien robot ears. His most recently announced project - a TV adaptation of Terry Gilliam's 1995 12 Monkeys - promises to tick at least two of those boxes (and potentially a third depending on your view on what makes something original).
Syfy's rebooted Battlestar Galactica is very much the template for this new project, which is currently being planned to start with a ninety-minute pilot before talk of a full season order. Producers of the original film,...

Scream Factory brings us 1985's space vampire flick Lifeforce to Blu-ray for the first time ever. Although Tobe Hooper's blend of sci-fi and horror didn't fare well at the box office when first released, it's gained a cult following over the years thanks to video and DVD. Lifeforce Collector's Edition includes both the theatrical cut and a longer director approved version.
An alien spacecraft is discovered in the midst of Halley's Comet by astronauts sent to investigate. Upon entering the ship, they find three humanoids which are in a type of sleep state. They bring the bodies aboard their vessel and discover too quickly that was a mistake. The aliens take over the Earthbound craft by killing everyone on board. Led by their seductively beautiful leader, they arrive on Earth and begin draining the life out of everyone they encounter.

And just like that, it was Sunday, the final day of the con.
I suspect I wasn’t the only one there, who, by the end, almost felt as if they were going through the motions, that feeling of Con fatigue in full effect. My feet hurt, the spectrum of colors blur, comic companies meld, and the idea of sitting down at panels regain its appeal.
Even the atmosphere felt a tad muted, the costumes a bit less ubiquitous and clever, but the throng of fans still thundered along the show floor, squeezing through doors and escalators to get to panels on time or to see their favorite comic book artist.
This afternoon, I spent more time at comic book panels, seeing just one celebrity to finish off the Con.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre DVD releases for the month of January.
Lightning Bug (2004) Image Entertainment Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Effects guru Robert Hall’s semi-autobiographical film about a small town teen (Reaper's Bret Harrison) who has aspirations to become a special effects artist. An opportunity to manage the town’s local haunted house is thwarted by his alcoholic stepfather and the staunchly religious views of the surrounding population. The solid supporting cast includes That 70’s Show’s Laura Prepon, Hellraiser’s Ashely Lawrence and Kevin Gage. Written and directed by Hall, it’s an affectionate coming-of-age drama that works in spite of an uneven narrative that falls apart in the final half hour. Hopefully this new extended cut will remedy the scripting problems of the original release.
Special Features include:
* Never-before-released extended cut of the film.
* Making-of Featurette
* Audio commentaries with the writer/director and cast.

From spaceman to Faceman, Dirk Benedict has become one of television's top icons.
Viewers sat riveted week-after-week as Lieutenant Starbuck hurtled through the stars in Battlestar Galactica and Templeton 'Faceman' Peck fought his way from one mission to the next on The A-Team.
Now his adventures will continue - more along the lines of his Starbuck days - in the new comic book Dirk Benedict in the 25th Century.
The story sees Dirk signing autographs at a convention when a mysterious scientist appears, transporting him to Earth's far-flung future, where he discovers he is mankind's only hope against an oppressive computer and its robot army.
"I have been on Broadway, in the movies and on TV, but being Dirk Benedict in the 25th Century beats them all," said Dirk. "Not only will I be forever young - without surgery - but I can smoke my beloved fumerellos, un-heckled, throughout the universe.

Check out this fantastic piece of rare poster art created by legendary artist Ralph McQuarrie for the 1979 theatrical release of the pilot of the original Battlestar Galactica TV series. I'd love to own a print of this poster art, it's just so cool!
Universal Studios edited the original pilot down from its three hour running time so they could release it in theaters to try and recoup some of the high production costs of making the series. I would have loved to see this up on the big screen!
Originally named Saga of a Star World, the pilot sets up the backstory of the 1,000 year war between a colony of humans living in a distant cosmos and the robotic race known as Cylons, who wish to wipe out the entire human race. The humans are betrayed by a traitor known as...
