Given her one-of-a-kind awards resume and irrefutable status as an acting legend, it’s no wonder Meryl Streep is widely expected to be honored at this year’s Emmys for her work on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” Taking the gold for her first regular comedy series role would be impressive enough, but the noteworthiness of her win would extend far beyond that. Having joined her show in its third season, she would be only the 10th non-original comedy series cast member to ever pull off a lead or supporting Emmy victory.
Not including sketch performers, Streep would be said winners club’s first new entrant in over three decades. The last was Kirstie Alley, who replaced Shelley Long as the female lead of “Cheers” at the start of season six and prevailed on her third Emmy bid in 1991. That same year, supporting “Cheers” actress Bebe Neuwirth achieved...

Annette Insdorf is synonymous with Columbia University, at which she has been a film professor since 1987 and served as director of undergraduate film studies for decades. A former translator for François Truffaut, she is also the longtime moderator of the 92nd Street Y’s “Reel Pieces” series, the author of numerous important books on film (most notably Indelible Shadows: Film and Holocaust) and a regular presence at film festivals like Cannes and Telluride.
Insdorf agreed to share with The Hollywood Reporter her perspective about recent unrest on Columbia’s campus over the Israel-Gaza conflict, which in the last 24 hours resulted in the NYPD raiding Hamilton Hall (which had been occupied by pro-Palestinian protesters), resulting in many arrests.

Before you make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, take a look through our photo gallery featuring the ladies most likely to land in the lineup. Since last year’s winner – Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) – is now campaigning as a lead, this race is wide open to an array of possible newcomers, past contenders, and even a few former winners.
At this point, the clear frontrunner is potential category first-timer Meryl Streep (“Only Murders in the Building”), who previously achieved two Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress wins for “Holocaust” (1978) and “Angels in America” (2004). Hoping to challenge her are three of Edebiri’s “The Bear” cast mates: Liza Colon-Zayas, Abby Elliott, and Molly Gordon.
Of Edebiri’s six 2023 competitors, only two – “Abbott Elementary” pair Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph – are involved in the current race. Ralph took this prize for the same series in 2022, defeating Hannah Einbinder...

That Time Meryl Streep Was Motivated By Money To Take A TV Role For The Sake Of The Love Of Her Life
Hollywood is not the place you think of first when it comes to stories of true love or long-lasting romantic relationships. But just like in her professional life, famed thespian Meryl Streep bucked the trend with her real-life relationship with the late actor John Cazale. The relationship even made the fastidious Streep break her own rule of doing a role purely for the sake of money.
When Meryl Streep Met John Cazale

Cazale was a rising star in Hollywood when he first made Streep’s acquaintance thanks to their joint work in a 1976 stage production of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. Streep was in her 20s, while Cazale was 14 years older and making a name for himself with prominent roles in The Godfather and its sequel, The Conversation, and Dog Day Afternoon.

If the most terrifying horror monsters are the ones that most reflect real-life terror, then cinematic cannibals might be the most terrifying monsters of all. Unlike vampires, werewolves, or ghosts, cannibals on film are fully flesh-and-blood humans — just with a taste for the flesh and blood of other humans. The garishness of the act makes cannibalism a perfect subject for shock horror, and the cannibal film fully came alive in the ’70s and ’80s via low-budget splatter triumphs like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Cannibal Holocaust,” which pitted their protagonists against horrific waves of flesh eaters.
In recent years, cannibalism has had a bit of a “moment” — on film, at least. As The New York Times pointed out in 2022, a wave of movies, TV shows, and books exploring cannibalism has emerged in popular culture, from “Yellowjackets” to “Bones and All” to “Fresh.” Many of these projects use the practice as...

Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi achieved notoriety in 1962 with the sensationalistic documentary Mondo Cane, a globetrotting exposé of bizarre rites and other human grotesqueries that opened the floodgates for a deluge of Mondo titles. When the release of their 1966 film Africa Addio (a.k.a. Africa: Blood and Guts), a despairing look at the continent’s decolonization movements, led to accusations of racism, Jacopetti and Prosperi sought to address the charges by revealing (some would say reveling in) the history of slavery in America. The resulting film, Goodbye Uncle Tom, is an extremely disturbing, at times almost unwatchable, descent into the inferno of an unpardonable institution.
Goodbye Uncle Tom leaves any pretense of objectivity behind in the dust. Using a conceit similar to such Peter Watkins classics as Culloden and The War Game, Jacopetti and Prosperi’s film brings modern-day documentary technology back into a historical setting, using it in...

The wrestling drama The Iron Claw has quietly grossed $31.5 million domestically at the box office since its Christmas launch, a veritable fortune for an independent film in the post-pandemic age and one of the best showings ever for distributor A24. And it isn’t the only specialty movie doing impressive business these days thanks to a powerful new ally: younger adults.
For years, art house movies relied on the “elderverse,” as one indie executive puts it — i.e., moviegoers over age 35 or 40. But that relationship collapsed during the Covid-19 crisis and has yet to be fully restored. At the same time, the 18-to-34 crowd started snubbing once-surefire genres like superhero fare and began venturing beyond their comfort zone. “Also, people are realizing that streaming is leveling off. There’s less good content to watch at home,” adds Neon distribution chief Elissa Federoff.

Developer Fantastico Studio has finalized their plans for the upcoming closed beta for Cannibal Tales, announcing that the beta will kick off on October 31. The team also dropped a bit more info on the beta, as well as revealed a new art piece involving the game’s antagonist.
The closed beta (which you can sign up for via the Cannibal Tales official site) will take place from October 31, and last until November 7th. This will be different from the public demo that was available this summer, and will give players access to the first two chapters of the game, totaling around 30 minutes of gameplay. Upon completing the demo, there will be a survey asking for player feedback.
This all ties into Fantastico’s aim to have the game out in February 2024. According to the announcement, development is in the “home stretch”, with the final two scenes, save functionality, options, and localization remaining.

Music Box Films has acquired the US distribution rights to “The Crime is Mine” (“Mon Crime”). François Ozon directs the comedy of errors starring newcomers Rebecca Marder and Nadia Terezkiewicz, alongside Isabelle Huppert, Fabrice Luchini, Dany Boon, and André Dussolier.
Music Box is aiming for a theatrical release later this year with a home video release to follow.
The picture, based on George Berr and Louis Verneuil’s 1934 play, concerns a struggling actress (Terezkiewicz) and her roommate (Marder), an unemployed attorney in 1930’s Paris. Madeleine ends up on trial for the murder of a movie producer, while Pauline serves as both defense counsel and media circus ringmaster to both of their mutual benefit. Their post-acquittal life of fame, fortune and glory is eventually undercut by certain revelations.
“The Crime is Mine” marks Music Box Films’ fifth collaboration with director Ozon, following “Potiche,” “Frantz,” “By the Grace of God” and “Summer of 85.

Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, went through three months of rehearsals for the part, which included learning to ride horses, work with dogs, scuba dive, row and operate a horse carriage. “I’ve never done so much training in my life,” says the 27-year-old London native, whose credits include 2019’s A Dog’s Way Home and the BBC drama World on Fire.
Hauer-King first tried out for The Little Mermaid as a “fun experience,” thinking it would never go anywhere. Seven months of auditions ensued, which included an Ariel-esque moment of losing his voice the day before he was asked to sing in front of director Rob Marshall (he met with Marshall a few weeks later to try again). The actor also screen-tested alongside star Halle Bailey, eventually landing a role that Harry Styles also was up for (“He’s pretty cool and amazingly talented,...

Sylvester Stallone’s first regular television series role on the Paramount+ mob-themed series “Tulsa King” has put him in this year’s Emmy race. And while it’s not rare for a performer primarily or solely identified with features to find Emmy success, it’s significantly less common for them to generate it in a comedy category, where Stallone presently finds himself in 10th place among series leads in the Gold Derby combined count.
A longshot? Absolutely. But there is certainly plenty of precedent for movie stars shuttling to TV and earning Emmy recognition. Here are 10 examples:
Al Pacino – He won lead actor in a miniseries or movie statues for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in “Angels in America” (2004) and Dr. Jack Kevorkian in “You Don’t Know Jack” (2010). That’s double his number of Oscar wins, Pacino’s lone triumph being for “Scent of a Woman” in 1993. Meryl Streep – Streep...

It’s a well-known fact that Meryl Streep is the most Oscar-nominated actor of all time, with 21 bids (and three wins) dating as far back as 1978. What many may not realize, however, is that her storied history with the film academy began after she had already clinched an Emmy for her lead performance on the NBC miniseries “Holocaust.” Indeed, she has won as many Emmys as she has Oscars, and she could soon nab at least a fourth TV trophy since her upcoming projects include Apple TV+’s “Extrapolations” and Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.”
Before she received her first Emmy, Streep made her small screen debut opposite John Lithgow in a 1977 installment of PBS’s “Great Performances,” entitled “Secret Service.” This was essentially a filmed stage play presented as a two-hour movie. Her first proper telefilm was “The Deadliest Season,” in which she portrayed the wife of...

Evan Peters and his “Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” dad Richard Jenkins are the odds-on favorites to take home the Emmys for Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Supporting Actor, respectively. They’re already Emmy winners in the opposite categories, and if they prevail in September, they’ll join a small group of men who’ve won both limited/TV movie acting prizes.
Just six actors have swept both categories, which have undergone various name changes over the years. Laurence Olivier reigns supreme with five trophies total. He has four in lead for “The Moon and Sixpence” (1960), “Long Day’s Journey into Night” (1973), “Love Among the Ruins” (1975) and “King Lear” (1984), and one in supporting for “Brideshead Revisited” (1982).
Michael Moriarty has four, but they come with an asterisk. He owns lead and supporting statuettes for “Holocaust” (1978) and “James Dean” (2002), respectively, and won two Emmys...

Although some of the most famous works about the Holocaust appear in other media — “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,” for example, among books and Steven Spielberg‘s “Schindler’s List” in films — television is the medium that has brought the horror of the Nazis’ murder of six million Jews to the most people around the world. The importance of shining a light on the evil plan behind the Holocaust may be even more crucial today, as the Nazi agenda of white supremacy has made an unfortunate return in these times, once again rising (and even flourishing) in countries around the world.
Even taking on a subject as horrifyingly specific as the Holocaust, television has responded by telling the story in many different ways — through epic miniseries, dramas about Jewish prisoners, adventures of both rescuers and rebels and even a look into the Nazi psyche itself (“Conspiracy”).

The most fun moments of watching the Oscars are always the surprises.
The unexpected wins from dark horses are always so much more thrilling than predictable outcomes.
It's not that the winners were undeserving -- it's often that their wins seemed to come out of nowhere.
With prognosticators having Oscar predictions down to a science, anything remotely surprising is a rare treat.
Here are some of the most shocking wins that left us with our jaws on the floor!
Adrien Brody (Best Actor In A Leading Role) in The Pianist
Brody was the only Oscar-less member of his cohort when he won for his role as Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman.
Up against Jack Nicholson, Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, and Daniel Day-Lewis, Brody's win made him the youngest Best Actor in the history of the Oscars, at age 29.

Meryl Streep has joined the Season 3 cast of “Only Murders in the Building” at Hulu.
The announcement was made by series star Selena Gomez in a video posted to Instagram, which can be seen below. It is not yet known whether Streep will appear in a guest, recurring or series regular capacity.
The comedy-drama series follows Charles-Haden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), neighbors at an Upper West Side building called the Arconia, who bond over a love of true crime podcasts and end up starting their own as mysterious murders happen around them. In Season 1, they uncovered the killing of their fellow resident Tim Kono (Julian Cihi), and in Season 2 they did the same for the building’s board president Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) — while trying to clear their own names. Tina Fey also stars.

This year brought several WWII documentaries that took their inspiration from images in old footage, including “Three Minutes: A Lengthening” and “From Where They Stood.” The latest of these, Magnus Gertten’s “Nelly & Nadine,” makes outstanding use of this compelling approach.
Gertten has actually already employed this method, with his 2015 film “Every Face Has a Name.” His intention then was to identify as many people as possible in footage of survivors who arrived in Sweden on April 28, 1945. One of them was Nadine Hwang, though nothing else was known about her. During a screening of the film, Gertten was approached by a French farmer named Sylvie Bianchi, who told him that Hwang was her grandmother’s secret lover.
The story only gets more astonishing from there. Bianchi’s grandmother, Nelly, was once a celebrated Belgian singer who worked as a member of the Resistance. She was arrested by the Gestapo in...

There’s no getting around it: talking about representation in movies these days is a sticky, tricky subject. There are many examples of what Sarah Silverman called “Jewface” on her podcast last year.

Ruggero Deodato's 1980 gore flick "Cannibal Holocaust" is one of those rare films that does not lose power with age. Its extreme gore and rough, vérité style are so incredibly raw it landed Deodato in court under the suspicion that he had made a genuine snuff film. This had been compounded by how the cast had — as a bit of a marketing stunt — signed contracts not to conduct any promotional interviews. It wasn't until Deodato was able to produce the "missing" cast members in court that he was exonerated. It's worth noting that "Holocaust" still contains documentary footage of animals being killed, so it's still a difficult sit. Indeed, "Holocaust" went on to be censored in many countries. To this day, it is held up as a gold standard of extreme horror cinema.

History was made at the 2004 Emmys when “Angels in America” won all seven major awards for which it was eligible, becoming the first limited series to do so. Included in its haul were two lead acting trophies for Meryl Streep and Al Pacino as well as a pair of supporting ones for Mary-Louise Parker and Jeffrey Wright. Streep already had an Emmy to her name for “Holocaust” (1978) and Parker had previously been nominated for “The West Wing,” but the two men had never been recognized by the TV academy before.
Wright’s main “Angels in America” role was that of a wise and weary nurse named Belize, but he also filled in as mysterious inveigler Mr. Lies and as an angelic council member representing Europa. At 38, he was initially the eighth youngest man to ever bring home the gold in his category and now sits in 10th place.

Before he earned four Best Drama Actor Emmy bids as one of the six original main cast members of NBC’s “Law & Order,” Michael Moriarty made history as the youngest conqueror of both TV Movie/Limited Series male acting categories. His first win for his supporting turn in “The Glass Menagerie” (1974) was followed four years later by a victory for his lead role on the NBC limited series “Holocaust.” Broadcast over a four-day period in April 1978, the series was met with both criticism and praise, with much of the adulation directed toward Moriarty and his castmates.
“Holocaust” was awarded a total of eight Emmys from 15 nominations, including Best Limited Series and Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actress (Meryl Streep). Moriarty was honored for his role as a 1930s German lawyer who joins the Nazi party out of economic desperation and grapples with the consequences of his decision over the course of several years.

David Warner, the English actor who gave memorable performances on the big screen, in a key role in “The Omen,” and as villains in “Time After Time,” “Time Bandits” and “Tron,” has died. He was 80.
The actor died of a cancer-related illness on Sunday in London, his family told the BBC. “Over the past 18 months he approached his diagnosis with a characteristic grace and dignity,” his family said in a statement shared with the public broadcaster.
“He will be missed hugely by us, his family and friends, and remembered as a kind-hearted, generous and compassionate man, partner and father, whose legacy of extraordinary work has touched the lives of so many over the years. We are heartbroken,” the statement continued.

In the lead-up to this year’s Emmy nominations, most pundits expected the HBO anthology series “The White Lotus” to pick up multiple acting bids, but almost none were bold enough to predict its eventual haul of eight. Nearly every member of the first season’s ensemble cast has a shot at the gold, with Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy, and Steve Zahn competing in the Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor category and Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, and Sydney Sweeney taking up all but two spots in the corresponding female lineup.
Although 15 other limited programs have amassed at least three featured male notices apiece, “The White Lotus” is the first to net more than three supporting actress bids. Furthermore, it stands as one of only three live action shows of any genre to receive five same-year nominations in a single primetime acting category. This is...

There are many films that have been made about the Holocaust, which to some may feel repetitive but ultimately represents a positive testament to the millions of people who lost their lives and whose fates, while assumed, may still not be entirely known. Invented characters can be useful to convey the experiences of the nameless within an enormous population that did not live to see its own story told. Hungary last won the Oscar for Best Foreign Film for the Holocaust movie Son of Saul (2015), and now it could be in the running again for a smaller-scale Holocaust film Those Who Remained, which unexpectedly made the shortlist of ten films that are vying for the five nominations on Monday.
In this quiet, intimate drama, Klára (Abigél Szõke) clings to the hope that her parents may still be alive as she tries to conduct a normal life with her remaining local relative,...

Ricky Gervais is under fire for what some consider to be transphobic tweets, just weeks before he is set to host the Golden Globe Awards for the fifth time.
On Friday, Gervais, 58, responded to a tweet regarding Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling‘s support of a British researcher who was fired after expressing anti-transgender sentiments. (Rowling faced backlash after tweeting her support of Maya Forstater on Thursday after Forstater lost a court hearing challenging her termination from the Centre for Global Development.)
The tweet that Gervais replied to contained a link to a satirical article that was written from the “perspective” of a transgender woman.

Ricky Gervais has posted a series of seemingly transphobic tweets prompted by J.K. Rowling’s support of Maya Forstater, a researcher who was fired for tweeting that a person cannot change their biological sex. In later tweets, Gervais implied the tweets were meant as jokes.
In the first tweet, Gervais, who has been tapped to host the Golden Globes, responded to a tweet from the satire account @JarvisDupont that linked to an article in Spectator USA, a news website from British conservative weekly mag The Spectator, once edited by current Pm Boris Johnson. The article was mockingly written as though from the perspective of a trans woman angry over Rowling’s comments.
“Those awful biological women can never understand what it must be like for you becoming a lovely lady so late in life,” Gervais wrote. “They take their girly privileges for granted. Winning at female sports and having their own toilets.
