Some things never go out of style, and Dracula is one of them. Bram Stoker’s novel helped to fully define the vampire in the cultural consciousness. Almost 130 years since its publication, it remains hugely popular, with the new horror comedy Renfield giving the one and only Nicolas Cage a chance to don the cape.
The vampiric character is the most adapted in film and television history aside from Sherlock Holmes, so we have a full century of bloodsucking variety to revel in. There are the classics, of course, from Bela Lugosi to Gary Oldman in Francis Ford Coppola’s famous interpretation. But then there are the adaptations that make us wonder what the director was going through when they made it. You can do basically anything with vampires and it’ll make sense, but these Dracula revamps seriously test that.

BET is closing out the summer with a block of original feature films, including the Taryn Manning lightning rod “Karen.”
Titled “Summer of Chills,” the slate of suspense thrillers includes three BET original movies and the linear debut of two titles from streaming service BET Plus.
Stars including Paula Patton, Lauren London, LisaRaye McCoy, Loretta Devine, Wood Harris, V. Bozeman, Columbus Short, Deborah Cox, Anthony Hamilton and Ledisi.
“Karen,” a suspense thriller about an entitled and twisted racist woman who comes undone after a Black couple moves into the McMansion next door, will air on Sept. 14. An early look at the title, a pejorative term for toxic white women who’d like to speak to the manager, caused a stir on social media and drew comparisons to Jordan Peele’s “Get Out.”
Cory Hardrict and Jasmine Burke play the couple attempting to assimilate into their new neighborhood, thwarted by microaggressions...

Joan Crawford would’ve celebrated her 114th birthday on March 23, 2020. Though she’s probably best remembered for the portrayals of her by other actresses, the Oscar-winning performer starred in a number of classics before her death in 1977 at the age of 71. In honor of her birthday, let’s take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1906, Crawford made her debut as a body double for Norma Shearer in “Ladies of the Night” (1925). She worked her way up into starring roles in several MGM titles, most notably the ensemble drama “Grand Hotel” (1932). Yet a dip in audience enthusiasm led to her being labeled “box office poison,” which would haunt her for several years.
Crawford moved to Warner Bros. in 1943, and just two years later, she was re-igniting the box office and scooping up a Best Actress Oscar for “Mildred Pierce” (1945). The role of an...

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Drive-In Collection: Death Force / Vampire Hookers In Death Force, Doug Russell (James Iglehart) is a soldier on the way home to his wife and infant son, but when he runs afoul of two supposed friends he’s left for dead in the middle of the ocean. Luckily he washes up on an island beach where he’s found, nursed back to health, and trained in the way of the samurai by two Japanese soldiers unaware that their war (WWII) ended years prior. Vampire Hookers doesn’t really need a synopsis, does it? Vinegar Syndrome’s latest double feature of obscure drive-in favorites is one of the good ones thanks mostly to the first feature. At its core it’s a revenge flick, but the story touches and fight choreography make it a surprisingly good time...

Around these parts if we had to pick what amounted to a hell of a decade for horror movies, it'd be easy to say that the Seventies were up there. Boundaries were pushed as well as the limits of what some would call good taste. Now two of that decade's weirdest films are back from the grave!

I don’t recall having ever even heard of the 1978 horror comedy Vampire Hookers until seeing it mentioned in the awesome Filipino B-movie documentary Machete Maidens Unleashed. Something tells me Vampire Hookers cannot possibly be as amusing as its campy theme song.
While this T&A slapstick horror comedy starring John Carradine and Bruce Fairbairn about vampire hookers from the late B-movie maestro Cirio H. Santiago has somehow managed to escape my gaze over the years, the campy late-Seventies folk rock theme song that tells the story of this wacky slice of Filipinosploitation did not escape my ears. When your movie’s theme song contains lyrics along the lines of “Well, they’re vampire hookers, and blood is not all that they suck”, nothing else really needs to be said.
Direct from the credits of the motion picture of the same name, here’s the theme song to Vampire Hookers...
