Treat yourself to some science fiction reading, with a bunch of recommend reads from the 1970s...
So many types of science fiction exist, and British Sf writing in the 1970s was often in the business of inventing new types or manipulating the old ones into interesting directions. Astonishing visions were created that reflected back on a changing world where the growth of superpowers jostled with the economic hardships at home. Were we heading in the right direction, as a species? What did it mean to be human, anyway, caught in an explosion of scientific and technological advances?
Some writers gave us space-travelling escapism, and some gave us nightmare thrillers at home. Some gave us alien intelligences and some gave us human stupidities. From the foreseeable future to the end of the universe, here’s a look at eleven incredible British science fiction novels of the 1970s:

The War On Terror meets The Final Frontier and asks the most important question of all time. What does God need with a starship?
Shatner fights God. That’s about all anyone remembers from the infamous Final Frontier. Over the years, the tale has grown in the telling. Some called it one of the worst films of all time, others call it a box office catastrophe. It killed the careers of the director, producer, the entire special effects company, and nearly ended the entire franchise right there and then. It is remembered merely as a vanity project gone horribly wrong.
But ask yourself this. What does God need with a starship? Can you answer it? Can you understand the question? To dismiss it out of hand is to dismiss the opportunity to think. Do not turn your brain off.
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is the ultimate question.

Indigenous woman Marlene Cummins breaks a 40 year silence to tell the story of her abuse in the Australian Black protest movement in the documentary Black Panther Woman, which premieres on Sbs on November 1. Produced by Blackfella Films (First Contact; Redfern Now) and directed by Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Dae; Mabo), the film recouints Cummins. journey which began in 1972 when she fell in love with the leader of the Australian Black Panther Party, Denis Walker.. The little known Brisbane chapter of the Black Panther Party was inspired by the American Panthers. They adapted their politics, militant black leather outfits and defiant attitude. Like their American comrades, they also raised the attention of the police and Asio. Yet the Australian chapter had just 10 members. In one year, this group of young Aboriginal people staged educational theatre shows, kept watch on the police with .pig patrols. and were at the forefront of demonstrations including the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.

From Star Trek: Generations through to Star Trek: Nemesis - here are 47 nerdy spots in the Next Generation films...
Since Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979, the Star Trek cinematic outings have proved to be a smorgasbord of references and famous actors (or those who would go on to be), and often had complex behind the scenes events that stopped some rather, ahem, fascinating moments making it to the final version. We found lots of nerdy spots in the first six films here.
This time out we look at the films featuring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and choose 47 factoids. Granted, there's a lot more than that of interest, but we've tried for ones that you might not be aware of.
Oh, and there are some major spoilers...

In Shops This Week:
Pisces #1
Writer: Kurtis J. Wiebe
Artist: Johnnie Christmas
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain
Publisher: Shadowline/Image Comics
Price: $3.50
Description: Former fighter pilot Dillon Carpenter found everything he wanted when he returned from the Vietnam War. A loving partner; a dream career training with Nasa to travel through space; and soon, he will learn, a prime candidacy for a secret mission, one that will forever change the world: First Contact. But as Dillon prepares, his war trauma returns and he’s haunted by dark visions of his future. There is but one constant; the voice whispering from the stars.
Our Take: Kurtis J. Wiebe is a big name right now and for good reason; his Rat Queens comic is a cutthroat satire that takes aim at the medieval fantasy genre but has the heart to be a truly enjoyable comic as well (as I said back in 2013), and his...

A few words on the life, books and humanity of Sir Terry Pratchett - a man who was a cast iron example of how to be a human being.
The first Terry Pratchett book I read was Truckers. The first Terry Pratchett book I heard was Only You Can Save Mankind, which we'd got out from the library a few months earlier to listen to in the car. The reason I got these books was simply because I had seen my Dad sitting reading Soul Music on holiday, laughing his head off, and I wanted in.
So, first of all, thank you very much Terry Pratchett for saving me having to think of a Christmas gift every year. That sounds glib, and lazy, but every year you could be assured of buying something that he was guaranteed to enjoy. It's easy to take that for granted, but it's a gift in itself,...

A somewhat flummoxed John Godfrey took a grilling from .mystery. interviewer Tony Jackson during the session .Sbs in the Spotlight. held at Net-Work-Play on Tuesday. Godfrey, Head of Documentary at Sbs, opened the session stating .We had a few complaints last year from producers saying that we give the same presentation every year and that our message is always the same. .Tony was one of those who complained the loudest. So, basically, I said .Alright, you interview us, you make it fun. So if this is really tedious you know who to blame... Jackson was listed as a mystery interviewer in the Aidc program. Having worked in factual television for 25 years and now with his own company, Chemical Media Productions, Jackson took the opportunity to ask Godfrey and members of the Sbs commissioning team some hard-hitting questions, as well as accuse Godfrey of being allergic to anything he or his company pitched.

The Visit introduces itself via title card as “a simulation.” While its central scenario is fake, all of the people interviewed within the film are real and speaking from legitimate expertise — which the title cards also make sure to point out. It’s been a while since a movie made such a succinct statement on how a documentary can be considered a documentary while being “fake.” The scenario in question is first contact between humanity and an alien visitor. Officials from different organizations and think tanks concerned with extraterrestrial relations go over how governments and citizens might react to such an event. It’s surprising to discover how many people are involved in this field. There’s a lawyer who specializes in “space law and metalaw” and a theologian who acts as an ethics adviser to the French Space Agency, among other unusual professionals. The audience is placed in the Pov of this visitor, with...

Just yesterday we showed you some awesome fan art that that gave us a look at what the unreleased trailer for Warcraft that was shown at BlizzCon 2014 looked like. In case you missed that, you should click here to check it out. The film is currently going through the post-production process, and there are a ton of visual effects that need to be completed before the movie is released in 2016.
The director of the film, Duncan Jones, recently talked about the highly anticipated movie, and reveals that the focus of the movie will be on orcs and humans meeting for the first time.
This is what he had to say in an interview the Chinese movie news site Mtime (via: frakingfilms):
“From the moment I first talked to Blizzard, the plan was to start our film with the first time Orcs met Humans. First contact!

Though a lengthy post-production process remains, principal photography on Warcraft is complete, and director Duncan Jones (Moon) has been discussing the project with Chinese movie news website Mtime. ManMadeMovies published a translation, revealing the long-term hopes Jones has for the game adaptation.
“Peter Jackson did a magnificent job of ‘setting the table’ for Tolkien’s universe with his first Lord Of The Rings film. I know that my job in this first film is to establish certain characters, places and culture while telling a story that a broad audience can be excited by. Hopefully, if I have done my job right, people will want to know and see more! There is certainly plenty more to tell… I would love to be part of that process of expanding on the lore that makes up Warcraft, but it will depend on what you, the audience, think of our first film.”

Duncan Jones's big-screen take on the insanely addictive Mmorpg "Warcraft" won't be out until 2016, and details so far have been fairly scarce. Maybe that's because the release date is over a year away! In any case, the "Moon" director has shared some information about the movie's plot with the Chinese news site Mtime, and it sounds pretty cool so far. Thanks much to diehard fansite ManMadeMovies for making the translation available!
Jones said, "As you may know, there has been a long history of trying to make a 'Warcraft' film, and for a number of reasons, it never quite happened. I was lucky. When I went to talk to Chris Metzen and the guys at Blizzard, we both saw things the same way. A 'Warcraft' film should not be about a good race of humans battling an evil race of orcs! Even though the calendar has reached 2015, we still have more a year to go before Duncan Jones unleashes his Warcraft film on the world. Recently, he let slip some details about the characters for the game adaptation, and has now talked to Chinese news site Mtime (with a helpful translation via Man Made Movies) about his aims for the film’s tone and story.According to the director, he was looking to explore the initial meetings between orcs and humans that led to the big conflict. “From the moment I first talked to Blizzard, the plan was to start our film with the first time Orcs met Humans,” he says. “First contact! I think that for a world with so much newness to explain, this was a wise choice, especially when so many people in our audience may not know anything about Warcraft... We're still some time away from "Warcraft," Duncan Jones' film adaptation of the popular "World of Warcraft" online video game franchise for Legendary Pictures. With the project still very much in post-production, the "Moon" and "Source Code" helmer recently took some time out to speak a bit about the film and how it will split the focus between humans and orcs.
Speaking with Chinese news site MTime (via Mmm), Jones says that dual focus is key to making the property work:
“A Warcraft film should not be about a good race of humans battling an evil race of orcs! Warcraft should be about heroes on both sides trying to avoid a conflict, when villains leave them no choice.”
He indicates the film opens with the 'first contact' meeting between the two races, which gives an entry point to those unfamiliar with the franchise:

Everybody has that one movie that they've watched so many times, "knowing it by heart" doesn't even begin to describe the relationship. It's the film that you drop everything to watch when it comes on TV, or that you bought and wore out the VHS copy, and then the DVD and the Blu-Ray... and you're still happy to watch it again on Netflix. Maybe it all started with what your family liked to watch (or what they hated) or what ended up in your stocking at holiday time, or what you fell in love with at the theater. Below, the HitFix editorial staff shares its most-watched movies of all time. What is yours? Tell us in the comments! Donna Dickens "Titanic" I was that fourteen year old girl. Microsoft will provide gamers with a bevy of creative toolsets this October, when Project Spark, its game-building title, officially hits stores. The game — which is currently available in beta form — will officially release on October 7 in North America, October 9 in the Asia-Pacific region and October 10 in Europe, and will be available in both physical and digital variations.
After having done away with the game’s original microtransaction system following beta users’ complaints, Project Spark‘s developers are excited about getting their vision into creative gamers’ hands. In fact, they’ve even sweetened the pot, by offering those who purchase the game’s $40 Xbox One Starter Pack an impressive amount of bonus content. Said list includes:

In today's world of studio movie making, let's face it, it's all about franchising. It's all about the sequels. In fact, this weekend we have two sequels hitting theaters in 22 Jump Street and How to Train Your Dragon 2. The first is a comedy sequel and it's receiving great reviews, despite the fact comedies rarely have good sequels. The second has the potential to be one of the biggest movies of the summer and perhaps the biggest animated movie of 2014. Whyc Sequels sell and if they're good they sell even more. That said, last week I started considering the sequels that were actually better than the original film in any given franchise. This isn't a question of what are the best sequelsc (I've already made that list.) Instead, what sequels managed to exceed the quality and entertainment of the film(s) that came before them. In this sense I have...

This weekend sees the latest entry in the franchise that started it all: the big budget superhero movie block buster. Or more specifically, the Marvel superhero movie blockbuster. Long ago DC comics (now part of Warner Brothers) had big hits in 1978 with Superman, The Movie and again in 1989 with Batman. Those flicks spawned sequels, but their success never expanded past those characters or to DC’s competitor, Marvel . After scoring a modest hit with 1998′s Blade, the Marvel superheroes really arrived at the multiplexes with 2000′s X-men. Spider-man swung onto movie screens in 2002, and Marvel began its own studio in 2008 with the first Iron Man. Tickets sales haven’t really subsided since and so now we have a new feature based on an early 1980′s comics storyline, X-men: Days Of Future Past, the first mutant movie, not counting last Summer’s solo spin-off The Wolverine, since 2011′s X-men: First Class.

Set 500 years into the future, 'Idiocracy' on a superficial level has absolutely nothing in common with Joss Whedon's space western cult classic 'Firefly.' And the implication otherwise is downright insulting. But scratch just beneath the surface and suddenly these two opposing ideologies of the future merge into one cohesive universe. Let's look at the facts. Fact: 'Idiocracy' and 'Firefly' take place at the same time. Private Joe Bauers (Luke Wilson) and Rita (Maya Rudolph) are sent into hibernation in the year 2006 and they wake up 500 years later, setting the date at 2506. The Battle of Serenity Valley, in which Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillon) and the Browncoats lost their bid for independence from the Core Worlds happened in May of 2511. “So what”, you say, sharpening your authentic reproduction of River Tam’s axe and sword, hate in your eyes. “If anything, that proves they couldn't be in the same...

Of all the races seen in the vast Star Trek galaxy, Vulcans are perhaps the most recognised. Loved even to the point where audiences cheered when First Contact’s oft-mentioned “alien race” revealed their legendary pointed ears and were the first to introduce Zefram Cochrane, and all of humanity, to our galactic neighbours. Despite being recognised for several reasons however, it has to be said that almost all of these (perhaps not the pointy ears) are accompanied by misconceptions.
Whilst the nerve-pinch is a firm favourite for example, the death-grip is in fact made up. Vulcans are also well known for not having emotions, whilst in actuality they possess those that are far more intense than others, but which they choose to suppress. Again, just as Spock is only half Vulcan, it would also seem that on many occasions the Vulcan race is only half logical; the number of...

Mass Effect 4
Industry insider Ahsan Rasheed suggests the fourth film in the "Mass Effect" game series will not go by a number. Instead it could be "Mass Effect: Contact".
This suggests a prequel set around the First Contact War - a three-month conflict between the human Systems Alliance and the Turian Hierarchy. The fallout from which included the ultimate formation of Cerberus. [Source: DualShockers]

Titan Books is releasing Tim Lebbon's Alien: Out of the Shadows, an official Alien novel and Book #1 in a trilogy, tomorrow, January 28th; and in honor of the occasion the author has provided us with his "Top Ten Alien Moments."
I'm a lifelong Alien fan, but when I was asked to do this feature, I decided to approach it without watching the films again. That way the scenes I pick are the ones that have truly stuck in my mind, not the ones that I pick up on after watching one of the movies again.
As such, the bulk of these scenes come from Alien and Aliens although I do like Alien 3 more than a lot of people; Alien: Resurrection, although very entertaining, is my least favourite of the four movies. (I've also restricted myself to the original Alien films, as I don't think vs. Predator and Prometheus are pure Alien.

First Contact was supposed to herald a new series of films that would keep the Star Trek franchise fat and happy after the baton was passed from the original crew in the unfortunately obligatory Generations, and by most measures it was a glorious success. Sadly of course, that success was largely voided by the next two Tng films, the TV show quality Insurrection and the abominable Nemesis.
While the original crew has now been recast and have been a (debatable) success in their own right in J.J. Abram’s films, it is unlikely that Tng will ever get the same vindication on the silver screen.
So, let us take a look back at what worked and what didn’t in what would and should be Tng’s finest film hour.

I recently read a list ranking the 12 Star Trek films from worst to best. To my surprise Insurrection was placed bottom. Surely 5 is the worst one?!
Seriously, like have you ever watched 5?
For me there are three categories of Trek film, ‘good’, ‘bad’ and ‘ok’. Insurrection falls into the ‘ok’ category (along with 3, 7, 10).
Following on from First Contact was always going to be tough, but it all had all the right ingredients. Jonathan Frakes returned to direct, Jerry Goldsmith returned for the music, it was the first film to be fully CGI for the ship scenes too. It could of been great.
Insurrection is not a brilliant film. But it’s not the worst Trek film. I decided to put my case across the only sensible way, anonymously though the internet. Please comment away, good or bad comments appreciated, this is my first article.

When it comes to Star Trek movies, there are roughly 5 commonly accepted good movies (The Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, First Contact, and the 2009 film) and 7 mediocre to bad ones (all the rest), although tastes and opinions vary. With a track record like that, it’s no wonder that fans like to think about what could’ve been, especially with a rich (if sometimes ridiculous and convoluted) expanded universe providing all sorts of material that could’ve been adapted.
In order to avoid impossible adaptations (and keep this list from ballooning out of control), this list will be limited to things that were either published or being produced before the release of the movies they replace. They also have to be an improvement in some way over the stories they replaced, otherwise there’d be a decent chance of winding up with even worse movies than we got in reality.

In almost everything, there is subtext, intentional or not. In the ‘not’ category is the significant black cloud coming with the silver lining of three massive developments in movieland this year. Firstly, after months of feverish speculation, J.J. Abrams was chosen as the man to helm the return of Star Wars to the big screen; he confirmed his worthiness for the role with the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, a mega-hit blockbuster action adventure putting the highly rated Star Trek 2009 into the shadows; almost in an attempt to draw attention away from Disney and Spielberg’s protégé, James Cameron announced that the most successful film of all time, his film Avatar, would indeed have the three sequels he had long discussed, thankfully with different screen writers covering the wordy bits. Cue much jubilation from fandom; the silver lining. The malignant black cloud, the subtext, was the continued throes of...

In order to win, an ambitious brother embraces the darkness in this fan film based on "League of Legends."
The three-part "Shadowfall" stars Isky Fay and David Cheung as Shen and Zed, shedding some light on the backstory of the two martial artists, as the ambitious and imatient Zed (Cheung) embraces his shadow powers in order to surpass his talented sibling. All three parts of "Shadowfall" made their debut today on Machinima Realm.
"Shadowfall" joins "League of Legends: Blind Ambition," another short which made its premiere today from the brothers at K&K Productions. That mini-movie took a look at the origins of blind monk Lee Sin as he doled out some judicious butt-kicking against scarred assassin Katarina. The shorts, based on Riot Games' "League of Legends" are from filmmakers Harry and George Kirby.

With the release of the second Star Trek feature from director J.J. Abrams, Star Trek Into Darkness, earlier this summer it seems like as good a time as any to have some fun and remember the best Star Trek movie scenes from earlier films that are, well, just plain fun. I would assume that by now, you’ve at the very least seen one of the Abrams-helmed Star Trek films. Critical reaction for Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness was almost universally positive and each film found a receptive audience in both fans and non-fans alike. But, that wasn’t how most Star Trek films have traditionally been received. Apart from Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, the series hadn’t really produced an entry that could readily appeal to non-fans. While it’s true that Wrath of Khan and First Contact were popular movies, they were still mostly...

With Star Trek into Darkness doing very healthy business and exceeding its predecessor’s worldwide gross by a cool few million dollars, it’s pretty inevitable that we’ll be seeing a third movie in J.J Abram’s rebooted universe soon enough. Whether Abrams will be the man to helm it due to Star Wars commitments is another matter entirely, but something that fans have been discussing is just who the antagonist could be for The Enterprise’s next adventure.
As they embark on a deep space exploration and venture through uncharted territory, whose paths might they cross? All signs indicate that The Klingons will take centre stage, and that does seem logical (to paraphrase a certain Vulcan officer).

Spanning eleven films and five TV series (six if you include the animated series), Star Trek has a vast wealth of stories to choose from. From scientific anomalies to epic space battles, time travel to alternate realities, Star Trek has covered every spectrum of sci-fi.
And throughout these stories there are many jaw-dropping moments…when for one minute everything is turned on its head. That is the art of the true ‘Wtf’ moment. It’s not just a scene where something big happens. It’s the unpredictable moment when you as the audience are blind-sided. It’s the moment when you ask ‘did that really just happen?’
And Star Trek has had plenty of them! And a note of warning. I write this assuming you have seen Star Trek Into Darkness.

Jj Abrams latest installment in the Star Trek franchise successfully manages to be exciting and still actually be about something. It’s the best Trek film in a long time.
Star Trek films have been hit-and-miss over the years. Even with the original cast, led by William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, the Trek franchise had a lot of peaks and valleys. This one is a peak, and it corrects most of the flaws from the previous film. The 2009 film was a good action film, but not a good Star Trek film. This film is both. It appeases both people who are looking for slam-bang action, and those of us who loved the deeper nuance of classic Trek.
The story begins with a still-raw Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) commanding the USS Enterprise with his typical reckless, rebellious style. His well-meaning technique of ignore-the-rules-and-follow-your-gut gets him in hot water with Star Fleet command,...

Here it is folks, the final day of Star Trek Week!
Star Trek: Enterprise (Ent), or simply Enterprise as it was known for the first two years, was the series that many fans blame for killing Star Trek. It premiered the same year Voyager ended and by that point it was felt that Star Trek in general needed a break. Waiting a few years to make people hungry for Star Trek again would not have been a bad thing in my opinion. That said, I always enjoyed Ent and was disappointed that it wasn’t given seven seasons like its brethren. That’s right, Enterprise was the first series since the original that did not last seven seasons.
The premiere episode, Broken Bow, debuted on September 26, 2001 to big ratings but for the next four years those ratings would slide down and never recover. In fact, during the later part of season three,...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
This week sees the release of Star Trek into Darkness, the newest entry in the Star Trek film series featuring the rebooted alternative timeline. Kirk (Chris Pine) and the Enterprise crew must stop a powerful galactic terrorist named John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) from presumably destroying the Earth. Is he Gary Mitchell? Is he the rumored alternative version of Khan? Or is he just some pissed off former Starfleet officer out for revenge? Since the trailers absolutely refuse to dish out any specific details on the film I guess we’ll see tomorrow.
Being a huge fan of the films, I figured it was time to put together some of the best moments thus far in series. Some are humorous while some are more emotional but the main factor linking them all together is that every single one of them is totally badass.

We all know that Star Trek movies have had something of a varied time over the years. We’ve had the good, like The Wrath of Khan and The Search For Spock, the funny/silly, as in The Voyage Home and of course the downright awful, thinking here of course of the original Motion Picture (I still wake up some nights shivering about that one!). In the main though, the recent Trek films have been if not great, then mostly good, and with First Contact only two years ago now, I think we all agree the movie franchise finally got it right. At last, the movie was tied in to not only a Next Gen episode, but one of the most important and pivotal ones, The Best Of Both Worlds, and Patrick Stewart gave a thundering performance.
So, surely the future must be bright for Trek films. It would certainly seem so,...

Enterprise, of course, was the fourth spin-off to the original Star Trek and serves as a bridge between the feature film First Contact and the Enterprise of Captain Kirk. The interview with Brannon is presented as it was originally written back then. Enterprise: Talking New Beginnings With Brannon Braga Written by and copyright Edward Gross So can someone please explain the Enterprise phenomenon? Let’s face it, pretty much everyone was tired of the franchise by the end of Voyager’s run and the vast majority of people were ready for Star Trek to warp the hell out of here for a couple of years. Yet here we are once again, on the threshold of the fourth television spin-off of Gene Roddenberry’s 1960s creation and somehow there’s genuine buzz about this show. What gives? “It’s inexplicable,” admits a similarly surprised Brannon Braga, who co-created the series...

Five series and eleven films is pretty good going for a show that was cancelled in 1969 for poor ratings. Within that accomplishment, we have been given some the most iconic characters in film and TV history. But not every Star Trek character developed into what the writers originally envisioned. For every James T. Kirk, we had a Commander Chakotay.
Sometimes it was down to poor acting but usually it was writers and producers having no idea what to do with a character, or not giving them enough TV time to develop. The result was that fans dreaded any episode based around that person…*cough…Chakotay…*cough…
So who could we have easily sent to a Klingon prison planet for draining the life out of the franchise? Who made us reach for the fast forward button every time they were on screen? Find out as WhatCulture brings you 20 Star Trek characters that bored us senseless.

After Iron Man 3, the biggest event of tonight’s Super Bowl schedule was undoubtedly the release of the new Star Trek Into Darkness trailer, which did an incredible job of tightening every Star Trek fan’s excitement for the upcoming sequel.
It might have been a little light on Kirk and Spock, but when you have a villain as immediately compelling as Benedict Cumberbatch’s officially unnamed antagonist, why would you deflect attention anywhere else?
Now that the dust has settled on the night’s releases, here are the four big things we learned from the Star Trek Into Darkness Super Bowl trailer.
4. We Have A Compelling Villain
It’s taken a long time for Star Trek to really realise that a compelling villain is the key to engaging audiences. The Next Generation knew it with Q, even if he was never given enough opportunity to really flex his villainous muscles,...

The guys over at Art Asylum and Diamond Select have previewed a couple of new series of Minimates, and they are pretty awesome.
First up is the Series 1 of the new Star Trek Legacy Series. I find it completely apropos that as I sat down to write this post Jerry Goldsmiths theme for Star Trek: First Contact began playing on my Pandora playlist.
Series one of the this new line will consist of characters from two movies and two series. The first, and in my case, most anticipated are Admiral James T. Kirk and Khan Noonien Singh from the pivotal Trek film Wrath of Khan. Also included in this series is Captain Picard and the Borg Queen from First Contact, Captain Sisko and Jem Hadar from Season 7 of Dsn and Captain Archer and Xindi from Enterprise. Each set will retail from $9.99 at a specialty store near you.

While there aren’t a lot of games I would like to see sequels to; in fact I could probably count them all on one hand: Mass Effect is not one of them.
I respect BioWare for everything they have done, and not only just for the Mass Effect series. They are among my favourite developers, and I generally look forward to any new content from them. However the thought of a sequel makes my skin crawl.
Currently in its early stages of design, Casey Hudson posed the question on whether we would “be more interested in a game that takes place before the trilogy, or after?“ Why it shouldn’t be set in the future, should be obvious. Unless BioWare plans on making four different games (and I’m including the ‘Defiance’ ending), then you will undoubtedly see the classic meme, asking “what do you mean none of my choices mattered?...

Shohei Manabe’s manga “Smuggler” makes it to the big screen courtesy of director Katsuhito Ishii, previously known for varied and off beat fare such as “A Taste of Tea”, the bizarre “Funky Forest: the First Contact” and the frankly crazed “Party 7”. With Ishii at the helm, the film is an unsurprisingly wild take on the Japanese yakuza genre, Satoshi Tsumabuki (“Waterboys”) starring as an unfortunate young man pulled into an oddball and extremely violent criminal underworld of crooks, corpse disposal and murderous assassins. The film starts off with Tsumabuki as Kinuta, a slacker who gave up on a not particularly promising acting career, forced to work as a smuggler in order to pay back his debt to a group of local heavies. Serving under veteran Joe (Nagase Masatoshi, “Sakuran”), his life gets complicated when the latest package on the back of their beat up truck turns out to...
