The story behind New York Ninja is almost as incredible as the film itself. In 1984 Taiwanese martial artist and actor John Liu came to New York City with the intention of filming his latest movie there. While he did shoot it, he was so unimpressed by the results he abandoned the project and left the unedited footage in a vault and retired from filmmaking. An there it sat for thirty-five years later the footage came into the hands of film restoration specialists Vinegar Syndrome. The filmmakers behind 80s beefcake throwback Commando Ninja are back, planning a new chapter in their humorous and ultra violent action adventures, Commando Ninja II: Invasion America. They look to be playing on good old Cold War era fear that enemy forces would invade 'Murica and the slew of films that came with it. Invasion USA and Red Dawn come to mind. Rambo III comes to mind with the return to Vietnam. They have launched a crowdfunding campaign and its off to a roaring start. The production's aim is loftier this time around too, opting to shoot on location in Utah and Thailand, trying to eliminiate as much use of greenscreen as possible. They're also hoping to go 100% practical in camera effects...

If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.
Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.
But the company also produced titillating titles like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, slasher fare such as Schizoid and New Year’s Evil,...

The heyday of Cannon Films, that is when the company was led by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus back in the eighties, has been subject of fairly recent documentaries: Mark Hartley’s Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films and Hilla Medalia’s The Go-Go Boys: The Inside Story of Cannon Films. And now, for those fans of crazy cinema that would like to dig even deeper into the world of Cannon, there’s a new book out that tackles one specific filmmaker from those glorious days. Stories From The Trenches: Adventures In Making High Octane Hollywood Movies With Cannon Veteran Sam Firstenberg is a mammoth collection of interviews with the director behind such Cannon flicks as Revenge of the Ninja and Ninja III: The Domination...

Both “The Exorcist” and “Enter the Dragon” came out in 1973, igniting their respective genres at the box-office as never before. So you’d think more than a few enterprising souls would have tried to combine demonic-possession chills and fighting-action thrills. But apart from 1984’s flabbergasting camp classic “Ninja III: The Domination” — with Lucinda Dickey as an aerobics instructor who’s suddenly from hell — it’s hard to think of much in that vein before new arrival “The Divine Fury.”

Jason (aka Joo-hwan) Kim’s film is a slick concoction that affords moderate guilty-pleasure fun for a while, though it goes on too long to diminishing effect. There will never be another studio like the Cannon Group, the company co-owned by Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, who famously churned out dozens upon dozens of low-budget genre films in the 1980s. Though known for producing mostly schlock, the Cannon run of the ‘80s is one of my favorite periods for movies, probably because they made exactly the kinds of movies I grew up loving and still do to this day.
A shameless combination of Flashdance, The Exorcist, and a ninja movie, Ninja III: The Domination is the third installment of Cannon’s “ninja” trilogy, none of which have anything to do with one another except that Sho Kosugi appears in all of them, each time playing a totally different character. It begins as all ninja movies do: on a golf course. We’re then introduced to Lucinda Dickey (Breakin’), who stars as a woman who works on telephone...

The journey of this interview collection starts even before he made his way to direct box office hits just like Revenge Of The Ninja, Ninja III: The Domination, Breakin‘ II: Electric Boogaloo, American Ninja, and several others. The conversations Siedelmann recorded with Sam are very thorough, and they shed light on his origins and influences, including childhood memories, private biographical chapters, his years as a film student in Los Angeles, the atmosphere he grew up around in Israel, and his early work as an assistant director and technician for people like Menahem Golan, Charles Band, Ephraim Kishon, Boaz Davidson, and many...

Enter the Ninja
The film that heralded the start of the ninja craze in the West, Enter the Ninja was one of many martial arts action films made by the uber-prolific producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus after they purchased Cannon Films in the late 70s.
Directed by Golan, Enter the Ninja tells the story of Cole (Franco Nero), a Westerner who is trained in the art of ninjitsu in Japan. Finishing his training he heads the Philippines to visit his war buddy Frank Landers (Alex Courtney) and his newlywed wife Mary Ann (Susan George), who are the owners of farm which is under attack from unscrupulous businessman Charles Venarius (Christopher George) because – unbeknownst to the Landers – there’s a huge oil deposit under their land! Of course having Franco Nero’s ninja on their side means that the Landers can easily see off Venarius’ henchmen. That is until he...

Eureka Entertainment have announced they are to release The Ninja Trilogy, a trio of crazed martial-arts classics from the 80s starring Sho Kosugi, in a Dual Format (Blu-ray & DVD) edition in the UK on 18th January 2016.
The wild world of Cannon Films rarely became more delirious or influential than this trio of rollocking, crazed action classics. Beginning with Enter the Ninja, they spearheaded a craze for the titular martial-arts assassin that spiralled throughout the decade and beyond, but this eccentric trilogy still stands alone.
Enter the Ninja (featuring Franco Nero and Susan George) deals with a couple on oil-rich land in the Philippines under siege from a ruthless industrialist. Revenge of the Ninja moves to Salt Lake City, Utah, where Cho and his son Kane begin a new life after their family is killed in Japan. After opening a doll shop, a criminal betrayal leads to an almighty showdown. Ninja III: The Domination...

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.
When Ted (James Fitzgibbons) comes home for Christmas he brings his new girlfriend Sarah (Claudia Peyton) with him. His sister and mom’s boyfriend seem to like her, but his mom (Helen Benton) stops dead in her tracks when they meet. Cathy has a gift, she’s able to read minds. To help control her ability, Cathy spends a lot of time painting. And something about Sarah has given her the chills. Cathy’s reaction has cast a pall on the Yuletide season.

Though it saddens to me say, Fantastic Fest 2014 has come to a close. Another year of movies and mayhem has ended and somehow the newly renovated Alamo Drafthouse is still standing – even if the crowds partied hard enough every night to make me expect the worse. Fantastic Fest has always shown the best genre films from around the world and this year was certainly no different. In fact, this year’s lineup featured an extraordinary array of bloody slashers, dark comedies, bizarre love stories, and crazy documentaries. Here’s my Top 10 Favorites From Fantastic Fest 2014!
Honorable Mentions:
The Tribe
The idea of a film without any dialogue or even a film score can be a tough sell for even a seasoned filmgoer like myself. So it really says something (no pun intended) that The Tribe soars as a unique storytelling experience that showcases pure and raw emotions. The film follows...

The best way to describe how I approach Fantastic Fest is like summer camp. It happens once a year. You get back together with old friends. Yet in this case, this non-traditional camp is for fans of the most bizarre, violent, horrific, and Fantastic movies you could imagine. And even still, Fantastic Fest is so much more. This will be more third time attending Fantastic Fest and We Are Movie Geeks fourth time covering the crazy events that take place in Austin every September. For eight days I will be immersed in a world that is unlike any other film festival I have ever attended. What other festival is going to feature events like an opening night food fight, a karaoke party, a “nerd rap throwdown,” and the signature event at the festival – Fantastic Debates (which includes a verbal debate followed by a literal boxing match). These are just a...

This video supercut of "Arcades in Movies" was created by the Huffington Post. It features a lot of movies from mid-70s to the mid-90s, which was the golden age for arcades.
Back when I was a kid I wanted to own an arcade. I thought it would be such a fun job. Oh, how the times have changed. If I wanted to go to and arcade today, odds are I'd have to go to a Dave and Buster's.
Movies in the super cut via /Film:
“Rancho Deluxe” (1975) “Jaws” (1975) “Jaws 2″ (1978) “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” (1978) “Dawn of the Dead” (1978) “Midnight Madness” (1980) “Bustin’ Loose” (1981) “Death Wish II” (1982) “Rocky III” (1982) “Tron” (1982) “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” (1982) “Jekyll and Hyde… Together Again” (1982) “The Toy” (1982) “Joysticks” (1983) “WarGames” (1983) “Twilight Zone: The Movie” (1983) “Strange Brew” (1983) “Nightmares” [segment 'Bishop of Battle'] (1983) “Never Say Never Again” (1983) “High School U.S.A.” (1983) “Rumble Fish” (1983) “Footloose” (1984) “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock...

This week: James Franco plays the titular small-time magician turned wonderful wizard in "Oz the Great and Powerful," Sam Raimi's prequel to 1939's "The Wizard of Oz."
Also new this week is the action-horror flick "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" with Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton, "Snitch" with Dwayne Johnson and the 40th Anniversary Ultimate Collector's Edition Blu-ray of Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon."
'Oz the Great and Powerful'
Box Office: $233 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 60% Fresh
Storyline: Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is a self-described con man/circus magician with questionable ethics who gets whisked away by a tornado to the Land of Oz. There he meets three witches — Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams) — who each have different agendas for the prophesized "wizard." Although Oscar doesn't possess the great powers they anticipated, he must quickly find out who is good or wicked and use...

One of the campest, yet coolest, of the 80s ninja movies, Ninja lll mixes the becoming played-out at the time Ninja genre with something akin to The Exorcist in a film that epitomises all that is great about 80s B-movie cinema and all that was great about Golan-Globus and Cannon Films, whose demise, in my opinion, has left a huge blot of the movie landscape.

The Cannon Group struck gold with its first martial arts film, 1981's Enter the Ninja. Though Western audiences had seen ninjas before, most notably in the 1967 James Bond film You Only Live Twice, this movie changed how these shadow warriors were portrayed on the screen.
Transplanting martial arts mayhem into a gunslinger plotline, the ninja gained near-superhuman abilities and a more heroic disposition. The resulting film was successful enough for Cannon to launch two franchises (Enter the Ninja and American Ninja) and embedded the art of Ninjutsu into American pop culture.
The film opens as Westerner Cole (Franco Nero) is completing his final test in Ninjutsu, thus earning the right to practice and teach the art. But Hasegawa (Sho Kosugi), a high-ranking ninja in the dojo, isn't happy with...

This may sound like utter bullshit to a lot of you out there, but I swear that the following anecdote is 100% true. Pinky swear! You see, I had a very unusual dream not too long ago, one that featured a gas station/video store from my childhood. As an adult, my dream self randomly stumbled across this business just as I remember it from the mid-80′s, complete with old issues of Cracked Magazine, boxes of Garbage Pail Kids stickers, and an odd assortment of motion pictures on VHS. On the wall, next to scores of weird titles that may or may not exist, was a copy of “Ninja III: The Domination”, a movie I haven’t thought about in 20 years, at the very least. I’m utterly thrilled that my fractured subconscious was looking out for me, as I may never have remembered it otherwise. Honestly, I can’t...

Ice-t; most people know him best now as Detective Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: Svu or if you're a hip-hop fan, like myself, you'll always remember him as one of the pioneers of "gangsta" rap before there was even a term for it. A lot of us even dig his surprisingly eclectic film career. He's been in movies as diverse as New Jack City, Surviving the Game, Tank Girl, Johnny Mnemonic and Leprechaun in the Hood.
However, it's his very early foray into the world of films that I want to focus on in this installment of Trailer Trash.
Before Ice-t had even released a record, he began to gain notoriety as a rapper and songwriter, in large part due to his work in motion pictures. While a lot of his early 80's film work can be considered corny and laughable by today's standards and a far cry from the...

Cannon Films, like any other studio yesterday or today, wanted to keep a good thing going, and for them in the 1980s it was the ninja movie. After two early successes for the studio in Enter the Ninja and Revenge of the Ninja (recall this film’s flashback here), success wasn’t guaranteed a third time in their Ninja III: The Domination. The studio took a break, as did director Sam Firstenberg, but in 1984 the studio wanted to revisit the genre, but with a twist. The deadliest art of the Orient is now in the hands of an American.
Killer Film catches back up with director Sam Firstenberg for an Action Packed Flashback for 1985′s American Ninja.

The ninja film isn’t widely loved like the samurai genre, and that’s mostly due to the lack of any significant ninja movies, especially compared to what Akira Kurosawa delivered in his career. This is a tad unfair, but let’s change that.
After directing Enter the Ninja in 1981, Menahem Golan wanted to follow this hit for his Golan-Globus Films (Cannon Films) with a sequel. In what has become widely recognized as one of the best ninja movies ever made, 1983′s Revenge of the Ninja features some of the coolest ninja action and violence, as well as sharp direction by the newcomer Sam Firstenberg, who would go on to direct some of the more popular films for Cannon Films, including American Ninja and Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogalo.
Director Sam Firstenberg chats with Killer Film about his breakout hit Revenge of the Ninja in another dose of Action Packed Flashback.

Make no mistake, in Ninja Assassin you get everything you could ever want out of a movie titled "Ninja Assassin." There are ninjas, with plenty of hot ninja action. Lots of swords, and the metallic slicing noise that signifies there is a blade on screen, even if it touches only air. Ridiculous amounts of blood. And Sho Kasugi. It's got a "ninja" and Two "ass"es in the title, you know it's gonna kick your ass. Truth be told, Ninja Assassin is the greatest movie Cannon Films never made.
The plot revolves around a ninja, played by Korean pop superstar Rain. Rain looks like he was a pop superstar, but all those years of bitter rage finally get to manifest themselves in an ass kicking orgy. As a child, Rain (whose character actually has a name I didn't bother to learn because it's a ninja movie and that's an unimportant...
