Sierra Bradway’s father was killed four years ago in the line of duty. On Saturday, she found a special way to make him a part of a big milestone when she took her prom photos at his gravesite in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The 17-year-old high schooler was only expecting to have her date, Brock, and a photographer there, but when she stepped out of her SUV at Indianapolis’s Crown Hill Cemetery, she was greeted by numerous police officers from the Indianapolis Police Department.

Bradley Rubenstein: Your paintings are really complex, in the sense that you are layering these veils of color, which could end up being very concrete, like a Morris Louis. But there is something in your choices of arrangement, or when to stop, that sets them into play in a way that I find rare in a lot of abstract painting recently. A lot of painters are content letting the paint just be paint.

An eight-car commuter train derailed at Chicago O'Hare Airport's underground station on Monday morning, leaving 32 people injured. After skidding across a platform and onto an escalator, the Blue Line train finally came to a stop. Fortunately, none of the reported injuries are life-threatening, and the accident occurred around 3 a.m., so the typically busy station was far less crowded. One of the passengers, Denise Adams, recounted the incident, saying, "I heard a boom, and when I got off the train, the train was all the way up the escalator. It was a lot of panic." The city's police and fire departments are working with the Chicago Transit Authority to determine a cause, and the station is expected to be closed for 12 to 24 hours. An eight-car Chicago commuter train plowed across a platform and scaled an escalator at an underground station at one of the nation's busiest airports early Monday, injuring 32 people on board, officials said. No one suffered life-threatening injuries in the Blue Line derailment at O'Hare International Airport, Chicago Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago said during a morning briefing. An enormous disaster was avoided thanks to the timing of the crash at 02:50 a.m. The bustling station is usually packed with travelers making their way to or from Chicago from the major airport, and a Chicago Transit Authority official said the crash...

Long Distance Revolutionary: A Journey With Mumia Abul-jamal is a documentary from producer, director, cinematographer Stephen Vittoria about convicted cop killer and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal (real name: Wesley Cook), an articulate, relatively intelligent radical with a distinctive speaking voice and a passion for public relations. Slickly produced, and with an excellent original score by Robert Guillory, the film is presented as a collective form of tribute to Mumia, with dozens of “witnesses” including Amy Goodman, Angela Davis, Dick Gregory, Ruby Dee, Cornel West, Peter Coyote, Lydia Barashango, Juan Gonzalez, and Linn Washington, all testifying on-camera to the brilliance of the subject’s writing skills. Mumia himself is represented through archival footage, voice-over, prison visitation footage, and by an actor portraying the convicted killer moping in his prison cell.
Before viewing, I had never paid much attention to the Mumia Abu-Jamal case, but the film inspired me to do some research.

Despite being an avid fan of the docu form circa Errol Morris’ Thin Blue Line, unfortunately you won’t find many docu items on this countdown but making the top 100 cut is one that I’ve been tracking for a couple of years now in photographer Shaul Schwarz’s directorial debut. Six years in the making, Schwarz is an award-winning photo journalist with nerves of steel who somehow managed to immerse himself in a pop culture not related to dangerous celebs from the Hollywood hills, but instead one that belongs to the same violent backdrop of Gerardo Naranjo’s Miss Bala.
Gist: To a growing number of Mexicans and Latinos in the Americas, narco traffickers have become iconic outlaws and the new models of fame and success.

The episode opens with a bang. Literally. A bomb misfires during testing, critically injuring two male worker. A-List actor Shia Labeouf is reportedly back in Chicago filming a new movie. And no, this time he hasn't been arrested. (Yet, at least.)
According to the Chicago Tribune, Labeouf -- who is no stranger to filming in the Second City, of course -- was in the city's Wicker Park neighborhood, walking out of an alley near the Damen Blue Line train station under the watchful eye of a small film crew and a police officer.
Labeouf was also seen Sunday at Underground Wonder Bar on the Near North Side, the Tribune reports. The Oh No They Didn't blog last week posted a photo of a man they said was Labeouf apparently in the midst of shooting a film scene on the Wells Street Bridge downtown.

With the 2012 Oscar ceremony taking place tonight, I’ve rounded up the 25 worst Academy Awards decisions of the past quarter century to feed filmgoers collective rage. Many of these are outright bad winners, but I’ve also reserved special spots in this countdown for blunders in production, nominations, and existing in the first place.
So take a deep breath, go watch I Saw the Devil to get in the right mood, and dig in.
25. Fifty-Nine Years of Rocky History
I did not want to imply that the Academy was all sunshine and roses before 1988; so a brief history of their ineptitude seems in order. In fact, history is a perfect lead in because, even though this is reason number twenty-five, it underlies the basic principle that caused this list to manifest. The Academy never learns from its mistakes. It never changes.

Things have been rather quiet on the JFK assassination conspiracy front in recent years - but it isn't hard to remember when Oliver Stone stirred things up a full two decades ago with his seminal film JFK. Though many have cried foul on Stone's tendency to play fast and loose with the facts, no one can deny the way it propelled the subject of the government conspiracy into the American psyche. Famed documentarian Errol Morris (TheThin Blue Line, The Fog of War) is raising the issue once again with a six and a half minute short focusing on one mysterious character who was in Dallas that day. The fascinating short may soon become part of a documentary feature or series - but for now...

★★★★☆ Academy Award-winning director Errol Morris (Thin Blue Line [1988], Fog of War [2003]) returns with his ninth feature-length documentary Tabloid (2010), an intriguing and jovial examination of the sensationalism which fuels tabloid journalism. Morris found the perfect subject in Joyce McKinney for his exposé of how truth can often be distorted by the mainstream media. Her stranger-than-fiction story switches between the accounts of a deluded fantasist and old-school romantic, continually blurring the lines of fact and fiction.

Herzog continues his Americana with Into the Abyss, a documentary about Death Row. It is perhaps the most somber Herzog film in years. There have been similar death penalty issue films like Errol Morris's Thin Blue Line, and more recently Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky's Paradise Lost docs, which actually helped to exonerate their subjects (or at least to have them out of jail). But Herzog rather concentrates on the impact of violence that is felt on both sides of the crime. He doesn't overtly state the institutional killing is wrong. But he certainly makes us think about it with a skillfully balanced filmmaking. Stripped away is Herzog's usual droll narration. Mostly comprised of interviews and crime scene videos, the film briskly moves on one...

This weekend includes at least three elements: the Jewish holy week between the New Year and the Day of Atonement, the weekend, and 24-Hour Comics Day.
I note that first part just in case somebody reads this to my mother. Hi, Mom!
24-Hour Comics Day was created by Scott McCloud and it is exactly what the name implies: comics creators get together in local conclaves (not autoclaves; that’s a completely different thing) “to create a 24-page comic book in 24 continuous hours.” It’s sort of a tribute to the days of yore when a creator would get an emergency over-the-weekend assignment and get a bunch of friends together to write, pencil, ink, letter and color the entire book over the weekend, deliver it on Monday, and hopefully get paid for their effort.
Of course, way back then comic books ran 64 pages – 48 pages after World War II hit speed. But...

The Film:
Honest Man depicts the heady life and times of R. Budd Dwyer, former Pennsylvania politician and State Treasurer. The documentary begins with a kick to the gut: In 1987, after Dwyer was convicted on bribery charges, he called a press conference; members of the Forth Estate assumed he would use the event to formally resign from office; instead, before rolling television cameras (in a cinéma vérité moment, reminiscent of Network’s Howard Beale), Dwyer thrust a blue-black pistol into his mouth and shot himself in the head (and into VHS-tape immortality) as members of the crowd cried out, “Don’t do it, Budd!” The film, regrettably, omits any mention of Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain’s obsession with the video death clip.
This doc then rewinds, chronicling the rise of Dwyer from an extroverted teacher to leading Republican wonk, who shared the Republican National Convention stage with President Ronald Reagan.

Errol Morris succeeds against all odds in besting his previous Olympians of quirkiness. Legendary indie director Errol Morris is best known for his Oscar winner .The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara. and his equally powerful .Standard Operating Procedure. and .The Thin Blue Line.. This film takes a substantially different approach. It does not deal with the darkness of tragic missteps of justice caused by moral incompetence. Instead, in making a powerful statement about truth and justice, it does so in a very positive and very funny manner. In making .Standard Operating Procedure. Morris executed one of the best philosophical investigation of the meaning of photographs currently available in media. The film...

Earlier this evening, a user on the Criterion Forum posted several pieces from a conversation that he had with the IFC President, Jonathan Sehring, after a screening of Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams. In his forum post, he discusses several films that were brought up in their conversation, as well as those that Criterion is looking at releasing in the future.
For myself, the biggest piece of news is not anything that they’re looking to release, but one that they’re skipping. Apparently Criterion’s Peter Becker considers Abbas Kiarostami’s Certified Copy to be “minor Kiarostami” and they won’t be releasing the film as a home video release. This is terribly disappointing, as it was one of my favorite films that I’ve seen in ages. There is a DVD / Blu-ray that was released in the UK, but we still don’t have a Us release at this point.

Now is a good time to be coming home for Rahm Emanuel, Raymond Sokolov writes in this week's Newsweek. The city has always been great-with world-class urban architecture, food, music and shopping-but now it's finally hip.
In the final days of the campaign that got him elected mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel crossed paths with Patricia Sandifer on the Blue Line of the city's transit system. Emanuel, a long-serving Washington insider, is leading a pack of high-powered Obama stalwarts back to the Windy City. Sandifer, who commutes to an administrator's job in a local law firm, is better known as Boss Lady in the world of juke, Chicago's lightning-fast dance/electronic-music craze.

82nd Annual Academy Awards Best Documentary Feature winners for The Cove; Louie Psihoyos and Fisher Stevens backstage with Paula DuPre Pesman and Ric O'Barry
Photo: Todd Wawrychuk / A.M.P.A.S. With last week's release of The Tillman Story and A Film Unfinished, Oscar Doc season is officially in full swing. A perfect time to make some early predictions for the five films that will battle out for this year's Academy Award for best feature documentary.
The Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary has been one of the most difficult competitions to handicap over the years for several reasons. The rules were often confusing and the nomination process was quite unfair prior to 2002. That's when the Academy finally made significant changes based on the large number of complaints from both filmmakers and the public at large. Up until that time decisions were made by a handful of people and...

At long last, Microsoft has announced that Blue Line Innovations' PowerCost Monitor will the first partner device for Hohm, a web-based energy-monitoring application that offers in-depth personal consumption data. Hohm already automatically uploads energy use data for customers of certain utilities, but the PowerCost Monitor allows anyone living in a single-family detached home to to keep track of power use.
Blue Line's PowerCost Monitor has actually been available for years, but the company is releasing today a new version specially designed for compatibility with Hohm. It's not cheap--$249 gets the device, an optical sensor, portable wireless monitor, and WiFi gateway--but Blue Line claims that customers who use the product save up to 18% on energy costs.
Microsoft says that it chose the PowerCost Monitor as its first device partner because of its easy installation process--customers just mount an included optical sensor on the outside of their utility meter. The monitor...

In light of the analysis of the character relationships in Brennan's new book, Bone of Contention, in the latest episode of Bones, "The Bones on a Blue Line," I thought it would be fun to reflect on what the show itself would be like without the amazing relationships between the characters.
Imagine if you will a Bones based solely on the cases. Somewhat painful isn't it? Now, imagine our beloved crime drama as a documentary. Yes, you read that right. Turns out, before Bones ever came to fruition, producer Barry Josephson bought the rights to a series of Kathy Reichs' novels and was planning to produce a documentary on her. ...

The push and pull of sexual tension has been a hallmark of Fox's procedural drama Bones since the series' very beginning. Fans have grasped on to any and all indications about whether the will-they-or-won't-they couple Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) will finally give into temptation. So do they in tonight's 99th episode or next week's landmark 100th episode of Bones? Well, that would be telling, now wouldn't it? What I will say is that these two superlative episodes of Bones--particularly when viewed back-to-back--offer two very nice bookends about the complexities of relationships, both professional and personal. For a group of people whose main focus is discovering crime and unearthing bones, they're not exactly that well-equipped to deal with matters of the (still-beating) heart. I had the opportunity to watch these next two episodes of Bones a few weeks back and was completely sucked in by their charm,...

Warning: Mild Spoilers Ahead
David Boreanaz got us all excited about the 100th episode of Bones coming up next week. To prepare for that interview, I got an early copy of the episode, but also a copy of episode number 99 so I’d be caught up. 100 episodes is certainly the milestone to celebrate, but there’s a lot of big stuff to be excited about this week too.
The story manages to present the very artistic analysis of the show in a sort of meta analysis from within. A guest character gets the Jeffersonian gang analyzing Dr. Brennan’s books. Do people read them for the mysteries, or the relationships between the characters? Of course, they’re actually discussing the balance of storytelling in their own lives, which is the essence of the show.
Whether you watch Bones for the cases they solve or to see how Booth and Brennan banter,...

The buddy cop genre seems to be cruising back in force. Kevin Smith’s latest – Cop Out – tackles bickering plods, and now it looks like Jamie Foxx and Ashton Kutcher will be an unlikely team for Streets On Fire.Like Cop Out (back when it was called A Couple Of Dicks), Fire is a veteran of the Black List, the scripts that Hollywood types loved but didn’t get produced, in this case, in 2009. Written by Justin Britt-Gibson, it follows a by-the-book Chicago cop (Foxx) who struggles to keep his anger issues under control who teams up with a cocky, arrogant partner (Kutcher, go figure) and they instantly hate each other. But then they’re forced to work together to take down a gang of killers who turn out to be corrupt fellow walkers of the Thin Blue Line.Pajiba reports that Kutcher is producing the film via his own...

Documentary filmmakers want to believe that documentaries can change the world, or at least that they can change opinions and reshape public perception. The reality is as muddled as the very definition of "documentary" itself, which is to say that the wider you expand your net -- Are "60 Minutes" or "Frontline" segments documentaries? -- the more likely you are to find an instance or two of tangible global impact. But the reality is that for every "Thin Blue Line," which actually sprung an innocent man out of prison, you're looking at hundreds of films like "Fahrenheit 911" or even "Paradise...

Harvey Weinstein is known for being very outspoken, and he won’t censor himself for anybody. Oftentimes this can be a hilarious trait, but at the expense of others. This is certainly one of those times when Weinstein did something pretty outlandish that is also extremely funny.

Netflix knows where it's at when it comes to the rental biz; more and more, folks want to stay at home and watch movies instantly. We don't even want to wait for those happy little red envelopes any more. Nope, if it's not on our Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, or computer, we get all squirrelly. (Okay, maybe that last part is just me.) And IFC is also on the cutting edge of home entertainment in its steadily growing on-demand offerings, including their IFC Festival Direct program, where you can watch a selection of movies that have played during recent festivals, and the In Theaters + On Demand program, which offers at-home viewers the chance to see indie flicks the same day they premiere in what's usually limited release.

Chicago – In the United States, the remains of 40,000 people remain unidentified. ABC’s new mystery “The Forgotten” is about a civilian, victims rights group led by Alex (Christian Slater) who tries to solve the cold cases that the officials have left behind because there are no relatives to push for them. They identify the unknown. Sadly, the show probably deserves to remain a mystery to viewers as well.
