Despite writing some of their generation’s biggest hits, Lynyrd Skynyrd never had a song reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Instead, the band that popularized southern rock plateaued at No. 8 after tragedy interrupted their climb up the charts. Yet, despite their struggles, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s music represents a noteworthy evolution in the rock genre.
‘Sweet Home Alabama’ is the only Lynyrd Skynyrd to crack the Billboard Top 10
Released in 1974 on their second album, “Sweet Home Alabama” reached No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 17 weeks. Despite none of them being from Alabama, it was the band’s most successful song.
Before his unexpected death on March 5, 2023, guitarist Gary Rossington spoke to Garden & Gun about how the band came up with the hit song.

Obscene, disturbing yet undeniably intoxicating, the screenplay of “Belladonna of Sadness” (1973) exhibits extraordinarily breath-taking compositions that offer its viewers an experience skirting the line between sadistic indulgence and heart-wrenching anguish. This enigmatic film is the lovechild of prolific writer Osamu Tezuka’s (creator of the Astro Boy series) vision and director Eichii Yamamoto’s enigmatic conception- the third part of the “Animerama” trilogy; a line-up of adult anime feature films initiated by the former in his studio, Mushi Productions between the 1960s till the late 70s.

“Belladonna of Sadness” is not a film renowned for its plot- but for its audacity. Centred around the tragic story of a young woman’s life in her feudal village, the film deals with the torture, persecution, and liberation of Jeanne, after she is brutally raped in a ritual “droit du seigneur” by the village baron on her wedding day.

The Eagles played their first gig since the start of the pandemic at New York’s Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. The tour was originally slated to begin on Sunday, but Hurricane Henri forced them to scramble and bump it back two nights. Here’s fan-shot video of “Hotel California,” which kicked off the evening.
This is a continuation of their aborted 2020 Hotel California tour, which was derailed by the pandemic after just 10 gigs. Every night begins with a complete performance of their 1976 masterpiece. After a brief intermission, they...

Of all the songs President Joe Biden might have quoted during his inaugural address on Wednesday, a song that many people know as a Norah Jones track from a Ken Burns documentary might not have been the first guess.
The song, “American Anthem,” was written by songwriter Gene Scheer and was first sung by Denyce Graves in 1998 for President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton at the Smithsonian Institution during the launch of the “Save America’s Treasures” initiative. It was subsequently performed at other ceremonies, was covered by Patti Labelle and sung by Graves at George W. Bush’s 2005 inauguration; its performance today may tie in with Biden’s unity theme.
Jones’ version dates from 2007 and was featured in “The War,” Burns’ documentary about World War II. Written by Gene Scheer,” it’s an outlier in Jones’ extensive catalog, featured on none of her albums and only available on the series’ soundtrack album.

Music and sports — arguably the two forms of mainstream entertainment hardest hit by the pandemic lockdown — will get some succor on Sunday when ESPN will air its first-ever concert: the Eagles’ “Live from the Forum Mmxviii.”
For those whose roman-numeral-translation skills are lacking, the concert dates from 2018, when the group was on an extensive North American tour that found core members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit accompanied by Vince Gill and Deacon Frey; the latter is the son of late Eagles cofounder Glenn Frey. The group arrived at the Forum in Los Angeles for three sold-out concerts on September 12, 14, and 15, with highlights from all three shows compiled into the new 26-song live album and concert film that premieres on ESPN Sunday night, presented by longtime Eagles fan, ESPN’s Chris Berman (who presumably will not say that the group “could… go… all… the… way!”).

If you haven’t seen the 1986 classic gymnastics film American Anthem then I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Featuring music from John Parr and a young Janet Jones showcasing her incredible flexibility, it’s fun for the entire family. Actually it’s one of those “So bad it’s good” movies and I watch it every single time it’s on television, which is virtually never. If you’ve seen the movie than you’ll know exactly who this guy above is. His real name is Tiny Wells and unfortunately he’s not with us anymore. Wells died in 1990 due to a motorcycle crash. However,

Just about everyone in the entire world knows the song “American Pie” by Don McLean. It’s actually considered somewhat of an American anthem despite the fact that most people don’t realize that the song is about the tragic plane crash involving Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Even so, “American Pie” is played in stadiums all around the country as a rallying cry. It’s been using in commercials, political rallies, and just about anywhere when a group is trying to support patriotism. But the man behind the song, Don McLean, has not had such a patriotic life as

To paraphrase the great American anthem that plays at the end of American cinematic masterpiece Magic Mike Xxl, "All [Channing Tatum does] is win win win no matter what" and yes, that applies to your silly Tonight Show games, Jimmy Fallon. Channing Tatum might seem like America's puppy dog, but no, he is more like America's pet wolf, who succumbs his competitive instincts when the eggs come out. Okay, that metaphor needs work. Anyway, Jimmy Fallon and Channing Tatum played egg roulette on The Tonight Show and Channing Tatum won. Obviously.

This Mexican-born actress has truly crossed over.
With her right hand over her heart, Salma Hayek performed the U.S. National Anthem on the “Late Show with David Letterman” Wednesday -- a performance that ruffled the feathers of the Mexican media, some of whom said that Hayek fumbled with her birth-country’s national anthem.
“Salma sings the U.S. national anthem better than the Mexican one,” reads the title of an article in Mexican daily El Informador, accompanied by a photo with a caption saying: “The Mexican actress Salma Hayek appears to easily forget her homeland.”
The copywriters at El Informador have a point.
Hayek only made it through the first lines of the Mexican anthem before appearing to draw a blank. “Eh, no, really?” She said, before resuming. After one more line, she stopped, saying: “it's enough.”

Alexis Normand probably won't be getting requests to sing "The Star-Spangled Banner" anytime soon.
During Saturday's Memorial Cup game, the Canadian singer severely distorted the U.S. national anthem, stumbling through the lyrics and even pausing at times as she seemed to forget full phrases. Fortunately, audience members at the Canadian ice hockey tournament were good sports and helped Normand finish the song.
Normand followed her horrible rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" with a much better version of "O Canada," the Canadian national anthem. The May 18 match got underway, and the Halifax Mooseheads went on to triumph 7-4 over the visiting Portland Winterhawks from Oregon.
After the blunder, the Saskatoon-based jazz singer took to Twitter to apologize.

Hollywood has long carried an Olympic torch for the Games and their charismatic champions
Before he wore a loincloth as Tarzan and yodeled while swinging across movie screens on a vine, Johnny Weissmuller was an Olympic swimming champ.
The strapping Weissmuller -- 6-foot-5, 190 pounds -- power-splashed his way to five gold medals in the 1924 and ‘28 Olympic Games. Recognizing a marketable hunk when it saw one, Hollywood snapped him up.
"It was like stealing," Weissmuller (1904-1984) once said of his Tarzan career, which included a dozen films between 1932 and ‘48. "There was swimming in it, and I didn't have much to say. How can a guy climb trees, say ‘Me Tarzan, you Jane,’ and make a million?"
I was a sucker for Weismuller’s Tarzan films -- as a kid, I used to watch the scratchy prints that repeatedly aired on Saturday afternoon TV.

NBC will then turn those hot topics into TV segments. I hope Bob Costas enjoys discussing swimmers’ abs!

“What?! It was for research!” That’s the excuse I will inevitably use when people find season 1 of Hey Dude in my DVD collection and judge me for it. It is true, I did need the first season of the landmark (well, to me, anyway) Nickelodeon comedy about life at the Bar None Ranch for our ongoing coverage of ’90s nostalgia. But, in all honesty, I own it because it’s a hilarious throwback to my childhood and I’m still definitely, maybe pining over Ted. Still, the DVD absolutely looks weird being alphabetically nuzzled between Heat and In America...

We're all used to seeing the stars of 'Harry Potter' dazzle us on screen using their proper British accents, but what happens when actors Rupert Grint, Tom Felton and Matthew Lewis are put to the American accent test?
MTV did just that with 'American Talk 2', and hilarity ensures, because watching foreign actors try to speak with a U.S. accent is pretty funny.
From trying to read stereotypical American guy lines ("Hey bro, want to check out the football game in my bitchin' tricked out truck?") and getting quizzed on U.S. pop culture ("Jennifer Lopez?" Felton guessed when shown a picture of Kim Kardashian), it looks like these fellows need to spend some of their post-Hogwarts time stateside.
Finally, they break into what's become an unlikely American anthem: Miley Cyrus' 'Party in the U.S.A." Who knew landing down the catchy tune would prove so difficult?...

For years, I have begged the entertainment gods to put 1986′s American Anthem, starring Olympic gymnast Mitch Gaylord and Janet Jones, on DVD. I’d given up hope. Then, today, I opened a package from an acquaintance, who happens to cover a lot of home entertainment, and found a gift-wrapped DVD with a note that said, “While I can appreciate the camp/pop culture importance of the movie, I found myself asking, ‘Who do I know who would fully love this release?’” He didn’t mention the title in the note, so I opened it skeptically… then gasped, teared up,...

This weekend, The X - Factor chose songs for their acts, which are supposedly American Anthems, but for some strange reason many of the song choices didn.t really fit into that category. The show opened with Cher.s .Empire State Of Mind., which you could say is a New York anthem, but since when has .Don.t Speak. by No Doubt been an American Anthem? In fact, out of all ten acts that sang, only three did songs that you.d consider to be American Anthems, and those acts were Wagner with .Viva Las Vegas., Cher with .Empire State Of Mind. and One Direction with the tackiest of all American Anthems, .Kids In America., which made me want to gargle with...

Cher Lloyd is said to have walked out of the X Factor mansion last Wednesday and travelled 140 miles to her parents home in Malvern.
X Factor contestants are not usually allowed to depart London mid week, however insiders say producers approved Cher’s trip because she was being pushed to breaking point by her fellow finalists.
Sources say that Lloyd’s team mates turned on the 17 year old, amidst claims that she is receiving special attention from their mentor Cheryl Cole.
A source told The News Of The World:
“The housemates turned on Cher this week and it wasn’t pretty.
“They think she’s become too arrogant and big for her boots over the last couple of weeks.
“On Wednesday night there was a heated bust-up and it all became too much for Cher. She had to get away from them and go and see her family.

Check out the pictures from tonight’s American Anthem themed X Factor show.
Cher Lloyd took on ‘Empire State of Mind’ by Alicia Keys and Jay Z tonight. Afterwards Simon Cowell said:
Any other week I would call that an incredible performance but after last week I’m a little disappointed. Last week was 100% original this was a little bit copycat. I’m not blaming you but in the standard of the competition this year, to make the final you’ve got to be more original. I think your mentor got a little bit lazy.
Mary Byrne sang ‘There You’ll Be’ from the American war movie ‘Pearl Harbour.’ The performance was below par and afterwards the mum of one admitted:
I don’t know. I haven’t been in the zone at all this week. I’m quite low, and lonely for my daughter. I’m very nervous tonight...

Simon Cowell put it well tonight, when he described the American Anthem themed X Factor instalment as the ‘Matt and Rebecca show.’
The talented pair stunned the judges and the audience with their emotional performances this evening and Matt even managed to move Dannii Minogue to tears with his song.
Rebecca took to the stage first and delivered a flawless rendition of ‘Make You Feel My Love’ by Bob Dylan and more recently, Adele. After she sang Dannii Minogue raved:
An amazing performance, you sang it with such soul. I love listening to you and I also love watching you perform. It’s very subtle, very understated but very passionate and you feel something when you watch you perform.
Simon Cowell added:

Treyc Cohen took on a classic power ballad on tonight’s X Factor show.
For the American Anthem themed show, the 26 year old sang Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing’ from the 1998 movie ‘Armageddon’.
Dressed in a stunning off-white strapless maxi dress, we loved Treyc’s classy image tonight. It’s the best she’s looked on the show so far and we think the new do gave her a bit of a confidence boost, as her vocals matched the look and were really spot on. She did have a few wobbles but she absolutely nailed the big notes and though we still think she may struggle tomorrow, it won’t be because she sang badly.
Judges Comments:
Louis Walsh: Treyc you’re looking brilliant tonight. I love you’re attitude, no matter what happens to you, you always bounce back. No matter what song you’re given,...

Matt Cardle revisited his bootcamp performance on tonight’s X Factor show.
The former painter and decorator played it safe with his American Anthem and sang Roberta Flack’s ‘The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face’, just as he did in the initial auditions for the ITV series.
It may have been a safe choice but it worked for Matt tonight. His vocals were pure, smooth and beautiful and while we didn’t like his outfit and his strange beige trousers at all, the designer stubble and emotional tone completed the package for us. Best performance of his so far? It might just have been. Dannii Minogue obviously thought so too, as she was moved to tears by the time the tune concluded and all four judges awarded the singer with a standing ovation and some rapturous applause.

Wagner Carillho took on The King on tonight’s X Factor show.
For his American Anthem, the Brazilian singer gave his rendition of the Elvis classic, Viva Las Vegas fused with The Wonder Of You.
So on the plus side, he remembered his words which is no mean feat for Wagner. However, he barely sang one note in tune and the rhinestone suit did nothing to distract us from his awful, awful performance! His song seemed much longer than the others tonight…it was pure torture.
More shocking than his shockingly bad singing voice, was the fact that pervy old Wag was allowed to touch his backing dancers. We thought there was a strict ban on physical contact in place….he was even allowed to marry one of the hotties!
Judges Comments:

Like Aiden Grimshaw, Rebecca Ferguson played it loose with the American Anthem theme on tonight’s X Factor show.
She sang ‘Make You Feel My Love’, which was written by American singer/songwriter Bob Dylan but was made famous in the UK by Adele in 2008.
Becs stood on a podium, centre stage, dressed in a stunning sparkly maxi dress and the performance was all about the vocals for her. It was 100% flawless and the mum of two really couldn’t have done a better job with the song. Another amazing performance from Ms Ferguson! We loved it as did Cheryl Cole, who gave her a standing ovation at the end.
Judges Comments:
Louis Walsh: Rebecca people say that there’s no singing talent on this show, I hope they’re watching tonight. You stand out, you are special, you’re an amazing person and you have an effortless vocal.

Paije Richardson took a very different direction on tonight’s X Factor show.
Instead of his normal soul classics, for this evening’s American Anthem themed extravaganza, Paije fused The Monkees I’m A Believer and Hey Ya! by Outkast.
Good Points:
His funky yellow sweater!
The dancers and Paije’s interaction with them. We loved his energy tonight. He looked like he was having so much fun.
His smooth vocals…Paije has the most amazing tone and this tune displayed them well.
The transition between the old classic and modern hit. Genius move!
Bad Points
None! This is our favourite Paije performance to date!
Judges Comments:
Louis Walsh: Week five and you’re getting better. You seem to be having more fun I like that we’re starting to see your personality. You’re like a little Lenny henry.

Aiden Grimshaw took on a classic Prince song on tonight’s X Factor show.
The Blackpool singer played it loose with the American Anthem theme and sang ‘Nothing Compares To You’, which was originally written and recorded by Minnesota born Prince but was made famous in the UK by Irish singer Sinead O’Connor.
Aiden looked even more handsome than usual on stage tonight and we loved the new hairstyle he had going on! This song was a favourite of ours and we really enjoyed Mr A’s take on it. He even smiled at various points throughout and we bet that was planned especially for Cheryl’s benefit…..she can’t call him moody now!

Katie Waissel decided to take her performance more seriously on tonight’s X Factor show.
Instead of a quirky light hearted number, the 24 year old took on the gutsy ‘Don’t Speak’ by No Doubt for her American Anthem.
Of her song choice, mentor Cheryl Cole said:
“This week I’ve chosen a far more cool song for Katie.”
Styled to look incredibly like Gwen Stefani, Katie emerged with Big hair and skintight leather trousers. Her performance wasn’t awful, it wasn’t brilliant. It was all a bit blah. We loved the footage playing on the screen behind her, it looked like Katie’s very own music video but that was the best bit of the song for us. Waissel wasn’t at all memorable tonight, she could very easily end up in the bottom two tomorrow….again!

Mary Byrne sang a classic tearjerker on tonight’s X Factor show.
The 50 year old mum of one was given Faith Hill’s ‘There You’ll Be,’ for her American Anthem. The tune became famous after it’s inclusion on the soundtrack for the 2001 American war movie ‘Pearl Harbour.’
Weirdly, Mary who can normally sing anything started the song with quite obvious tuning issues. We don’t know if they key was an awkward one for her or if there was a problem with her ear piece but to be honest, tonight Mary was worse than Jedward ever were! She knew it too and it was an uncomfortable performance from beginning to end. Cringe, cringe, cringe!
Judges Comments:
Dannii Minogue: What was really interesting tonight is that we’re down to the top ten and you can see what it means to everyone. Tonight it didn’t feel like you were inside the song.

X Factor bosses have reportedly decided to cancel Big band Week on this year’s series, because it doesn’t suit some of the contestants.
The theme, which normally sees contestants sing swing numbers with a full orchestra, has been used on the show since 2006 but producers were said to be worried that the old style numbers would work against acts like Cher Lloyd and One Direction.
“While Big Band would suit Rebecca Ferguson or Wagner Carrilho, it could be a death knell to One Direction or Cher, whose main talent is rapping,” a source told The Sun.
The show continues tomorrow night with an American Anthem theme. For a list of song spoilers click here.

I am quite fun. Everyone keeps saying I’m intense, but I’m not that intense. I just pull faces sometimes.
