E.L. James' original "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy is undoubtedly the most successful piece of fanfiction ever published. James turned the teen-friendly romance between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen in Stephenie Meyer's wildly popular "Twilight" franchise into an erotic reverie explored by the mysterious (and quite wealthy) entrepreneur Christian Grey and college journalist Kate Kavanaugh. It was a Bdsm gateway drug that opened up a healthy portal for kink-curious young adults. You didn't have to feel like a freak for wanting to do what conservative society deemed freaky.
Was it good literature? Does it matter? James' novels have sold hundreds of millions of copies and been translated into 52 different languages. They are adored by people who never knew they wanted to see Bella and Edward engage in consensual sadomasochism. I am happy they have these stories in their lives. What matters, at least when it comes to my bailiwick,...

We are prompting discussions with our new ‘opinion piece’ section titled Shock & Cheese and in this second article the discussion is about inclusion/belonging in the horror community.
The horror genre is thought, among other things (they are always called things) to give its audience a cathartic experience of release. I heard this comment on a recent award program broadcast on a streaming service that went further to say this helped with viewer’s mental health allowing them to cope with the troubles that we all know have manifested because of the Pandemic and other life factors.
I find that a hard sell as I have yet to understand how watching someone plunge a blade into someone or eat someone alive allows someone to cope with the fact that they cannot meet their friends at a park. That is a somewhat simplistic example of what others may feel in their lives as well,...

Happily ever after isn’t a concept often found in horror, which makes for a perfect antidote to the saccharine sentimentality of Valentine’s Day. Since love is in the air this week, this week’s streaming picks highlight the downside to romance: the brutal heartbreaks.
Because it’s horror, it’s never as straightforward as a breakup. Psychosis, body horror transformations, and death are some of the causes behind this week’s doomed romance titles.
Here’s where you can stream them this week.

The Fly – HBO Max
The Fly remains one of horror’s most tragic love stories. The initial sparks between journalist Veronica and quirky scientist Seth give way to a full-blown relationship. But Seth harbors some insecurity toward Veronica’s relationship with her editor Stathis Borans, a former lover who still has feelings for her. That insecurity...

Romance is dead! Messed Up Puzzles and Cult Epics bring you the first ever series of jigsaw puzzles for necrophiles. Nekromantik and Nekromantik 2: The Return Of The Loving Dead join the Messed Up family as Nos. 7 and 8 respectively. Each one features 1000 corpse-riding pieces cut from the original art by Andreas Marschall.
For the uninitiated, Nekromantik concerns the ménage a trois between Rob, his girlfriend, and the corpse he brings home from his job cleaning up after grisly accidents. This doesn’t end as well as one might think. In Nekromantik 2, a beautiful, grave-digging nurse explores her necrophilia and has to choose between the living and the dead with regard to her love life. Banned in Germany upon their release,...

PUCHON, South Korea -- In a much more low-key and thoughtful opening ceremony than previous years, the eighth Puchon International Film Festival kicked off Thursday evening. In keeping with the festival's fantasy/horror theme Stuart Gordon's King of the Ants opened the event, which runs July 15-24 and overall will screen 83 feature films and 178 shorts from 32 countries. Other special sections include programs on early Japanese animation, Troma Studios, later Shaw Brothers films, independent pioneer Amos Vogel, and the works of Jurg Buttgereit (Nekromantik). This year also marks the debut of a small film market and the European Fantastic Film Festival's Asian film award.

SEOUL, South Korea -- After broadening its program to feature films for the whole family, the Puchon Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) took a swing back toward the daring and outrageous in a program unveiled Tuesday at the Kumho Art Gallery in downtown Seoul. The 8th go-round for PiFan will feature Trauma Studio, the extreme films of Jorg Buttgereit (Nekromantik) and movies by independent icon Amos Vogel. At the same time, there will also be special sections on early Japanese animation and the later films of the Shaw Brothers. "It's chaotic, and I mean that in a good way," festival director Kim Hong-joon said. All told, this year's PiFan will screen 83 feature-length films and 178 shorts from 32 countries during its 10-day run from July 15-24.
