One of the downsides of streaming’s cord-cutting era has been how hard it is to stumble on a great movie midway through. You know the joy of which we speak. After a long day at work or school, a moment to unwind turns into discovering one of your favorite flicks, that one you’ve probably seen a hundred times, is playing right now on cable. And wouldn’t you know it, you’ve come across it right at your favorite bit.
Before you know it, you spend the next 90 minutes catching up on a film you already have half committed to memory. It’s a perhaps uniquely dated phenomenon, but a great one for those of us who have entire personal libraries of movies that we may never have seen from beginning to end. I spent years, for example, convinced Con Air started with Nic Cage enunciating, “I said...

The late, great Ray Liotta had a lot of memorable credits to his name throughout his career, but it's probably safe to say his best role was as Henry Hill in Martin Scorsese's "Goodfellas." In fact, we said just that when we ranked the actor's career right here. Acting against heavy hitters like Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, Liotta had to essentially carry the entire movie — he's in practically every single scene and serves as the narrator and guide into the world of the mafia that Scorsese was presenting (adapted from the nonfiction book "Wiseguy" by Nicholas Pileggi). Henry is a gangster; a criminal; a violent man. In a lesser actor's hands, this character might be detestable. But Liotta is able to make us have sympathy for Henry; we're caught up in his story, and when the third act of the film brings the character to the lowest moments of his life,...

Imagine what it was like in the 1990s -- and being constantly told and reminded that Tarantino was revolutionizing cinema.
Not only was Quentin Tarantino's indie project being worshiped by film critics in 1994, but it was also being staged as the antithesis to the year's other subversive comedy, Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks.
Forrest Gump represented traditional values and innocence. (Though screenwriter Eric Roth nor Winston Groom ever intended the character that way)
Pulp Fiction represented cynicism and brutality triumphing over good intentions. It was an Oscar race partly conceived by Miramax and Harvey Weinstein, who, believe it or not, used to be good at other things besides...well, you know.
It was impossible for Gen X not to embrace Pulp Fiction as their generation's movie and the one that most spoke to their maturing culture. Maybe amid the media storm, I was the only one who saw what was happening.

Fierce protests: The 2024 Cannes Film Festival opens in less than a fortnight and is once again set to be the backdrop to fierce French labor protests. Zac revealed earlier this week that a collection of around 200 French film festival workers — a combination of Cannes workers and workers from other festivals across France — are planning protests during the event over pay. The group’s frustrations are two-fold: they are first rallying against the pay packages they receive from their employers, which they say are inadequate and do not account for arduous overtime hours frequently clocked due to job demands, while the second bone of contention is France’s unique unemployment insurance program for entertainment workers and technicians. Exclusive: Goodfellas has acquired international rights for French director Gaël Morel’s drama To Live, To Die, To Live Again set against the AIDS epidemic in the early 1990s, ahead of its world premiere in Cannes.
Rising French actors Victor Belmondo, Lou Lampros and Théo Christine co-star as a romantically entwined trio whose youthful dalliance takes them into life-changing territory with the arrival of AIDS. While they expect the worse, the destiny of each character will take an unexpected turn.
Morel has taken inspiration from his own teenage fears around AIDS in the 1990s as well as research he did for a planned documentary on people who caught the virus and were saved at the last minute by the development of effective antiretroviral therapies.
Michèle Halberstadt and Laurent Pétin produced the film under the banner of their Paris-based film company Arp Sélection, which will also distribute the feature in France.

2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994, winning the Palm d’Or and cementing the filmmaker’s career in the process. The Los Angeles-set crime anthology with intertwined stories not only was behind the career revival and rebranding of John Travolta but also helped elevate Samuel L. Jackson from character actor to a bonafide star.

Do you remember the very first moment when you realized a movie could be far more than just a brief, amiable diversion from the temporal slog of life as an extant human? That first moment you realized film could be art capable of providing a fully nourishing spiritual experience? That perhaps even made you want to become a filmmaker in order to provide that experience to someone else? Just as important: Do you recall the most recent movie that gave you that same feeling or fit of inspiration? Well, in this week’s Survey Says that’s just what we asked: What’s the first movie you saw that you considered a masterpiece… and the most recent?

For several years now, Quentin Tarantino has been adamant that he plans to make a single 10th and final movie — which will no longer be The Movie Critic. Some of his fans were relieved when this news broke yesterday. The Movie Critic originally sounded like a nostalgic character study (“more epilogue-y,” as Tarantino once put it), while his fans particularly love the director’s more pulply, genre-driven fair. The result would have almost certainly been great. But would it have been great enough to be Tarantino’s last film?
More details about this decision are likely still to come. Still, one wonders: Would Tarantino have abandoned the movie if there wasn’t so much riding on it? His many statements about quitting film directing have suggested he’s extremely focused on protecting his legacy, which seems like a downright masochistic way of putting an enormous amount pressure on yourself. "Killers of the Flower Moon" may have ended with a bittersweet final coda from Martin Scorsese, but the acclaimed octogenarian director clearly still has plenty of future projects on his plate. Variety just broke the news that Scorsese apparently has a Frank Sinatra biopic in the works, and while the filmmaker's reps declined to comment, the outlet claims he has none other than frequent leading man Leonardo DiCaprio in mind to play the lead. The filmmaker's take on the famous crooner's life also reportedly will include a major part for Jennifer Lawrence, who sources say will play Sinatra's second wife, Ava Gardner.
According to the trade outlet, the Sinatra picture isn't exactly a done deal: Variety notes that Sinatra's daughter Tina, who controls the late singer's estate, hasn't given her blessing for the movie yet. Still, studios including Sony and Apple are reportedly interested in the as-yet-untitled film, which...

The Film Vault range of physical media releases has previously seen much-loved films presented in deluxe packaging, with assorted extra materials in the box. They’re on the pricey side, but there’s no denying the love that’s gone into putting them together.
Now, a slightly more economic range of reissues for the seven films in the range so far is incoming, which sees the same movies now arriving in fresh Steelbook packaging. The distinctive artwork from the earlier releases is included, and there’s brand new art on the reverse of each as well. The artwork has been designed by Matt Ferguson and Florey of Vice Press.

Martin Scorsese’s history with the Academy Awards hasn’t always been cheerful, but the veteran filmmaker managed to grab one for The Departed in 2007. The Boston-set crime thriller exposed the many institutional problems with crime fighting. By the end of the film, all the ‘rats’ end up dead, sending a clear message about the film’s themes to the viewers. However, Warner Bros. wasn’t exactly thrilled that Scorsese killed off the stars of the film.
Martin Scorsese on the sets of The Departed with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson
In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Billy Costigan and Matt Damon’s Colin Sullivan were working as moles in the Irish mob and the Massachusetts State Police respectively. Both stars were assets to WB if the movie were ever made into a franchise, but Scorsese had very different plans for them.

Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of F.W. Murnau’s silent classic Nosferatu is one of the more highly anticipated horror movies of the year, and the lucky folks at CinemaCon got a look at an exclusive first look at the chilling production.
The first look at Nosferatu was suitably terrifying with a heavy gothic tone. Classic-looking tall, dark castles, scurrying rats, blood gushing from necks, and full-on bleak horror. The footage included looks at Lily-Rose Depp (The Idol) and Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) but sadly only featured quick glimpses of Count Orlock himself. Perhaps that’s for the best, but I can’t wait to see Bill Skarsgard (Boy Kills World) disappear into the character.

Back in 1990, Kevin Costner directed, produced, and starred in an epic war film which also happened to be his directorial debut – Dances with Wolves. Little did he know that the film would go on to receive a whopping twelve nominations at the 63rd Academy Awards and win seven out of those. Clearly, the film was loved by many.

However, films about war often have a few inaccuracies here and there even after filmmakers try their absolute best. Dances with Wolves is no different. Last year, a Civil War historian picked a few war films apart, explaining what actually happened in reality. When he came to Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves, he proved a very common misconception wrong.

Since his debut in indie film Together For Days in 1972, the 74-year-old Jackson has been in more than 100 films that have collectively grossed more than $27 billion, making him the highest-grossing live-action actor of all time as of 2021, according to The Numbers.
In his career, he’s been in some of the most iconic films ever, as well, including Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing (1989), Mo’ Better Blues (1990) and Jungle Fever (1991), Jurassic Park (1993), A Time to Kill (1996), Black Snake Moan (2006), Goodfellas (1990), Die Hard With A Vengeance (1995) and the unforgettable Snakes On A Plane (2006).

Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. From comedy classics, to bruising turn-of-the-century tales of brutality and crime, to contemporary subversions of the genre formula, we’ve covered all bases. Diarra From Detroit is, at various points, a hard-boiled mystery, a quarter-life crisis comedy, a complicated love triangle (that’s occasionally a quadrangle), and an ensemble hangout show about a group of longtime friends. Some of these elements in theory make sense together — though in theory they should not all fit within the same series. But the reason Diarra, which debuted last week on the BET+ streaming service, is among this year’s most pleasant TV surprises is how much it all makes sense when you watch it.

After months of testing, Disney has made it official with the launch of Hulu on Disney+. This new one-app experience will bring a significant portion of Hulu’s on-demand and next-day streaming libraries to the company’s flagship streaming service Disney+. While the beta tests that launched in December gave many subscribers an opportunity to check out what this new evolution of Disney streaming was all about, now that it is live for Disney Bundle subscribers in the United States, The Streamable is giving you a first look at the refreshed platform and diving into what content is and isn’t available.
Hulu on Disney+ brings thousands of new general entertainment titles to Disney+ for the first time. Disney Bundle subscribers can now stream titles from numerous non-Disney-owned networks.

Not feeling conflicted enough today? Martin Scorsese is making and hosting a show on Fox News Channel’s streaming service Fox Nation.
The series is an eight-part docudrama slated for November 2024. May we present: “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints.”
Each hour-long episode will explore “the remarkable stories of eight men and women who risked everything to embody humanity’s most noble and complex trait — faith,” in Fox Nation’s words. Them’s the saints.
“Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints” was developed by Scorsese for Lionsgate Alternative Television. It was created by Matti Leshem. The docuseries is written by the frequent Scorsese collaborator Kent Jones; it will be directed by Elizabeth Chomko.
Scorsese and Leshem executive produce, as do Julie Yorn, Rick Yorn, Christopher Donnelly, Yoshi Stone, Craig Piligian, David Ellender, and Matt Loze. In addition to Lionsgate, the series was produced by Sikelia Productions, Weimaraner Republic Pictures, Lbi Entertainment, and Halcyon Studios.

When you think of the great directors in cinema history – Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, etc. – chances are the first films that come to mind are Goodfellas, Jaws and Vertigo. But every brilliant filmmaker has their duds. Now, Rolling Stone – you know, the publication that doesn’t think Roseanne and Bill Cosby had historic shows just because of their wrongdoings – has put out a list of the 50 worst movies by some of the most renowned directors…And yes, they have missed the mark considerably.
In the list, titled “50 Terrible Movies by Great Directors”, there are plenty of bottom-barrel films, those that are absolutely anomalies in otherwise remarkable careers. We wouldn’t argue that man-child family comedy Jack (#1) isn’t Francis Ford Coppola’s worst movie or that Rob Reiner’s North (#2) wasn’t worthy of Roger Ebert’s famed “hated, hated, hated, hated, hated” review. Six months after world-premiering to poor reviews at the Venice Film Festival, Roman Polanski’s latest film “The Palace” has been acquired by a French distribution company, Swashbuckler Films.
The Paris-based banner, which specializes in classic movies, is hoping to release “The Palace” on May 15. The company’s owner, Sebastien Tiveyrat, told Variety he hasn’t yet obtained the exhibition visa from the National Film Board and hasn’t started contacting exhibitors in France to book theaters.
Although Polanski’s inclusion at the Venice festival sparked a controversy due to the fact that he’s still currently facing sexual assault allegations, “The Palace” sold across many territories, including Germany, Russia, Hungary, Estonia, Bulgaria and French-speaking Switzerland where it came out between September and January. The black comedy will next open in Portugal on April 4. Goodfellas handles international sales on the movie.

The ever-busy Japanese character actor Tadanobu Asano — currently having a moment as one of the stars of Disney’s hit samurai series Shōgun — has joined the cast of Thai director Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s upcoming culinary thriller Morte Cucina. The actor and director last collaborated two decades ago on the romantic crime film Last Life in the Universe (2003), which was Thailand’s official submission to the Oscars that year and won Asano the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival.
Set in contemporary Bangkok, Morte Cucina follows a talented young female chef named Sao who has a chance encounter with a man who sexually abused her when she was a teen. “Using her talents in the kitchen, Sao sets her plan of revenge in motion — achieving a rather unexpected result,” the film’s logline reads.

Michael Imperioli is reflecting on his first Hollywood gig, one that made him believe he was a “horrible” actor.
“The Sopranos” actor recalled during an interview with The New Yorker his movie debut in 1989 film “Lean on Me,” directed by John Avildsen. According to Imperioli, Avildsen left a less-than-ideal impression, and was “not very nice” to the child actors on set. Imperioli was one of the extras who had a line in a crowd sequence; his scene was ultimately cut from the final film.
“My first experience on a movie was ‘Lean on Me,’ which was directed by John Avildsen, who did ‘Rocky.’ And he was very impatient. He was not very nice, to be honest,” Imperioli said. “I think he was overwhelmed because there were, like, a thousand high-school kids in this. He made me audition in the cafeteria during the lunch break with, like, hundreds of kids. It was horrible.

After actors reach a certain level of fame in the film industry, it becomes difficult for them to take on supporting roles in projects thanks to their roaring popularity. However, Samuel L. "All in the Family" might've been Norman Lear's finest half-hour as a sitcom producer, but I'm not sure he ever put a funnier show on the airwaves than "The Jeffersons." For 11 seasons, Sherman Hemsley's dry-cleaning magnate George Jefferson and Isabel Sanford's good-hearted Louise "Weezy" Jefferson led a stellar cast that delivered edgy-for-network-television laughs revolving around race, class, gender, and whatever happened to be grinding the hot-headed George's gears that particular week. It was the African-American answer to "All in the Family" (on which the characters of George and Weezy originated), and might actually be more shocking today for its fearless deployment of the n-word (particularly early in the series' run).
And if you're making a list of the most memorable theme songs in television history, "The Jeffersons" better be in the top five. Anyone who grew up watching the show in prime time or via syndication should...

While the versatile filmmaker Martin Scorsese has helmed various genres, the gangster drama is the one that put him on the map, starting with the Harvey Keitel and Robert De Niro starrer Mean Streets. The film’s success led to him being the master of the genre with films like Casino and The Irishman.
However, before he became the master of the genre, he was reportedly apprehensive about following through on one of his best films, Goodfellas. Scorsese was reportedly hesitant to tackle the genre again after Mean Streets and reportedly went to The Godfather star Marlon Brando, who surprisingly advised against pursuing it.

25 years ago, television changed forever. It was at the start of 1999 that HBO aired the first episode of The Sopranos – the groundbreaking gangster drama that took the cinematic tropes of The Godfather and Goodfellas and turned them longform. With its then-contemporary depiction of a crime family – both the underworld operation run by James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano, and the domestic Soprano household – facing up to the realities of 21st Century life and a tidal shift in mobster generations, it was both a deconstruction of and gripping addition to the gangster canon. In the likes of Tony, and Lorraine Bracco’s therapist Dr. Melfi, and Steven Van Zandt’s hard-headed Silvio Dante, and Edie Falco’s long-suffering wife Carmela Soprano, it introduced some of the greatest characters to ever grace the small screen.

Sunday saw the 96th Annual Oscars ceremony broadcast live across the world, and for UK audiences it saw the show broadcast on ITV. There is lots to be said about this year’s Oscars, from winners and losers, to poor broadcasting panels – it is safe to say the award season gave us everything we’re used to.
For the UK the show has found a new home. Previously playing exclusively on Sky, this year it was broadcast by ITV. Now, the new home for the awards show has some things it needs to get right, ultimately to provide insight and entertainment, throughout the breaks in between the Oscars broadcast. Unfortunately, many viewers were left unsatisfied and...

Known for her roles in Euphoria and The Handmaid’s Tale, Sydney Sweeney recently opened up during an SXSW Q&a session about her dream director. No, he is not Quentin Tarantino or Christopher Nolan; rather, she would prefer to collaborate with Martin Scorsese.
This may surprise some people considering Nolan’s standing as a visionary director, who recently won the Oscar for Oppenheimer. That being said, the two-time Emmy-nominated actress, 26, might have been drawn in by Scorsese’s storytelling and character development.
However, her admiration for Scorsese might not necessarily lead to any Academy Award wins. Despite being regarded as one of the greatest directors of all time, the Taxi Driver director has been snubbed by the Academy on several occasions.
