Great Cuban war movie of the Angola campaign
Roldy7 January 2006
This is a great movie, it has a feeling of "Apocalipse Now". It tells the story of Cuban soldiers in Angola guarding a convoy along a lonely but dangerous African road. Excellent cast, real uniforms and weaponry, and most importantly: interesting and engaging characters. The movie has touching moments, and funny ones too, especially the recruits peeping into the actress' tent (Nancy Gonzalez); and the reprieve by their superior. If you look past the communist propaganda it becomes a classic. Watch it if you can, it was filmed entirely in Angola, and all the extras were actual Angolan and Cuban soldiers, the director had perfect timing as the Cuban troops returned to their island on May of 1991. Thousands of Cubans lost their lives fighting alongside their African allies against South African troops and Savimbi's reactionary UNITA.
