Burgess Meredith had a damn good run. He became a Broadway and film star almost simultaneously in the 1930s via his starring role in the Sacco and Vanzetti-based drama "Winterset," and turned in an unforgettable portrayal of George opposite Lon Chaney Jr.'s Lennie in Lewis Milestone's 1939 adaptation of "Of Mice and Men." He worked steadily, tirelessly until his death at the age of 89 in 1997. He was the Penguin on ABC's "Batman," the Italian Stallion's gruff-but-lovable trainer Mickey Goldmill in five "Rocky" movies, and Jack Lemon's surly Pops in the "Grumpy Old Men" movies.
And he was fortunate enough to appear in four particularly memorable "Twilight Zone" episodes.
Meredith's finest half-hour in the land of both shadow and substance, or things and ideas was obviously "Time Enough at Last," where he stars as a bibliophile who survives a nuclear apocalypse (and winds up wishing he didn't). The...

Perhaps it is somewhat ironic that a story about relationships or friendships also deals with the aspects which keep people apart. Some of the most iconic works in literature, for example, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” or “Of Mice and Men” on the one hand tell a compelling story about camaraderie and friendship, but on the other hand, through the points which get in the way of two people, authors Mark Twain and John Steinbeck talk about issues like class and how society treats those who are outside the norm. In his 1970 feature “The End of the Track” Taiwanese director Mou Tun-fei uses a similar approach, since the story about the friendship of two teenage boys can, in many ways, be regarded as a metaphor for issues such as social hierarchy, the idea of the social outsider and the high pressure to succeed which puts a great burden on young people.

"The Twilight Zone" may have been an anthology series that featured a new cast of actors every single week, but it had a star. Series creator Rod Serling, an Emmy Award-winning screenwriter who personally wrote 92 episodes of the 156-episode series, was also the show's headliner. Every episode began with Serling introducing the story, teasing the unexpected ironies that would befall the latest characters. His pleasingly gravelly voice and serious business suit gave him an on-air authority usually reserved for news anchors, which gave a powerful legitimacy to the strange tales that were about to unfold.
Rod Serling was indelibly linked to "The Twilight Zone" in front of and behind the camera and was a driving force behind its bizarre tales of sci-fi and supernatural. So it might stand to reason that Serling, as a producer and a frontman for the series, wouldn't play favorites with the many episodes of the show.

Pamela Blair, who originated the role of the surgically enhanced Valerie Clark in the Broadway smash A Chorus Line, died Sunday at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, following a lengthy illness. She was 73.
Her death was reported by friends on social media, including her A Chorus Line co-star Baayork Lee. “I am very sad to say my Sagittarian sister Pam Blair has gone to play with her [A Chorus Line] colleagues among the clouds,” wrote Lee in a Facebook post. Sharing a Dec. 5 birthday, the two actors “always wrote to one another no matter where we were on that day,” Lee said, recalling how Blair ” brought the house down every night” with the showstopping performance of “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three.”

Rico Verhoeven’s Dutch-produced acting debut is a slapdash meeting of illogical storylines amid meaningless plot points
This hapless Dutch-produced thriller almost redeems itself with a decent final sequence staged in the neon-doused John Wick style, but it is too little, too late. Gigantic 6ft 5in kickboxer Rico Verhoeven blows his shot at action stardom with a showing of anti-charisma best described as if Lenny from Of Mice and Men had become a special forces operative. And the Amsterdam tourist board – for whom this at least lustrously shot film serves as a long commercial – must hold serious dirt on Frank Grillo for him to have signed up. Even by his snap-your-hand-off-for-a-paycheck standards, he has a binfire on his hands.
Verhoeven plays Matteo, former crack point man for a tactical unit of vague remit, who is licking his wounds after a hostage rescue at the German national opera goes south and his boss is killed.

[Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for the “Mrs. Davis” series finale — Episode 8, “The Final Intercut: So I’m Your Horse” — including the ending.]
Throughout “Mrs. Davis,” the titular app out to save or destroy mankind is never thoroughly explained. We know it’s relied upon by billions of users worldwide. We know it’s a piece of artificial intelligence so advanced it appears all-knowing and all-powerful. We know many consider it responsible for ending wars and famines, we know it grants wishes, and we know its ultimate gift is a pair of digital wings, which anoint the angelic owners as top-tier users.
What we don’t know is where it came from, who made it, or what it was made to do. Given everything else going on during the first seven episodes of “Mrs. Davis” — a quest for the Holy Grail, episode-long flashbacks about a sneaker commercial, this guy, this other guy, and that whole thing with...

With its list of new releases for May 2023, Amazon Prime Video is increasing its global reach.
The streamer’s biggest original offering this month is a German series. Hohlbeins’ – The Gryphon, based on the works of Wolfgang Holhlbein, will present a sprawling fantasy tale about three teens discovering a fantastical world called The Black Tower where “the Gryphon, a world-devouring monster, mercilessly subjugates all living creatures.”
The only other original title of note in May is Freevee comedy Primo on the 19th. Written by author and journalist Shea Serrano and produced by Michael Schur (The Good Place), this coming-of-age series will follow a teenager balancing “college aspirations, societal expectations, and a hectic home life on the south side of San Antonio.”

As an avid moviegoer, I have always been fascinated with the life and career of John Malkovich. His versatility as an actor is truly remarkable, having portrayed various characters in both theatre and Hollywood. John G. Avildsen's "Rocky" was only one of three films to star actor Burgess Meredith in 1976. That year he also appeared in the horror film "Burnt Offerings" and the Irish short film "Circasia" which also starred Sean Connery, Eric Clapton, John Huston, and Shirley MacLaine. Meredith was one of those lucky character actors who seemingly never stopped working. His career began in 1935, when he played the uncredited "Flop House Bum" in the Noël Coward film "The Scoundrel." Meredith gained mainstream attention when he appeared in Lewis Milestone's 1939 adaptation of "Of Mice and Men," and had been a showbiz darling ever after. A quick look through his filmography reveals that he had at least one film or television project every year from 1935 through 1995. Meredith passed away in 1997 at the age of 89 with hundreds of acting credits to his name.

When we consider John Malkovich playing a parody of himself in "Being John Malkovich," there comes the question: Why John Malkovich? Why not "Being Kurt Russell" or "Being Alan Rickman," for instance? Screenwriter Charlie Kaufman answered this, saying there was no other actor in mind when he wrote the script, due to Malkovich's "quality of unknowability" (via Rolling Stone).
And there we have the main draw of John Malkovich as a Hollywood actor, a visage that is instantly recognizable yet as inscrutable as the great stone faces of Easter Island. There isn't anyone else remotely like him, which adds to his enigma. Although he had hair when starting out, he's better known for that magnificent bald dome that hints at a mercurial intellect. Beneath that, there is the interrogative, simian brow that can measure degrees of rage or contempt by how many lines Malkovich furrows into it; then the beady yet penetrating eyes,...

When you think of Michael Madsen, what's the first image that comes to mind? Is it Reservoir Dogs' Mr. Blonde dancing to "Stuck in the Middle with You" while holding a severed ear? Maybe it's the washed-up assassin Budd burying Uma Thurman's The Bride alive? Whatever Madsen character you're seeing, there's a good chance he's not a hero. Madsen has made a career out of playing black hats and evil men.
According to Madsen, that has more to do with Hollywood typecasting than any preference to play sleazy roles (via The After Movie Diner). Before he made a name for himself by embodying quietly lethal but outwardly slick antagonists, he dreamed of portraying the good guy. But after his role in "Reservoir Dogs," every script that followed wanted to bring out the worst in Madsen. His notoriety hinges on the unsavory characters he's played -- he's even been introduced as Mr.

“It was about choosing light and also about having faith and working through fear,” says Ron Cephas Jones of his recent role in “Clyde’s” on Broadway. The Lynn Nottage play cast the veteran actor as Montrellous, an expert sandwich maker who serves as a mentor-like figure to the other kitchen staff at the titular truckstop diner. Jones describes working on the play as a “joy” as he thinks back on “all the little metaphors” for light conquering darkness which he found in the script. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Jones has known Pulitzer Prize-winner Nottage for about 20 years, and despite many workshops and readings, the timing never worked out to star in a full production until now. “I didn’t really have to read the script to say yes,” admits the actor.

On March 2, legendary actor James Earl Jones, 91, made history as the second Black actor to have a Broadway theater named in his honor. In celebration of Jones's "lifetime of immense contributions to Broadway and the entire artistic community," the 110-year-old Cort Theatre - previously named for vaudeville performer John Cort - will be renamed The James Earl Jones Theater, according to The New York Times.
"The Shubert Organization is so incredibly honored to put James - an icon in the theatre community, the Black community, and the American community - forever in Broadway's lights," said Robert E. Wankel, CEO and board chair at Shubert. "That James deserves to have his name immortalized on Broadway is without question."

Joe Dante's "Gremlins" is one of the greatest holiday horror films in history and is partially responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating. "Gremlins 2: A New Batch" on the other hand, is a chaotic nightmare of fun and absurdity with cartoon-comedy, slapstick violence, and parodies of "Rambo," "The Wizard of Oz," "The Phantom of the Opera," "Marathon Man," "Of Mice and Men," Donald Trump, and even "Gremlins" itself. The movie is so absurd that one of the best "Key and Peele" sketches in the show's history is about the brainstorming session that led to "Gremlins 2." I'm a staunch defender of this ridiculous film, because...

Lewis Milestone directed this poetic, optimistic ode to the American infantryman, a ‘lone patrol’ saga that emphasizes its soldiers’ hopes and fears. The lineup of fresh, eager acting talent is remarkable: Dana Andrews, Richard Conte, George Tyne, John Ireland, Lloyd Bridges, Sterling Holloway, Norman Lloyd, Herbert Rudley, Richard Benedict, Huntz Hall, James Cardwell, Steve Brodie. Voiceovers and ‘ballads’ give a six-mile beachhead incursion the tone of a spiritual rumination. A beautiful full film restoration brings the image back to prime quality. The controversial filmmakers and the unusual production circumstances are covered in Alan K. Rode’s commentary.

Let’s shout our approval of this foursome of vintage noirs, all of which have been scarce since Eddie Muller was old enough to rob candy stores. Three Paramounts and one Universal give us four notable directors and a gallery of attractive stars, including a swoon-worthy array of actresses: Marta Toren, Loretta Young, Susan Hayward, Gail Russell, Frances Farmer and Marina Berti. The selection includes one of the key ‘just prior to the official style’ titles, a thriller with supernatural overtones, a ‘woman in jeopardy’ story and a gangster tale reportedly inspired by Lucky Luciano.

George Segal, whose long career included playing Albert “Pops” Solomon on “The Goldbergs,” and garnering an Oscar nom for supporting actor for “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” died Tuesday. He was 87.
His wife Sonia announced his death, saying, “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.”
Segal’s longtime manager Abe Hoch said, “I am saddened by the fact that my close friend and client of many years has passed away. I will miss his warmth, humor, camaraderie and friendship. He was a wonderful human.”
Some of the top directors of the 1960s and ’70s, including Robert Altman, Mike Nichols, Paul Mazursky and Sidney Lumet cast Segal for his gently humorous everyman quality, and he often played an unlucky-in-love professional or a writer who gets in over his head.

1943, 1944, 1945 / 63, 64, 61, 62, 66 Min. / 1.33:1
Starring Lon Chaney Jr., J. Carroll Naish, Evelyn Ankers
Cinematography by Virgil Miller, Paul Ivano, Maury Gertsman
Directed by Reginald LeBorg, Harold Young, John Hoffman, Wallace Fox
For the first eight years of his career, Lon Chaney Jr. was just a face in the crowd—that all changed with 1939’s Of Mice and Men. The role of Lennie Small, a man-child who didn’t know his own strength, elevated the 33 year old actor to stardom but also typecast him as the perennial victim of circumstances—a B movie Hamlet. Offscreen, Chaney behaved more like Falstaff—his favorite pastimes were drinking, brawling, and more drinking. If Hollywood began to view him as a loose cannon, the actor sealed his own fate when he signed on as Larry Talbot, a discontented aristocrat who was more at home baying at the moon.

This article contains spoilers for episode 3 of The Stand.
After spending much of episodes 1 and 2 with important characters such as Stu Redman (James Marsden), Frannie Goldsmith (Odessa Young), Harold Lauder (Owen Teague) and Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo), the new miniseries version of Stephen King’s The Stand brings in or fills out the backgrounds of several more key personnel in episode 3, titled “Blank Pages.”
This episode of the nine-part CBS All Access limited series introduces the characters of Nick Andros (Brazilian actor Henry Zaga from The New Mutants), Ray Brentner (Irene Bedard) and Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke), all of whom play a major role in King’s tale — and all of whom have received a fairly significant overhaul for the new adaptation.
In King’s book and the 1994 miniseries, Ray is Ralph Brentner, a physically imposing yet good-natured 45-year-old farmer from Oklahoma and a key leader of the Boulder Free Zone.

Max Winkler’s “Jungleland” is a throwback to the kind of character-driven, road movies that Hollywood hasn’t made much since the glory days of the 1970s moviemaking.
It’s the story of two drifter brothers who are so desperate to escape their dead-end lives that they accept an offer to ferry a young woman (Jessica Barden) across the country to a degenerate criminal. The film, which opens Friday, stars Jack O’Connell as Walter “Lion” Kaminsky, a bare-knuckle boxer, and Charlie Hunnam as Stanley Kaminsky, his corner-man and manager, who is better at plunging the family into debt than scoring big paydays.
On the eve of the film’s release, Winkler spoke to Variety about the movies that inspired “Jungleland,” why “King Arthur” convinced him to cast Hunnam as the down-and-out Stanley, and his go-for-broke effort to score the rights to a Bruce Springsteen song.

For some, he will always be Pukey Nicholls, the troubled skinhead from Shane Meadows’ This Is England. For other equally early adopters across the pond, he’s James “Cookie Monster” Cook in the British teen show Skins. Maybe you discovered him in the intense prison drama Starred Up, standing toe to toe with Ben Mendelsohn, or first noticed him as the lead in Unbroken, Angelina Jolie’s biopic on lost-at-sea Olympian Louis Zamperini that was supposed to kick Jack O’Connell up the A-list. Oh, and the wounded outlaw in Netflix’s Western miniseries Godless?...

A Simple Plan is a thriller of uncommon resonance. There are guns, murder and
betrayal, but Sam Raimi’s film is really about happiness and its relation to
money. For most, happiness and money is a struggle of career and family, habits
and foresight. But what if you were to simply find a gym bag full of drug money?
And what if you found this treasure with a relative and mutual friend who you
just couldn’t trust? This is the ‘what if’ conceit that will have you contemplating
your own reaction to such a crazy, life changing dilemma.
Set in a rural Minnesota town, the three men who stumble upon the cash are
Hank Mitchell (Bill Paxton), an upstanding mill worker; Jacob (Billy Bob
Thornton), his obtuse yet benevolent sibling; and Lou (Brent Briscoe), a
pugnacious barfly with a chip on his shoulder.

“This is like an Allman Brothers concert if the Allman Brothers didn’t show up,” Mike Birbiglia quipped to hundreds of people perched quietly in lawn chairs, sitting within crudely sketched 8’8″ cubes. It was a cool, humid September night. In the crowd, one could hear crickets. But unlike other standup shows, that wasn’t entirely inappropriate.
Birbiglia, Pete Davidson and John Mulaney were performing standup sets on a 13-acre site as part of a Twilight Concerts on the Farm series at South Farms, a family-owned cattle farm in the hills of northwestern Connecticut.

Jasmine Cephas Jones might be most widely known for her role in the original Hamilton as both Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds, but the talented Broadway actress has entertainment in her blood. She's the daughter of Ron Cephas Jones, aka William from This Is Us, and jazz singer Kim Lesley. Before Ron was putting on Emmy-winning performances in the NBC show, he starred in off-Broadway and Broadway plays such as 2014's Of Mice and Men.
Similarly, Jasmine starred in the Schuyler sister role when the show was off Broadway in 2015, and she continued through 2016 with the Broadway production. She also met her now-fiancé and Hamilton costar, Anthony Ramos, when the show kicked off in 2015. The adorable couple got engaged on Christmas Eve in 2018.
As we count down the days until the 11-time Tony Award-winning stage musical makes its way to Disney+ on July 3, we can't help but gush over the Cephas Jones family.
