Sherlock Holmes is a character that has been iterated and reiterated for every living generation and a few dead ones as well. The character has been written in short stories, novels, films, TV, video games, and even comic books. No matter which direction you kick a can, you will likely hit someone who knows Sherlock Holmes and has their own version of them as “Their Sherlock.” For me, Guy Richie’s take on the pipe-smoking sleuth is the one that gets me the most excited about solving mysteries.
In particular, the first installment in the two-part series (with a long-delayed third potentially on the way) is a work of film that I rewatch often and am endlessly impressed by. And that was all before Tomorrow Never Dies and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, the films that primarily put her on the map for western audiences.
Michelle Yeoh now headlines Netflix series The Brothers Sun, and the synopsis for the show reads as follows:

John Wick: Chapter 4 is marking yet another chance for the West to get to know Donnie Yen, one of Asia’s top leading men. He has already been in several other major Hollywood franchises. He played the scene-stealing Force-sensitive blind master Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the lure for the Asian market role in XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and Commander Tung in the Disney live-action flop, Mulan. However, in that same period when these Hollywood films came out, Yen made 10 of his own Asian-produced films where he was the leading man.
Action films are Yen’s specialty, so Yen’s inclusion in John Wick is a perfect fit. His mother is Grandmaster Bow Sim Mark, a pioneer in the global dissemination of Wushu. Wushu is a flamboyant acrobatic style of Kung Fu, designed for competition. It’s the same style that produced Jet Li along...

It should be pretty obvious by now that not only is Michelle Yeoh ageless; she’s also incapable of a bad performance. Having turned 60 in 2022, she’s still acting like the young women who transformed herself into a Hong Kong action legend in the mid-1980s after having won the crown as Miss Malaysia in 1983. Yeoh was born on August 6, 1962 in Ipoh, Malaysia, and seemed to emerge from the womb possessing unparalleled cinematic martial arts skills. But she was still mostly a well-kept secret on this side of the world until she starred in “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” in 2000 and earned a BAFTA Awards nomination. Some 16 years into her movie career, she was officially an overnight sensation, thanks to director Ang Lee.

Thousands of people from Hong Kong have signed a petition to have actor Donnie Yen removed as an Oscar presenter due to his support for the Chinese government.
The petition says that the 59-year-old actor’s latest remarks over protests in Hong Kong in 2019 “violate the spirit of freedom of speech”.
Hong Kong activist Tong Wai-hung, who set up the petition, also claims that the Academy’s invitation to Yen shows “contempt for the people of Hong Kong” and his presence will “damage the image and reputation of the film industry”.
In an interview with GQ last month, Yen reiterated his opposition to the 2019 pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.
“It wasn’t a protest, okay, it was a riot. I’m not going to be here talking about how to change how people feel about it,” he said.
“But my own experience, like, I was there, I have many friends who were there.

Kung fu is an ancient form of martial arts that has been passed down from master to student. Traditionally, kung fu did not have a belt system. Instead, students would signify moving through the ranks with a scroll signed by the master they were training under.
Eventually, belts were used in kung fu to signify seniority within the practice. Masters would pass on different colored belts to their students as a demonstration of moving through their journey toward mastery. Today, moving through the kung fu belt system is proof of achievement and encouragement for students looking to progress.

By 1997, Donnie Yen, who had already acted as action director in a number of productions including “Tiger Cage” and “Wing Chun”, felt comfortable enough to sit in the chair of the main director, much like Yuen Woo-ping had done years ago. And to ensure that “Legend of the Wolf is his film, he also starred, co-wrote, produced and was still the action director. The result, somewhat expectedly, was not exactly great.
The story takes place in two periods, one in the present and one in the past, with the latter being the most significant, to the point that the first one seems somewhat unnecessary. Nevertheless, in the present, Ben, a young man, goes to meet the legendary and undefeated fighter nicknamed the Wolf, in order to ask him to do something from him. Another day usually means another content drop from Netflix, and today is no different. As if the platform hasn’t provided plenty already this month, they’re now looking to sweeten the deal with the addition of two new series, a stand-up special, and an action movie from a well-respected franchise. If you’ve already watched some of July’s other killer new additions, such as Million Dollar Baby, Donnie Brasco and Paranormal Activity, you may want to give these new titles a look while you wait for the much-anticipated second season of The Umbrella Academy on the 30th.
The most recognizable piece of content from today’s drop is 2019’s Ip Man 4: The Finale, the concluding entry in the Hong Kong martial arts franchise that has captivated audiences worldwide. Donnie Yen reprises his role as the titular character in a tale that tackles immigration, racial discrimination and plenty of Wing Chun action.

"The Grandmaster is back!" Well Go USA has released the first teaser trailer for Ip Man 4, titled in full Ip Man 4: The Finale. As the title indicates, this is the fourth (and final) film in the Ip Man series that first kicked off in 2008 with Donnie Yen starring as the legendary "Yip Man" in Ip Man. Donnie Yen returns again, along with director Wilson Yip (from the first three films), to tell the story of the Kung Fu master's travels to America, where one of his students has upset the local martial arts community by opening a Wing Chun school. The film's full cast includes Wu Yue, Van Ness, Scott Adkins, Kent Cheng, Chan Kwok Kwan Danny, Kanin Ngo, Chris Collins, and Vanda Margraf. This is already finished and ready for release in the Us in December, not too long of a wait. A holiday treat for all the Ip Man fans!

The Donnie Yen starring Ip Man series seemed to be done with the 2015 “Ip Man 3” which opened to lukewarm responses. But it would seem there is still life in the old beast after all, for the next entry in the franchise, the innovatively titled “Ip Man 4”, is gearing up for release. Donnie Yen swears this would be the last film in the series.
Synopsis
While a lot of the plot details are still under wraps, “Ip Man 4” sees the titular Wing Chun master arrive in San Francisco, United States where his most famous student, Bruce Lee, has upset the local martial arts community by opening a Wing Chun school.
Donnie Yen reprises his role as Ip Man and director Wilson Yip and writer Edmond Wong also return for the fourth film of the franchise. After Mike Tyson in the third film, this time it is English actor Scott Adkins...

“Ip Man : The Final Fight” is a kung fu melodrama following Ip Man’s move to Hong Kong in 1949. The story is told in a series of vignettes, sketching out incidents and dramas of Ip Man’s time in Hong Kong, entwined with the stories of his students. The film is spiced up with dashes of kung fu fighting, with three action set pieces fulfilling and satirising kung fu genre expectations. The big adrenalized finale is excellent. In between the bigger set pieces, there are smaller slices of sparring that focus in on the specific technique of Wing Chun and other schools of Chinese Martial Arts.

The first recognised martial arts film was made in 1949, and since then the genre has been developed and adapted to keep providing audiences with entertaining action. The most impressive part of any good martial arts film is the meticulous detail of the fight choreography, making action scenes flow like a dance routine.
Ever since the peak of martial arts films in the days of Bruce Lee, Asian influences have begun to pervade Western culture. Western Mma is built on the foundation of various Asian combat styles, and the strategy and honour of martial arts have also seeped into the mentality of various other mediums. So, without further ado let’s take a look at some of the defining films in martial arts history

Placing Rush Hour as one of the five greatest martial arts films of all time might be a controversial decision, and I’ll admit that nostalgia is a large influence.

Since taking up the mantle of Wing Chun grandmaster in Ip Man 4, Donnie Yen has become increasingly synonymous with the real-life martial arts legend, who famously trained Bruce Lee.

The cinematic odyssey of Ip Man — the real-life master of Wing Chun and, famously, instructor of Bruce Lee — continues with “Master Z: Ip Man Legacy.” But don’t expect Donnie Yen to show up in this installment and don’t expect much in the way of historical fealty, narrative plausibility or serious examinations about human dignity or the ethics of kung fu.
Expect, instead, a spin-off about Ip Man’s rival from “Ip Man 3,” Cheung Tin Chi. After his secret defeat at the hands of Ip Man, Cheung Tin Chi became a mercenary — so briefly that it barely impacts the story. After retiring, he sets up a tiny grocery and tries to raise his son in peace, but a chance encounter with opium dealers leads to one giant fight sequence after another.
The story of “Master Z” is frustratingly muddled, and Cheung Tin Chi has very little to do with it.

Top-class fighting and fabulous production design overcome the stale plot of “Master Z: Ip Man Legacy,” a 1960s-set spin-off from the hit trilogy about the legendary Wing Chun master who trained Bruce Lee. With Max Zhang stepping capably into the spotlight as a former Ip Man challenger who wants to live peacefully but can’t avoid trouble, “Master Z” is professionally executed by veteran action director-choreographer Yuen Woo-ping (“Kill Bill”) and given a star-power lift by the casting of Michelle Yeoh and “Guardians of the Galaxy” team member Dave Bautista in villain roles. This expansion of the Ip Man Universe performed credibly in China and Hong Kong in early 2019 and has the required combination of grunt and gloss to repeat the feat when it opens April 12 on U.S. screens.

Produced by Raymond Wong Bak-ming, one of the founding comedians of the influential 1980s studio Cinema City, and directed by Wilson Yip, the film starred Donnie Yen as the Wing Chun master most famous for being one of Bruce Lee’s teachers. Ip Man was a big success, both critically (it won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Picture) and commercially, and spawned two sequels (with a third on the way later in 2019) and this spin-off film, starring Zhang Jin. It also inspired a couple of fine films by Herman Yau about...

During the mid 1990’s, I happened to stumble across a kung fu movie called “The Prodigal Son“, which changed my life forever. It had everything, awesome Kung Fu, Comedy, Drama, Training Sequences and the star of the show, Lam Ching Ying. It was only a few years later when I read Lam Ching Ying had passed away in 1997 from liver cancer, I was deeply saddened. Since then, I have had the privilege to collect many of his movies, Lam Ching Ying was not only a great Martial Artist and Stuntman, but he was also a very good Actor.
Lam Ching Ying joined the Peking Opera School at a very young age, under the guidance of Madame Fan Fok Fa. By the age of 17, Lam became a stuntman appearing in Shaw Brothers movies such as...

I am a huge fan of Ip Man film franchise and I'm excited to report that there is a fourth IP Man film in development! Donnie Yen posted a photo of the script for Ip Man 4 and says that franchise director Wilson Yip promised him that this would be the best one.
We don't have any details on the story, but Ip Man lived an incredible life as a master teacher in the art of Wing Chun. This is the man who trained Bruce Lee. If you haven't seen the first three films in the franchise, you really need to do that because you're missing out on complete and utter awesomeness!
Hopefully, we get some story details on Ip Man 4 soon. When that information does finally come to light, I'll let you know! Are you excited that we are getting a fourth Ip Man film?

Hey Lrm Weekenders, this week we're featuring some of the most intriguing, powerful, and successful women in Hollywood. Its easy to become fixated on our male action stars, since that's how Hollywood tends to market their films, so we sometimes fail to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of our female action stars! But first, we want to discuss the elephant in the room: the dwindling audiences at movie theaters -- we'll explore some problems, one potential solution, and hopefully provide some insight into an issue that's only going to get worse if everything remains status quo.

Note: This piece was originally published on May 30, 2017, but in light of The Defenders hitting Netflix this Friday, we thought it had some thoughts worth reiterating.
Marvel and Netflix have created something truly special with their four superhero shows: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. They've established a unique, ongoing, and shared universe that not only respects each character's source material, but also builds upon and expands their lore. Fans have clearly responded, as many media outlets report that these are some of the most-popular shows on Netflix.
Daredevil is heading into its third season, while Jessica Jones and Luke Cage are each preparing for their second, but what about the fate of Iron Fist? According to SuperBroMovies, Danny Rand himself, actor Finn Jones, will soon issue a Season 2 announcement. While that's certainly welcome news for the whole Marvel/Netflix enterprise, it's probably safe to say that Iron Fist...

Starting in 2008, Ip Man, the master of Wing Chun, has featured as the main character in a number of movies and a TV series. “Final Fight” presents the story of his last period, when he moved to Hong Kong from Foshan, following the victory of the Chinese Communist Party in the Chinese Civil War, since he was a police officer of the previous regime, the Kuomintang.
“Ip Man: Final Fight” is released by Cine Asia
The film begins in 1949, upon his arrival in Hong Kong, where a sick and alone, 56 -year-old Ip Man (his wife and son had stayed in Foshan) starts teaching Wing Chun on the rooftop of a building that houses the hotel staff’s general association. He meets and accepts new students from every part of society, and his class consists of laborers, a lot of which are members of the labor movement, correctional officers, even policemen.

Ip Man 2, from Cine Asia, is a semi-biographical martial arts film loosely based on the life of Wing Chun grandmaster, Ip Man. The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.
This sequel continues on from events in the first Ip Man film, and covers Ip Man’s life in Hong Kong, which was at the time under British colonial rule, and recovering from the Japanese invasion of China. Ip Man’s main hurdles are his reduced circumstances, British oppression, and rivalry from other martial arts practitioners, including the local Hung Ga master Hung Chun-nam, as played by Sammo Hung.

Donnie Yen plays a blind martial arts super-fighter in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story — and in real life, the contacts he wore to simulate his character’s blindness made it nearly impossible for him to see at all.
The actor and Chinese martial arts expert, who plays the blind Force-specialist Chirrut Îmwe in the film, recently explained what it was like working with those whited out contacts in People’s Star Wars: The Secrets of Rogue One Special Issue.
“That was difficult, a lot more difficult than I expected,” said Yen, explaining that the contacts made him nearly as blind as his character.

In the highly anticipated first Star Wars spinoff film, Rogue One, Hong Kong martial arts superstar Donnie Yen was given the chance to shape his character. Yen is well known for his active role in the creative process during his movies, from Ip Man to the Blade franchise. Most often, that influence has come from the incredible fight choreography that he brings to the table, stemming from his mastery of Wing Chun.
“When you hire me, you’re not just getting an actor; you are getting a choreographer, a director.” – Donnie Yen
This time the process was even more intense for Yen. Director Gareth Edwards actively sought out the star’s ideas about where to go with his character Chirrut Îmwe. When Edwards approached Yen early in the process about how to make this character more compelling, he shared his idea that the fighting master should be blind.

Many big screen biographies are often accused of taking…liberties…with the facts, often to help the finished film’s pacing. After all, unless it’s a TV mini-series, it’s difficult to compress a remarkable life into an evening at the movies. Film makers will frequently switch the order of events along with the popular practice of using composite characters (a little bit of this fella’, and a bit of this old pal, and…), even inventing supporting roles, or tagging real folks with invented names. And then there are fantasy tales using a real person (and elements of his life) as the story’s heroic center. In Hollywood famous true Western outlaws like Billy the Kid and Jesse James were the leads in many fictional flicks (hey, those two “met” Dracula and Frankenstein’s daughter!). Those on the opposite side of the law like Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson...

To the uninitiated, Donnie Yen is a cast member in the upcoming Rogue One Star Wars spin-off, but for those in the know, he’s one of the great martial artists of Asian cinema. It’s safe to say that he’s on the Mt. Rushmore of martial arts superstars, and based on his body of work, Donnie Yen is more consistent then counterparts Jet Li and Jackie Chan. With Ip Man 3, Yen gets to say goodbye to the character he’s been playing for the last eight years.

I recently watched the first two Ip Man films with a friend of mine who had never seen them before. Needless to say, he was impressed by their badassery. Hell, after watching them again I was even more pumped for Ip Man 3! We now have a new action-packed trailer for IP Man 3 filled with new footage that is sure to increase your excitement level for this movie.
Some of you might think it’s kind of ridiculous seeing Mike Tyson in this movie, but the fact that his role is dead seriouss, and that he faces off against freakin’ Donnie Yen is pretty damn radical. This trailer completely fired me up for this movie!
Donnie Yen (upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon 2) ignites the screen in a return to the role that made him an icon - as Ip Man, the real-life Wing Chun grandmaster who mentored Bruce Lee.

Slick choreography fails to lift this patchy third instalment of the martial arts series
This third instalment in the quasi-biographical series ruffled feathers during pre-production when it was announced that a CGI simulacrum would be employed to bring Bruce Lee back from the dead to play himself. Lee’s estate protested, and the plan was dropped, the incidental role being filled instead by Danny Chan. Sadly, the necessary technology does not exist to breathe life into Mike Tyson’s performance as lumbering thug Frank, who speaks two languages but is coherent in neither. Donnie Yen returns as Ip Man, with whom we pick up in Hong Kong, 1959.
There’s a West Side Story liveliness to some early scenes, after which the patchy story plods messily towards a projected showdown with Cheung Tin-chi (played by Zhang Jin, who had an eye-catching role in Wong Kar-wai’s The Grandmaster), who challenges Ip...

The first clip from Ip Man 3 has been released, and it features Donnie Yen as Yip Man meeting a confident Bruce Lee, who is played by Kwok-Kwan Chan. In the clip, Lee reminds Yip Man that he came to him as a child looking to study with him, and Yip goes right into testing Lee's martial arts skills and speed. It's a pretty awesome clip that fans of this franchise should enjoy. I'm a huge fan of the first two films, and I'm excited to see this third chapter!

Devoted fans of Asian action cinema already know Donnie Yen from his many martial arts movies, but for everyone else, his upcoming role in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will serve as a grand, if delayed, introduction. Yen began his entertainment career as a stunt double in 1982, quickly graduating to star status two years later in Drunken Tai Chi. His abilities as a martial artist were abundantly on display in movies like Tiger Cage, In the Line of Duty 4, Once Upon a Time in China 2, Iron Monkey and Wing Chun. He moved to television in the mid-1990s and then nabbed supporting roles in Hollywood; look for him in Highlander: Endgame, Blade II and Shanghai Knights, the latter opposite Jackie Chan. Unlike Chan, however, Yen has never been known for his comic abilities and it...
