“Bye Bye Love”, a queer-themed Japanese film from the 70s, by the relatively unknown Isao Fujisawa, was thought lost until 2018, when a film negative was discovered in a warehouse by the producer and sometimes director Suzuki Akihiro, who then made a new print and re-premiered the film in an online forum.
Bye Bye Love is screening at Queer East Festival
The film begins with a young man who has just been dumped by his girlfriend on the phone, and reacts as the epitome of “the guy”. A bit later, he bumps across the street with a woman running, who asks him to stop the pervert who is chasing her. It turns out though, that she has just stolen a Doors LP from a record store and that the ‘pervert' is actually a policeman, whom the young man proceeds on tackling, inevitably getting arrested. He manages to escape though, and soon...

The first thing to say about Alex Gibney’s “In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon” is that it’s three-and-a-half hours long. Normally I wouldn’t lead with that daunting fact, especially since the film is mostly marvelous: a documentary that every Paul Simon fan on earth should want to see and experience. But will they?
I raise the issue only because “In Restless Dreams” has come into the Toronto Film Festival without a distributor, and let’s just be honest: The 209-minute running time, when you hear about it, doesn’t exactly sound…user-friendly. Gibney, of course, is one of the renaissance masters of contemporary documentary, a filmmaker of staggering skill and eclecticism. On occasion, he sprinkles in a music doc, which is clearly a labor of love for him. If you’ve never seen “Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown,” it’s sensational. And Gibney...

Nazareth’s “Love Hurts” was a cover of a song in a different genre. A member of Nazareth said his band’s “Love Hurts” was the first rock ballad. That claim makes no sense.
One of the most famous classic rock songs of the 1970s is Nazareth’s “Love Hurts.” The track was originally by a 1950s/1960s band. Subsequently, Nazareth went out of their way to change the original song.
Nazareth’s ‘Love Hurts’ was originally a song by The Everly Brothers
The Everly Brothers had a handful of hits in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including “Cathy’s Clown,” “Wake Up Little Susie,” “Bye Bye Love,” and “That’s Old Fashioned (That’s the Way Love Should Be).”
They also released the first version of the song “Love Hurts.” It wasn’t a single, but merely an album track from the 1960 record A Date with the Everly Brothers.

“The Devil Wears Prada” and “27 Dresses” writer Aline Brosh McKenna’s directorial debut “Your Place Or Mine” stars Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher. A strong ensemble cast includes Steve Zahn, Jesse Williams, Tig Notaro and Zoe Chao along with Wesley Kimmel. The film heads to Netflix Friday, Feb. 10.
Peter (Kutcher) lives in New York where he looks forward to change in his consulting job and love life. Debbi (Witherspoon) lives in Los Angeles with her son Jack (Kimmel), and she clings to structure and routine. The two are exact opposites, but they have been best friends for 20 years ever since they had a one-night stand that didn’t go anywhere. Peter loves “The Cars,” and the film contains quite a few of their hits.
For Debbie, McKenna wrote the film’s original song “Embers” with the film’s composer Siddhartha and Alan DeMoss, who produced and mixed the score.

Ric Ocasek was one of the all-time great American songwriters: the spirit of Buddy Holly in the body and mind of Mr. Spock, a new wave eccentric who always wanted to brush your rock & roll hair. That’s why the world is in mourning at the news of his death yesterday, at the age of 75. With the Cars, the Boston legend scored hit after hit, yet he also wrote vulnerable ballads about teen angst with his own distinctive blend of compassion and humor, plus his authentic geek-gulp of a voice.

As Gwen Verdon, a four-time Tony winner who never got full credit for her invaluable contributions to her emotionally-stunted husband’s fabulous career, Michelle Williams digs deep and vividly exposes the truth in FX’s “Fosse/Verdon.” While the limited series doesn’t ignore the fact that the supremely talented singer/dancer was no saint herself, it makes it crystal clear that Verdon greatly influenced — and not just benefitted from — her ongoing partnership with Bob Fosse, a choreographer extraordinaire who won a record eight Tonys (plus one for helming “Pippin”) and collected an Oscar for his 1972 big-screen version of the musical “Cabaret.”
But as terrific as Williams is – she deserves an Emmy just for her half-tipsy, nakedly honest rendition of the song “Where am I Going?” from the Broadway musical “Sweet Charity” – her co-star, Sam Rockwell, has a even more difficult job of making viewers care about Fosse. Let’s just...

In early 1963, when incoming Alabama governor George Wallace delivered his infamous “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” speech, the Number One record on the nation’s R&B chart, as well as a recent Top Ten hit on pop radio, was “You Are My Sunshine” by Ray Charles. That country standard was already well-known to generations of pop fans, thanks to sunny, sing-a-long recordings by Gene Autry, Bing Crosby and others. But Charles’ version was something else. A fierce and danceable duet with Raelette Margie Hendrix, Charles’ “You Are My...

I never liked Danny Masterson. All the way back to his days when he was in the movie “Bye Bye Love” as the guy who says “Party Party!” I never got a good vibe from him. I never liked him on “That 70s Show.” He was the only character I didn’t find funny. While he’s not quite the same guy as Johnny Galecki I used to get the two confused. Anyway, that’s besides the point. I just didn’t like his gruff character. I never felt he brought anything to the table. What does this have to do with Danny Masterson

It’s been a long time between drinks for Blake Shelton — at least if we’re talking about the last time The Voice‘s winning-est coach saw one of his artists take home first prize. Indeed, you’d have to go back to Craig Wayne Boyd’s victory in Season 7 — almost two years ago — for that particular milestone.

Half of the brilliant duo that transformed 1950s pop music
With his older brother Don, Phil Everly, who has died of pulmonary disease aged 74, formed one of pop music's greatest vocal partnerships. If it was Elvis Presley who became the most spectacular icon of 1950s rock'n'roll, the Everly Brothers created a musical legacy which was every bit as influential. Their unique vocal harmonies, coupled with ingenious guitar arrangements and timeless material, had a revolutionary impact on the Beatles, the Hollies, Simon & Garfunkel, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and Crosby Stills & Nash.
The Everly Brothers' breakthrough hit was Bye Bye Love (1957), still regarded as one of their most impressive creations. Up to that point, Don and Phil had been chipping away at the country music scene in Nashville, Tennessee, with limited success. Gary David Goldberg, the Emmy-winning creator of Family Ties and Spin City, died yesterday in Montecito, Calif. He was 68. Goldberg was an experienced TV writer of 1970s programs like Lou Grant, The Tony Randall Show, and The Bob Newhart Show when he built Family Ties in 1982 for NBC, basing the idealistic hippie parents played by Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter on himself and his wife, Dr. Diana Meehan. The show became an essential part of the network’s Thursday-night lineup — pairing with The Cosby Show for a time as TV’s two biggest shows — and made Michael J. Fox a huge star.

Gary David Goldberg, the Emmy-winning creator of "Family Ties," died on June 23 of brain cancer, Variety reported. He was 68.
Born in Brooklyn, Goldberg was raised in a home with a close, extended family that was headed by a strong matriarch, his grandmother. He was a huge sports fan and a wanderer who had a bit of trouble figuring out what he wanted to be when he grew up.
Goldberg's collegiate career, which he described as "prolonged and checkered," involved attending numerous schools, including Brandeis University and San Diego State University. He only decided to become a scriptwriter at the urging of one of his professors.
Goldberg was working as a waiter at the Village Gate club in Greenwich Village in 1969 when he met his wife and the love his life, Dr. Diana Meehan. They were a couple of hippies -- a product of their time -- and spent the early...

Iron Man 3 opens this weekend with plenty of giant explosions to delight audiences and usher in the unofficial start of the Summer Movie. But in other multiplexes there’s another film down the hall, What Maisie Knew, that tells a very different but every bit as destructive story.Henry James wrote the story this film — directed by Scott McGehee and David Siegel — is based upon in 1897. That his tale of a divorced, selfish pair of parents who use their young daughter spitefully in order to hurt the other still feels realistic and resonates over a century later is either...

When I met with Jack Black at a Midtown Manhattan hotel, he was fighting a sore throat. Black's under the weather demeanor, lounging on the couch in what can be best described as "I'm sick, so I want to be comfortable" attire, gave the entire proceeding a sense of informality. An informality that resulted in (A) Black all but admitting that he wanted to talk about other subjects than the film he was promoting, "Bernie," and (B) me feeling so comfortable that I openly admitted my disdain for Black's 2009 film, "Gulliver's Travels" -- which I immediately regretted.
In "Bernie," Black is reunited with his "School of Rock" director Richard Linklater to play Bernie Tiede -- the true story of a Texas funeral director who is charged with the murder of an elderly widow, played by Shirley McLaine. Here, Black discusses if the dark comedy of "Bernie" signals a shift in his career trajectory,...

Earlier today we posted the first clip from J.J. Abrams' Super 8 and it got us all pretty nostalgic for the classic Spielberg movies. From "Bye Bye Love" by The Cars to the way the kids smile and play around while filming their movie, the whole thing reeks of Amblin. Now it's time to introduce a little Saving Private Ryan. Moviefone has premiered the second 30 second clip from Super 8 and, quite surprisingly, it picks up at the very second the last video ended, with the train being derailed and exploding. All in all it's a pretty cool action sequence filled with tension and panic, but if you're wondering if it provides the first look at what breaks out of the compartment you should prepare for disappointment. Check out the clip below. runHtml5Fallback('gorillanationPlayer_ci012_playlist_39_ci012_single_294629', 'html5_vid_ci012_playlist_39_ci012_single_294629'); For more on J.

If you're gonna do crazy, you best do it right. Halle Berry tied on every fucking ribbon on this role in trying to garner Academy attention: racism, feminism, stripping, multiple personality disorders, traumatic births, and a period piece! The only thing she didn't do is send decorative gift baskets to everyone who votes, but there's still time. But it would be a futile effort, because there's no amount of bath soaps and cookies on dowels that could save this ridiculously contrived and embarrassing mish-mash of a film. It's a poor-man's version of every Robin Williams in a Beard film. Halle Berry wanted to make this a showpiece for her acting talents, but what she ended up with was a plodding example of histrionics and shameful first-level improv class acting. When she breaks into the various personalities, it's like watching fourth-graders do imitations: one's a street-wise black stripper, the others an...

Amber Nicole Benson was born on January 8, 1977, to Edward and Diane Benson, and today is an actress, screenwriter, producer, director, playwright, and author who's most famous for her role as Tara Maclay on the long-running television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV). Benson was both born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, and it was there that she first discovered her interest in the arts, as she studied dance, music, and acting. "When I was a little kid I saw The Nutcracker Suite and desperately wanted to get on the stage," Benson told AfterEllen.com. "That was the beginning of the end for me." A family move to Orlando, Florida led to several opportunities, but work and success followed yet another move, this time to Los Angeles. Benson was still in her teens when her acting career started to take off. She played Nicole Reed in several made-for-tv Jack Reed movies starring Brian Dennehy,...

Ah Eliza Eliza Eliza! How you've grown from your days on "True Lies" back in 1994. Through the years you've said "Bye Bye Love" and we were heartbroken. Later you got mad and said "Bring It On" but thankfully we came out Ok as "Soul Survivors." Yet you let us down again when you went for "The New Guy." Still you found your way back to us even after taking a "Wrong Turn." Ok, enough already, here we have a new clip from Fox's new show "Dollhouse" which is coming soon. Dishy Dushku stars as Echo in the Josh Whedon created sci-fi thriller. Also in the cast are Amy Acker, Enver Gjokaj, Fran Kranz, Dichen Lachman and it's good to see "Matrix Revolutions" actor Harry Lenix in the mix as well.
