In a split ruling today, a state appeals court panel reinstated a grant of parole for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, overturning an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to block her release.
Tuesday’s decision does not automatically mean Van Houten will be released. The state could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office immediately returned a message seeking comment.
Van Houten, now 73, is serving a potential life prison sentence for taking part in the killings of Leno and Rosemary Labianca in their Los Feliz home more than 50 years ago.

Serial killer psychological profiling thriller “Mindhunter” would’ve headed to Hollywood for Season 3, had Netflix not indefinitely shelved the series executive produced by David Fincher.
Season 2 director Andrew Dominik told Collider that had “Mindhunter” continued for a third installment, the show would have taken place in Los Angeles.
“One of them was going to be hooking up with Jonathan Demme and the other one was going to be hooking up with Michael Mann,” Dominik said. “And it was all going to be about profiling making it into the sort of zeitgeist, the public consciousness. It would’ve been… that was the season everyone was really waiting for to do, with when they sort of get out of the basement and start.”
The “Blonde” director was a fan of the series before reaching out to Fincher to join the show. According to Dominik, Fincher suggested he direct the Season 2 Charles Manson episode.

There have been many dramas in which actors portray legendary true-life psycho killers, and the overwhelming majority of them are less than convincing. Every so often, though, an actor — through looks, skill, and temperament — will connect to the monster he’s playing in a way that’s so uncanny it seizes and chills you. Jeremy Davies’ performance as Charles Manson in the 2004 version of “Helter Skelter” was like that — it was the definitive Manson, sinuous and seething, even greater than Steve Railsback’s celebrated portrayal. Jeremy Renner, before anyone had heard of him, played Jeffrey Dahmer in the 2002 indie gem “Dahmer,” and he was remarkable: a lonely vacant nerd of horror.
Watching Amber Sealey’s “No Man of God,” which premiered yesterday at the Tribeca Festival, there are moments when you feel that same creepy frisson watching Luke Kirby play Ted Bundy; you feel as if he becomes him. The physical resemblance is uncanny,...

[Editor’s note: Boots Riley’s exclusive follow-up statement to IndieWire has been added to the bottom of the post]
“Sorry to Bother You” writer-director Boots Riley returned to Twitter after a nearly three-month hiatus to share a criticism he has with Quentin Tarantino’s depiction of the Manson Family cult members in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” Actors such as Dakota Fanning, Austin Butler, Maya Hawke, and Lena Dunham star in the film as Manson followers, many of which are based on real people. Riley took issue with Tarantino’s script for depicting the cult members as hippies with liberal beliefs and not at all dealing with their racism and right-wing views.
“The Manson Family were overt white supremacists who tried to start a race war with the goal of killing black folks,” Riley wrote to his followers. “They weren’t ‘hippies’ spouting left critiques of media. They were rightwingers. This fact flips Tarantino’s allegory on its head.

No other mass criminal or cult figure in American history has garnered as much fascination within Hollywood and popular culture as Charles Manson (though Ted Bundy is coming close). He and his “family” have been the subject of movies, parodies, and he even landed a Rolling Stone cover. “American Horror Story: Cult” had an actor portraying Manson, and Quentin Tarantino is digging up the past for his “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” featuring the Manson Family murders. Here is a sampling of actors who have dared to play the notorious figure.
Steve Railsback – “Helter Skelter” (1976)
The memory of Manson was still fresh when this TV special based on Vincent Bugliosi’s book was aired. CBS even made it a two-night special.
Michael Reid MacKay – “Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys” (1990)
This TV special about the career of the Beach Boys explored Manson’s relationship with Beach Boys member Dennis Wilson.

Back in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s I was (over)active on the bootleg video circuit. One of the directors I discovered in my dealings with other collectors was Jim Van Bebber. His Deadbeat at Dawn was a legend almost immediately after it was released, and his reputation was solidified by a handful of short films which traumatized heretofore steel-bellied horror movie viewers. Even in slightly blurry, multi-generational bootleg copies, his films carried a wallop not felt very often. They were energetic, raw, no-holds-barred and outrageously gory. They had to be seen to be believed.
Fast-forward to the present and Van Bebber is one of a handful of Diy film mavericks, along with Bill Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Sam Raimi, Buddy Giovinazzo and their ilk, now revered for their hardcore 80’s output. But of this group, perhaps Van Bebber stands just a little taller for his extreme persistence.

We’ve been keeping our eyes on Quentin Tarantino’s next project, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, currently filming in Los Angeles. The cast is a whos-who of […]

The Miskatonic Institute Horror Studies – London will use the Manson family as a springboard to delve into the sub-genre of films inspired by cults and alternative religions in California from the 60s and 70s, in a masterclass entitled No Sense Makes Sense: Gurus, Cults, Murder and Movies, taught by author Ian Cooper who frequently writes on horror and cults.
This class will examine the rise of alternative religious movements/cults in California in the 1960s and 70s which spawned an ongoing sub-genre of the horror film. The focus will be on the Manson Family, not only the most notorious of these groups but also the one with the greatest cultural impact. This is due to a number of factors including the nightmarish, random violence, the involvement of a number of high-profile artists and celebrities, from Roman Polanski and Dennis Wilson through to Dennis Hopper and Angela Lansbury and the dark glamor of Manson himself,...

The name John Waters can conjure up many an image. Be it of the director himself (that mustache is as much a calling card as any of his feature films) or of his controversial films, few directors have built a cult around themselves like Waters. Best friend to the rejects, scumbags, losers and perverts, Waters and his films have become not only points of discussion for government officials lamenting about the nation’s dissolving morals but rallying points for those who live on the outside of popular culture.
And yet even he has one of those pesky “rarely seen” films that has seemingly become a forgotten curio for only the biggest of fans. That is, until Janus Films got hold of it. Entitled Multiple Maniacs, Waters marked his second feature by making a film that even had judicial figures like Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Joseph H.

There have been few names to enter the film landscape quite like the late-thespian/enfant terrible Dennis Hopper. Best known for directing and helping write the iconic New Hollywood masterpiece Easy Rider, Hopper began his career starring in various TV series until hitting big screens with pictures like Rebel Without A Cause, Giant and eventually Night Tide, a film that would become a calling card for the actor and a movement of surrealist filmmaking unlike anything the Us had seen cinematically up to that moment. However, while his career would continue growing from Rider, his work on that film would seemingly change him from avant garde character actor to the idol of his generation.
And then there was The Last Movie. Still nearly impossible to see, Hopper’s Rider follow up would see him heading to New Mexico to make what sounds like a masterpiece of the “films about films” genre,...

"There's some really cool pictures of dead people!" The Orchard has debuted a trailer for the offbeat indie comedy Manson Family Vacation, about two estranged brothers who go on a weird trip together to visit the infamous Manson Family murder sites. Jay Duplass stars as one of the brothers, with Linas Phillips (Bass Ackwards) as the other. The synopsis describes it as a story about two brothers: "one who's devoted to his family; the other who's obsessed with The Manson Family." The film's cast also features Tobin Bell, Leonora Pitts and Davie-Blue. This is such an awkward comedy, I can see why they're sending it straight to VOD, definitely not for everyone. Not sure who it's for, but some may find some fun in this. Have at it. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for J. Davis' Manson Family Vacation, on YouTube (via SlashFilm): Nick Morgan (Jay Duplass) has it all: a loving family,...

This week’s Mad Men may not be a classic, but it takes care of old business and starts clearing a path to the show’s finale…

7. 9 New Business
New Business was a bridge, not a destination. As such, it’ll never be anyone’s favourite Mad Men episode but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a piece of crucial engineering. It took Don from cosy milkshake-making domesticity with Betty and the kids to an apartment stripped bare – a simplified flick-book reminder of his trajectory over the last decade, if you like.
It also, with the help of a fat cheque, said goodbye to Megan (if not the entire Calvet clan, depending on how Marie and Roger get on) and shoved Betty towards her own potential ending. A master’s degree in Psychology will be perfect for Birdie – she could get a lifetime’s business...

If you want The Manson Family on Blu-Ray or via the Blu-Ray/DVD Combo, today is your last chance.
Last night, Severin Films posted via their Facebook page that they would be destroying all non-sold copies of The Manson Family on Blu-Ray. The reasoning is pretty clear on their post, which I have embedded below.
Post by Severin Films.
In the post, Severin talks about the director, Jim VanBebber slandering the company. This isn’t the first time many of you have heard about VanBebber having disagreements with companies releasing his films or weird interviews that he has given. You may have heard the voicemails messages that were left for Don May, Jr. from Synapse Films regarding the transfer of Deadbeat at Dawn.
Regardless, if you want the film on Blu-Ray, today is the last day to buy it from Severin’s website before they destroy all the remaining inventory.

Sharon Tate was a sex symbol and fledgling movie star. The "Fearless Vampire Killers" and "Valley of the Dolls" star was married to Roman Polanski. Tate and four others were killed by The Manson Family in August 1969. Megan from "Mad Men" is not Sharon Tate. D.B. Cooper is the name given to a man who hijacked a Boeing 727 in 1971, secured $200,000 in ransom and parachuted out of the plane, never to be seen again or definitively identified. Don Draper from "Mad Men" is not D.B. Cooper. Probably. For reasons that are vaguely baffling to me, a recent trend in "Mad Men" viewership has been to decide that despite no indications at all in those directions, the Emmy-winning drama had been heading toward one or possible two grand historical revelations in which our fictional characters turned out to be famous or notorious real world figures. "Mad Men" hit the Television Critics Association...

In Lucio Fulci’s 1981 horror movie, The Beyond, Liza Merril thought she could fix up her inherited hotel and re-open it, but as fans of the film know, Liza’s place of business serves as one of the Seven Doors of Death, a portal to hell that no amount of new paint or improved plumbing can fix. Grindhouse Releasing revealed today the official release date of their 3-disc restored Blu-ray of The Beyond.
Grindhouse Releasing’s The Beyond Blu-ray is scheduled to come out on February 10th and will be available to pre-order later this week. Directed by Lucio Fulci off a screenplay he wrote with Dardano Sacchetti and Giorgio Mariuzzo, The Beyond stars Catriona MacColl, David Warbeck, Cinzia Monreale, and Veronica Lazar.

With only hope, a dream and one writing credit to his name (SXSW short film Kevin), J. Davis lassoed fellow low-budget filmmakers Linas Phillips (Bass Ackwards) and Jay Duplass (Baghead) and placed them in brotherly love roles. A family reunion type pic with a set of backdrops like no other, having raised a successful round of startup funds in late 2013 via Kickstarter, Manson Family Vacation didn’t drop in ’14, so we’re expecting this low-budget laugher to easily squeeze into the early ’15 fest circuit . It’ll need major funny bone to go with the freaky title to convince Sundance programmers.

It has been officially confirmed that Grindhouse Releasing is working on a Blu-ray edition of The Beyond and Cannibal Holocaust. Both movies were previously released by Grindhouse Releasing on DVD and we’ve provided details below on the bonus features that will likely be ported over to the new high-def versions. A release date has not been specified, but we expect to see them later this year and will keep Daily Dead readers posted on any updates.
Cannibal Holocaust: “The most controversial movie ever made has finally arrived on DVD! Banned and heavily censored throughout theiworld, here is a film that surpasses its reputation as a shotgun blast to the senses. Cannibal Holocaust presents the “found footage” of four documentary filmmakers who experience brutal death at the hands of a savage South American tribe of flesh-eaters. This footage is so intense, so graphic and so unflinching in its realism...

Manson Family Vacation
Director: J. Davis
Writer(s): J. Davis
Producer(s): Steve Bannatyne, Eric Blyler, J. Davis, J.M. Logan, Josh Polon, Alexandra Sandler
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Jay Duplass, Linas Phillips, Leonora Pitts
Among the newbie additions to the extended family of collaborators and conspirators related to the Duplass Bros., J. Davis’ previous cred was as the Kevin – the Jay Duplass directed short docu project. Davis and Duplass re-team on a funny bone project that could easily target next year’s Sundance-sxsw festivals as it has the girth of a film that was helped out with kickstarter coin and without much else (see co-star Bass Ackwards‘ creator Linas Phillips speak from the heart). on paper, the sharply titled Manson Family Vacation is the sort of perfect trifecta indie comedy as it includes: a. modes of transportation, b. confused souls in unique backdrops and c. family bonding.

Christmas is a time for feel-good movies. It’s a Wonderful Life, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and the usual Hallmark Hall of Fame drivel that hits the airwaves every December. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy the mainstream Christmas classics as much as the next guy. But at night, when my family is all snug in their beds, that’s when I drag out my sick and twisted Christmas collection…
Black Christmas, Christmas Evil, Silent Night Deadly Night, Don’t Open Till Christmas, those are the films I like to cuddle up to with a spiked eggnog. What is my favorite? That’s a difficult question. I love them all for different reasons, but if I had to pick one, I would have to pick a recent import from Finland called Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale. A modern mashup of The Thing and the Krampus mythology, it is...

When Sunday came around, the organizers seemed (understandably) tired, but the audiences still wanted more gore and continued to turn up for it. I started off the morning by paying tribute to a film shot right here in my new adopted city. I Didn't Come Here to Die (our review) is the tale of several twentysomethings setting out to do volunteer work in the woods where they come upon evil and sinister forces. The setup might seem a tad familiar -- in a way it does kind of read like Tucker and Dale vs. Evil from the preppy kids' point of view. However, the sort of guerilla filmmaking used in I Didn't Come Here to Die calls to mind past classics while breathing new life into a genre so obsessed with remakes. It's a feat most horror movies try, but fail at hopelessly. At least there's one that hasn't.

The Manson Family conjures up a number of disturbing visuals and eerie moments in its quasi-narrative but documentarian style retelling of Charlie Manson and his groupies, but mostly it's just a train wreck. Kudos, to writer and Director Jim Van Bebber for laboring over the project as he apparently did, but aside from making the audience feel a sense of unease with its jumps back and forth between a story, recreations of archival interviews, and abstract imagery, the movie doesn't evoke much of anything. What it does succeed at is trying far too hard to achieve particular 70s aesthetic with filters giving footage faux-grain and spots in an attempt to make it all feel as genuine as possible, but ultimately it's just a distraction. Telling the story from the side of Charlie Manson's family is interesting, but fewer artistic embellishments with more emphasis on storytelling might have made the experience more palatable.

At its best, Jim Van Bebber’s 2003 exploitation flick “The Manson Family” is like watching a hallucinatory nightmare come to life. Vivid and savage, the film is full of images that stick with you long after your viewing experience comes to a close. To mark a full decade of madness, Severin Films has unleashed a new 10th anniversary Blu-ray to fuck with your mind and conscience. What more do you need beside orgies, drugs, and murder, with a special emphasis on the orgies? Constructed like a faux-documentary, you know bones of the story. Charles Manson (Marcelo Games) sets himself up as a guru leader of his “family” of young hippie searchers, and steers them on a path of debauchery and violence that leaves seven people dead. One way “The Manson Family” differs from other looks at this historical reality is that Charlie plays a relatively small part, with the primary...

‘Cursed productions’ are not exclusive to horror pictures. But, it’s typically horror films that garner the most attention for tumultuous circumstances surrounding their filming. At one point, people seemed to like the idea of those involved with horror movies being condemned for their participation in the devil’s work. But, these days, many people would, attribute a cursed production to nothing more than bad luck, negligence, unfortunate circumstances, or a combination of the above factors. Films from The Wizard of Oz to Superman have spawned rumors of a curse associated with their production. But, a lot of people argue that there is a slightly less fantastical explanation for films that endured a particularly turbulent shoot.
Despite the fact that people try to tell us that there is no such thing as a ‘cursed production’, we thought it would be interesting to reminisce on some of the most notorious ‘cursed productions’. As a disclaimer,...

A true grindhouse maverick who hates happy endings, Jim VanBebber has made a name for himself in the world of low-budget, independent exploitation cinema as a writer/director and sometimes actor.
Since his first feature, Deadbeat at Dawn (1988), his gritty, outlaw style of filmmaking has generated films that are unapologetic in their realism and singular in their vision.
In 2004 VanBebber took on Charlie Manson. Shot over four years, The Manson Family is a documentary-style (though semi-fictional) look at the Manson cult filled with lurid sex, shocking violence and murderous flower power. For its 10th anniversary The Manson Family is being unleashed nationwide complete with VanBebber's Kickstarter-fueled short Gator Green (get theater listings here). A special edition Blu-ray release will follow on May 7th by Severin Films, which will include the short and a documentary on the making of The Manson Family, entitled The VanBebber Family.
