Oscar-nominated actor Ryan O’Neal, who came to prominence on TV’s “Peyton Place” and became a top star of the 1970s in films including “Love Story,” “What’s Up, Doc?,” “Paper Moon” and “Barry Lyndon,” died Friday, his son Patrick said on Instagram. He was 82.
O’Neal was diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and with prostate cancer in 2012.
“Ryan was a very generous man who has always been there to help his loved ones for decade upon decade,” his son wrote. “My dad was 82, and lived a kick ass life. I hope the first thing he brags about in Heaven is how he sparred 2 rounds with Joe Frazier in 1966, on national TV, with Muhammad Ali doing the commentary, and went toe to toe with Smokin’ Joe.”

Janet Yang has been re-elected as president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. Her second-term re-election was made by the Academy’s board of governors who additionally elected a number of officer positions for 2023-2024.
Yang is an Emmy-winning producer with credits on projects including “The Joy Luck Club,” “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Zero Effect,” “High Crimes,” “Dark Matter,” “Shanghai Calling” and “Over the Moon.” She climbed to her success in Hollywood after working under Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy who helped show her the ropes at Amblin.
“I’ve felt like an outsider many times throughout my life,” Yang said this year at the Oscars. “It’s wonderful to have a sense of belonging, and terrible not to … If I can help open the door for other women and people of color, I’m thrilled.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Tuesday that its Board of Governors has re-elected producer Janet Yang as president of the organization. Members elected new people to fill the majority of officer positions as well, with only Lynette Howell Taylor and Kim Taylor-Coleman returning to their posts.

Under Janet’s esteemed leadership, these dedicated governors will guide the Academy’s ongoing efforts to elevate the work of our global membership and film community, highlight our industry’s rich history, foster meaningful dialogue, and continue to build equity and inclusion in every aspect of our organization.”

Janet Yang has been re-elected president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by the organization’s Board of Governors.
The producer will be serving her second consecutive one-year term and was widely expected to take the reins once again. Presidents can serve up to four consecutive one-year terms as long as they are eligible, and Yang is only in her fifth year as a Governor-at-Large and thus conceivably could run again in 2024 and 2025. AMPAS presidents almost always are re-elected without much controversy.
Board officers also were elected, and it will be a group with a lot of new faces compared to 2022. The lineup is as follows:
Bonnie Arnold, Vice President
Howard Berger, Vice President
Brooke Breton, Vice President
Tom Dufffield, Vice President/Treasurer
DeVon Franklin, Vice President

At their Tuesday board meeting, as expected the Academy Board of Governors elected producer Janet Yang president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Yang begins her first term as president and her second term as a Governor-at-Large, a position for which she was nominated by the sitting Academy President David Rubin and elected by the Board of Governors.
Donna Gigliotti, Larry Karaszewski, David Linde, Isis Mussenden, and Wynn Thomas were re-elected as Board of Governor officers. It will be the first officer stint for Teri E. Dorman, 2020 Oscar show co-producer Lynette Howell Taylor, and Kim Taylor-Coleman.

It's become a surprise commercial and critical hit - so what has the new Jumanji film got right?
Spoilers lie ahead for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
Over the weekend, I was back at my local multiplex to see the quite wonderful Coco. On the way in, I saw the manager of said picture palace, and we had a bit of a chat. He’s a friendly man, and just the kind of manager you want: always checks that everyone’s okay, is there if anything goes wrong.
He’s also good for a bit of insider chat, too. And we got talking about Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.
I don’t think I was alone in inwardly sighing when I first learned of a reboot/sequel to Jumanji. I don’t hold massive affection for the original (although I thought Zathura was great), but still enjoyed it.

A couple weeks ago it was announced that Dwayne Johnson had joined the upcoming Jumanji reboot currently in development. It’s been confirmed that the upcoming Jumanji remake will be helmed by the guy who also directed Sex Tape — Jake Kasdan.
Kasdan’s career sways smoothly between movies, including Zero Effect, Friends with Kids, and Bad Teacher, and sitcom TV series such as New Girl, Californication, Ben and Kate, Fresh off the Boat, and others.
At first blush, I wouldn’t really say that he looks like the perfect match for Jumanji (taking into consideration his filmography which consists of more comedic productions), but maybe the idea of him directing the remake will grow on me.
Jumanji is set to hit the big screens on December 25th, 2016.

With my background in blogging taking me pretty close to the world of comic books, I’ve known about Tony Lee and his witty little novel Dodge & Twist for some time. Lee’s big idea was to cook up a sequel to Oliver Twist that saw the Oliver and The Artful Dodger growing up apart and then reuniting for some action-adventure fun.
This basic notion is exactly the same for the film Dodge & Twist. Is this just a coincidence? Lee says not. He posted to his website about how he met Ahmet Zappa, one of the movie’s producers, back in 2007.
But I can say, definitively, that the story similarities are actually pretty slim. I can say this because I’ve read both. They start from the same place – which comes from Dickens in any case, so neither can lay claim to it – and then go off in very different directions.

Jay (Jason Segel) and Annie (Cameron Diaz) used to love to fuck. Having hooked up in college, they would screw in her dorm, in his car, in the library stacks, even behind a tree. Ten years, two kids and one marriage later, that spark has apparently vanished, prompting the desperate couple to film a comprehensive reenactment of “The Joy of Sex” in a bid to get it back. However, this being 2014, their exploits have been filmed with an iPad and not on a video camera, allowing the file to handily vanish into the little-understood Cloud for storage. As a radio DJ, Jay has an unlikely amount of iPads at his disposal and hands them off to friends and family once he’s done with them, and as a mommy blogger, Annie is dreadfully worried that their three-hour lovemaking session might be seen by anyone they’ve given a device, including her wholesome new employer, Hank...

Once upon a time, the upcoming comedy Sex Tape was one of the movies slated to open against the adaptation of 50 Shades Of Grey. However, the team behind the adaptation of E L James' novel clearly blinked first when faced with the might of Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz.

Before digging into early-to-mid August's disc highlights, I'd like to set the Way Back Machine to two weeks ago and point out some eclectic late-July gems we missed, such as Twilight Time's exquisite Blu-ray edition of Walter Hill's 1978 neo-noir "The Driver," Olive Films' unexpected release of Anthony Mann's 1958 brazen, quasi-hicksploitation melodrama "God's Little Acre," and the Warner Archive re-release of 1998's eccentrically funny "Zero Effect," starring Ben Stiller and Bill Pullman as a socially stunted private investigator. From Europe, Raro Video lived up to their name with a rare trilogy of gritty moralist thrillers in "Fernando di Leo: The Italian Crime Collection (Volume 2)," Music Box Films stressed us out with the terrifically icy German thriller "The Silence," and sci-fi didn't get more provocative than the erotic Lithuanian curiosity "Vanishing Waves" (which Artsploitation lovingly packaged as a two-dvd set that includes director Kristina Buozyte's feature debut "The.

It’s nice to see that with yet another incarnation of Sherlock Holmes, we’re at least giving more than the usual, casual nod to the original work. Oh sure, any Sherlock you’ve seen has most of the traits down, and is bound to offer up a Sherlock that is at least “a quirky old bean,” but CBS‘ Elementary goes for broke in delivering the most honest translation of genius as its own damage we’ve seen since The Zero Effect, and who saw that anyway?
Jonny Lee Miller is thus far very nearly perfect as a Holmes who isn’t just observant in the extreme, but who has a mind that closes as many doors as it opens. Now in the United States, after a stint in rehab, Sherlock finds himself with a special sort of “recovery” babysitter named Watson (Lucy Liu). Said babysitter comes to watch over...

The concept of masculinity has been called into question repeatedly over the past decade, and now with men turning to old-fashioned ideals and “Mad Men” re-runs for any sort of guidance, a new book-to-film adaptation, “Man Made,” aims to achieve some answers.
EW reports filmmaker Shawn Levy (“Real Steel”) will produce the film, while Jake Kasdan (“Bad Teacher”) is slated to direct. The project is based off author Joel Stein's non-fiction book of the same name (out in May), and follows an upcoming father who examines his ability to teach his future son proper masculine values. He then sets out to physically and mentally test himself for this purpose, by “riding along on a shift with firefighters, taking on an Mma fighter, going through Marine basic training, and consulting with various tough guys about what it means to be a modern American male.”

Presented in part by Texas Independent Film Network and Screen Door Cinema, Paul Gordon's comedic tale brings us a man with a dream, a hot dog stand, and a desire to provide near-vegetarian fare to the world. And if you miss the Afs screening, it'll play in San Marcos on Sept. 28.

Chicago – If you’re going to be bad, be bad. But this is mainstream Hollywood “product,” starring Cameron Diaz, and while the concept of the new film “Bad Teacher” had promise, it eventually fell down on the weight of happy resolutions and the worse mortal sin for a comedy…it was dull.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Director Jake Kasdan, who has been much more interesting in previous films (”Zero Effect,” “Orange County,” “The TV Set”) gets bogged down with a passive aggressive script, by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, and wastes a pretty talented comic cast. The ensemble gamely tries to deliver some wooden material and despite some individual moments, can’t deliver the overall goodness of the “badness.”
Cameron Diaz is middle school teacher Elizabeth Halsey, who is leaving her job at the John Adams academy, somewhere in Illinois (near Chicago, but never spelled out). She is off to marry her rich...

Here's a riddle for you: What do you call a shitty film peppered with a profanity every 62 seconds featuring the insanely hot body of Cameron Diaz? You call it a shitty movie, dumbass. Don't be so dim, because you're playing right into the hands of Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, the screenwriters of Bad Teacher and the massive brain trust behind the script for Jack Black's Year One. You can almost tell exactly what happened with their screenplay for Bad Teacher, too. It was a terrible, unfunny overly-broad comedy script, and after it was rejected by half a dozen studios, someone got the bright idea to add curse words. It's still a juvenile script, only now it has adult words, essentially a lazy Adam Sandler movie with cusses.

I had high hopes for Bad Teacher. I have always had a thing for dark comedies. It didn’t hurt that director Jake Kasdan (Zero Effect, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story) was helming this project. I imagined something like “Bad Santa”, but with a female lead. As you recall “Bad Santa” starred Billy Bob Thorton in possibly his best role. He was an irredeemable alcoholic thief who poses as Santa to rob various malls. That movie took no prisoners and was not afraid to wallow in the muck. Bad Teacher falls short of these lofty goals, but does provide some laughs. Cameron Diaz stars in basically the Thorton role as Elizabeth Halsey, a teacher at John Adams Middle School. To say that Elizabeth is a nasty piece work would be an understatement. She couldn’t care less about her students, doesn’t bond with any of the other teachers...

We’ve teamed up with MSN FilmFan to discuss the films opening this weekend. We’d love to hear your input on what you’re most interested in seeing and why.
This weekend, Pixar's Cars 2 and possible-Cameron-Diaz-career-revivial Bad Teacher open. Right now, both films are sitting in the tight-roping position of the 50% range on Rotten Tomatoes; considering the wide success of Cars, this isn't a good sign for future sequels. But, then again, there's been no less than three sequels to Pirates Of The Caribbean and it was just announced that On Stranger Tides (33% on Tomatometer) is currently sitting at a worldwide gross of $960,013,548. Bad Teacher director Jake Kasdan has had some cult hits on his hands (Orange County, Zero Effect) and directed a few episodes of Freaks and Geeks, so you already know what I plan on seeing this weekend.

Director Jake Kasdan has been the most recently active member of a very prominent showbiz family, going back to directing the early Ben Stiller movie Zero Effect , followed by stints directing Judd Apatow-produced shows "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared." His last movie was Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story , starring John C. Reilly, which may not have gotten much of an audience in theatres, but if you ask any music buff who's seen it, it's likely to be one of their favorite movies in their DVD collection. Now he's at the helm of Bad Teacher , the new R-rated Cameron Diaz comedy that has her playing Elizabeth Halsey, the title character who just wants to make enough money that she can get a boob job and marry a wealthy guy that can get her away from those...

Today we have two new TV spots feature international trailer and 14 hi-res photos from the upcoming summer comedy Bad Teacher, which arrives in theaters across the country on June 24.
Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake
Cameron Diaz plays foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate teacher Elizabeth. She drinks, she gets high, and she can’t wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job. When she’s dumped by her fiancé, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake) – competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy (Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

You probably didn't see "Zero Effect" when it was released way back in 1998. But you should have--it's one of the most terminally underrated pictures of the last couple of decades, a fearsomely smart, funny, touching rejig of the Sherlock Holmes archetype, with a career best performance from Bill Pullman, and tremendous support from Ben Stiller, Kim Dickens and Ryan O'Neal. And writer-director Jake Kasdan made it when he was only 23. Sure, nepotism might have played some part in getting Kasdan there--his father is Lawrence Kasdan, writer of "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and…...

Chicago – It’s the most wonderful time of the year as moviegoers shake off the doldrums of winter weather, awards season snoozers, and a truly horrendous first trimester of 2011 and finally get to see something blow up for their hard-earned dollars. There’s something about the warm months of the year that allows for critical faculties to fall away as we relax and simply embrace cinematic chaos. What will we get out of Summer 2011? What are the movies that look the most promising? Let us guide the way.
The Tree of Life

Want the bad news first? This could be a brutal summer. Going over the schedule from May through August allows for very few potential highlights. It’s a season crowded with sequels to movies that weren’t really that good in the first place or that were good enough that we don’t really need to repeat it.

Before you even click play on the trailer below I suggest heading on over to our previous post featuring the red-band trailer. That raunchy one has nearly the exact same structure and will give you a better taste of Jake Kasdan‘s R-rated film. The Walk Hard, Orange County, The TV Set, and Zero Effect director helms the script from The Office and upcoming Ghostbusters III writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. Starring Justin Timberlake, Cameron Diaz, and Jason Segel, you can see the theatrical trailer below via Yahoo.

This weekend, Peter and Bobby Farrelly direct the husbands-on-a-break comedy Hall Pass. We decided to look back on the movie that brought the Farrellys’ particular brand of feel-good gross-out humor into the American zeitgeist. There’s Something About Mary was the sleeper hit of 1998, spending most of the summer slowly rising higher on the box office top 10. It kickstarted the careers of stars Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller. But 12 years later, has the movie aged well?

I kid, I kid. The trailer for Bad Teacher, in fact, looks spectacular, if you like foul-mouthed Cameron Diaz, and here she's The Sweetest Thing to the third degree. If you never thought that Diaz was attractive, wait until you hear her reel off a string of profanities, pelt a kid in the head with a basketball, and express a heartfelt desire to sit on Justin Timberlake's face. You may still not find her attractive, but you might find her endearingly foul-mouthed. Plus Justin Timberlake. Plus Phyllis. Two exclamation points.
Yes, it's Bad Santa with a teacher. But who cares? Cameron Diaz is marginally more attractive than Billy Bob Thornton, plus Jake Kasdan directed it, and the man still has a lifetime pass for Zero Effect.
Bad Teacher arrives in theaters on June 24th. And now, you may have something to look forward to this summer besides a string of watered-down comic-book flicks,...

Bad Teacher, which pretty much looks like Bad Santa in a middle school, stars Cameron Diaz as an obnoxious, potty-mouthed "educator" who's a far cry from that sweet girl in There's Something About Mary. Her real-life ex, Justin Timberlake, plays a mild-mannered substitute teacher and the romantic catnip for Diaz's lioness. Jason Segel, acting all Jason Segel-y, plays the gym teacher, and The Office's Phyllis Smith appears to be Diaz's straight woman. It was directed by Jake Kasdan of Zero Effect and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story fame, which bodes well for this one. It's scheduled for a June 24 [...]...

Jake Kasdan should be much bigger than he is. And, no, I don't mean he's a leprechaun. He's not miniature. But he is far more talented than his "place" in the industry would indicate. His work on "Freaks and Geeks" alone should make him a big name. "Zero Effect" is one of those great small movies that seems to be timeless, totally not part of any trend, and with a huge voice. "Orange County" is a low-key charmer, and "The TV Set" is an acutely-observed look at the madness of the entertainment industry, revealing and without sentiment. I think people dismissed...

Remember when you used to like Cameron Diaz? I know, it’s probably been a while, but there was actually a time when she enhanced a film rather than turned it into something you dreaded. The last time she was actually appealing in a film was in the still fantastic My Best Friend’s Wedding. Which came out in 1997. But she is awesome in this new red-band trailer for Jake Kasdan’s upcoming comedy Bad Teacher. Check out the trailer after the jump and tell me if I’m wrong. Fuck my ass indeed. Jason Segal is always fun, Justin Timberlake is a harmless addition to anything (except The Social Network), and the lady from The Office says “fuck.” But the real star here is Diaz’ big dirty mouth. She’s damn funny, full of deliciously foul attitude, and actually manages to look a little bit sexy again. Kasdan debuted strong with the criminally neglected Zero Effect, but...

For the first time since 1994′s The Mask, Cameron Diaz comes across attractive in a film. I present to you the first trailer (a f*ck-filled red band at that) for the upcoming summer comedy Bad Teacher. Jake Kasdan (Orange County, The TV Set, Zero Effect) directs the script from The Office and upcoming Ghostbusters III writers Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg.
Justin Timberlake, who stepped up his acting game in The Social Network this year, co-stars along with Jason Segel. This marks the second R-rated sex comedy this summer for Timberlake, also starring in Friends With Benefits, from Easy A director Will Gluck. He will then star in the highly-anticipated sci-fi thriller Now from Andrew Niccol. Check out the Bad Teacher trailer below via MySpace.

Finally – Here’s the transcript of the phone interview I did with Jeff Clanagan, founder and CEO of CodeBlack Entertainment – maybe the most prominent independent, black-owned and operated vertically-integrated film production and distribution company in the USA.
It was about an hour-long conversation. I apologize for taking so long to post it up. I couldn’t post the audio recording, and so had to get the entire thing transcribed and edited.
Thanks to Cynthia for taking care of it all for me (the transcription and the editing), otherwise it’ll probably still be sitting on my hard drive undone.
And thanks to Jeff for taking the time to talk to me and answer all my (and your submitted) questions.
So, here ya go below, the full transcript, mostly unedited (although there were 1 or two segments I...

Rope of Silicon has provided us with the first two stills from a pair of upcoming Columbia Pictures films. First up is Roland Emmerich doing Shakespeare in Anonymous. Though it be a departure for the 2012 and Independence Day director, we have our first look above featuring Rhys Ifans. The film also stars Joely Richardson, David Thewlis, Xavier Samuel, Rafe Spall, Jamie Campbell-Bower and Derek Jacobi.
Set in the political snake-pit of Elizabethan England, Anonymous speculates on an issue that has for centuries intrigued academics and brilliant minds ranging from Mark Twain and Charles Dickens to Henry James and Sigmund Freud, namely: who was the author of the plays credited to William Shakespeare? Experts have debated, books have been written, and scholars have devoted their lives to protecting or debunking theories surrounding the authorship of the most renowned works in English literature. Anonymous poses one possible answer, focusing on a time when cloak-and-dagger political intrigue,...

Each year for the past three, we here at Pajiba have compiled our Annual (Sh)it List, something of a riff on Entertainment Weekly's "It List," which explicates the ten trends, people, ideas, etc. of the year that annoy the hell out of us. We usually post the (Sh)it List during the early party of each year, but for whatever reason, the Guide escaped us this year. It's normally a group effort, but it occurred to me this morning that we missed it, it's late in the year now, and with the holidays approaching, it's too much to ask the rest of the crew here to commit to an organized, collective effort. I apologize.
However, for the sake of continuity, and so we can successfully bring back the 5th Annual (Sh)it List in 2011 as a group, I've taken it upon myself to compile a quick (Sh)it List for the archives.

This is one of those common sense posts where it's often nevertheless enlightening to see actual numbers to back up obvious theories. Of the five actors currently best known for making broad comedies right now, there are still movies that each of them have made that most of us adore: Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love, Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction, Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Carell in Little Miss Sunshine and Stiller in The Royal Tenenbaums. We know they're capable of making good films and, indeed, the list of smaller, more dramatic roles on each of these gentlemen's resumes is (mostly) impressive.
So why do they continue to make broad stupid comedies that make many of us hate them all the more? For the same reason many of us would. The money, of course. But what's the real-dollar difference between making a 90-minute fart joke and baring your soul?...

If you thought you had to wait until Nov. 8 to see the next incarnation of the Conan O'Brien Chuckle-hut -- and considering that's what Conan has been telling us now for, oh, every hour on the hour for the last 4,776 hours, no one would blame you for assuming that -- some bad news: You were wrong. O'Brien will host Internet-only test show on Nov. 1, titled "Show Zero" (no relation to 1998 Bill Pullman movie, Zero Effect, but I wish there were). Oh, well that's actually good news. Assume we can expect pretty much the same show that we'll see one week later when Conan premieres, only without Tom Hanks and with people shooting silly string. At least that's what the promo tells us. Click ahead to watch.

I think that this post feels more like a comment diversion than a Seriously Random List, given how subjective our strong dislike of certain actors is, so consider the five listed examples below as a starting point for a diversion about "Actors We Strongly Dislike in Roles We Love." (Hate feels a little over-strong today.) That is to say, rather than begin your comment with, "I can't believe you left off ________ in ______, you fucking cock-slobbering douchevillain. I will burn down your house with your family inside, you insufferable simpleton!" maybe just offer your own examples relative to the actors that you dislike. It makes for a much more enjoyable exercise, and I won't have to post guards outside my house.
Keep in mind, too, that I'm referring to roles you love, not roles that you tolerate or think are decent enough. I mean: Reallyfuckingdig.

Justin Timberlake is a fucking great actor, especially when asked to play comedically. Chug a motherfucking liter of Haterade and choke on the baby bitch at the bottom of the bottle, because this is a truer statement than you may ever read. Maybe the damn Disney club knows what they're doing occasionally?
