Not Carrott's best work

Warning: Spoilers
American Carrott features bizarre sketches in which Carrott travels around various locations in America. These are inter-cut with Carrott 's live stand-up act. Surprisingly this was broadcast on Channel 4 instead of the BBC, which was the output for most of Carrott's work.

The sketches feature a loose narrative of Carrott on tour in America, meeting various people and visiting various places. The sketches feature typical American location such as: a diner, hotel room and an Evangelical church. These sketches are heavy on stereotypes and don't feature many laughs. The sketches are unusual enough to work and the acting is decent enough throughout. One of the best sketches involves Carrott meeting a band in the hotel by request of a manager who wants them to trash the place for publicity (this sketch was clearly inspired by This Is Spinal Tap). The sketches are merely there to break-up the stand-up but give the programme some originality. The stand-ups hit and miss. It features Carrott telling jokes based on American culture and British/American culture clashes to an appreciative American audience.

Summary: Not Jasper Carrott's best work. I thought Back to the Front and some of his other shows were much stronger. The programme is funny but only in places and Carrott is on good form with his delivery and acting. The sketches also add a quirky element to the show. I would definitely recommend this to fans but there's not enough to recommend it to casual viewers.
