In the frozen north

The previous two 1946 Popeye cartoons ('House Tricks?' and 'Service with a Guile'), the first two made and released after the war, were very enjoyable and well-made, particularly 'House Tricks?' Both comparing favourably when it comes to the output of Famous Studios when they took over from Fleischer Studios and continued the Popeye cartoons from 1942 to 1957. None though being one of the best or my favourites of the Popeye cartoons, which to me is generally a good series.

'Klondike Casanova' is also a good Popeye cartoon, but at the same time it was a touch disappointing. The previous 1946 cartoons having fresher material and more of the surprise factor. It is recommended certainly and worth a look at least once, but it is not a patch on particularly the late-30s Popeye cartoons from the Fleischer period of the series (to me the prime period of the series, the best of them being excellent and near-classic).

Its strengths and flaws are very similar to before. To me, as is common with the series Olive has very little to do, and her material and her character are not near as funny or as interesting as Popeye and Bluto. The surprises and freshness are present more in other Popeye cartoons, especially previous ones but even some since too, with an outcome that is easily predicted too soon

Jack Mercer, on temporary military duty at the time, not voicing Popeye takes getting used to and personally never properly did. Harry Welch is not bad, he does amuse and Popeye is as likeable as ever, but Mercer relished the asides and mumblings (which are hardly unfunny still) more and did more with them.

Popeye though is as amusing and likeable, while Bluto on villain duty (not unsurprisingly) is even funnier and even more interesting. Their chemistry really carries 'Klondike Casanova' and has considerable energy and sees a lot of amusing if not hilarious moments between them. When it comes to the gags, they are numerous and none of them misfire, just that there isn't really anything hilarious and they can be predictable. While the story may be a somewhat formulaic one, it is elevated by the chemistry between Popeye and Bluto.

Moreover, there is enough visual detail in the animation to not make it cluttered or static and lively and smooth movement. The music is also outstanding, lots of merry energy and lush orchestration, adding a lot to the action and making the impact even better without being too cartoonish. Mae Questel and especially Jackson Beck come over very well voicing Olive and Bluto.

Altogether, nice enough but not great. 7/10

Popeye and Olive Oyl run a theater and bar in the Klondike. Olive does the performing and the dishes. Fearsome Dan McBluto walks in and sweeps her off her feet. Popeye gets jealous. McBluto gets too rough. He kidnaps Olive back to his fur farm.

This is a standard Popeye love triangle short up until it gets to the bears. It's fine to make Bluto a villain but the fur farm has two flaws. First, Popeye should be working to free the bears. It's a different time but it makes more sense even back then. It would make Popeye the good guy who saves the bears while Bluto is the bad guy who brutalizes them. It definitively puts them on opposite sides. Second, they should be polar bears. The fear would be white bears with white backgrounds but that's not that difficult.

Pretty typical except for the locale and the garish colors.

"Klondike Casanova" is a Popeye cartoon made after the Fleischer Brothers stopped animating him and Paramount's Famous Studios took over. Like these later cartoons, it's in color...but they sure chose some odd and occasionally garish colors. Regardless, the plot is pretty typical of a Popeye cartoon...except for the locale and Bluto's French-Canadian accent!

The story begins in an odd saloon run by Popeye and Olive up in the Klondike during the gold rush...odd because they only seem to serve ice cream sodas and sandwiches. When Dangerous Dan McBluto arrives, everyone runs...except for the proprietors. As you'd expect, McBluto makes eyes at Olive and she reciprocates. Then, when he tries to grope her and she objects, McBluto abducts her and it's implied he's going to force himself on her! And, as you'd expect, Popeye gives chase and stops Bluto from committing yet another felony.

This is pretty much the same plot as 80 or more percent of all the Popeye cartoons. Reasonably well animated and no real surprises her...aside from Olive Oyl doing what appears to the audience as a striptease before McBluto arrives.

It seems pretty cool that the Popeye & Olive team can wash a sink full of . . .

. . . dishes or entirely prepare and serve a dinner order while elongating a note of their musical entertainment number during KLONDIKE CASANOVA. Many world music "artists" would be sure to benefit from this performance technique. For instance, I would like to have Slim Shady prolonging middle Cee while he fixed and brought me a grilled cheese sandwich. (These must be made with hard cheese sliced from a wheel or brick, and NOT the insipid "cheese-like" product manufactured by the trillions wrapped as individual slices. Also, including a generous sprinkling of raw onion on the buttered bread with the cheese is bound to enhance viewers' dining experience.)
