The global impact of traditional tattooing and the need to end its stigma is explored in upcoming feature-documentary “Treasure of the Rice Terraces,” directed by Filipino-Canadian Kent Donguines.
The film sees Donguines embark on a journey of self-discovery and record the oral history recounted by 106-year-old Indigenous tattoo artist Apo Whang-Od, who was recently an unlikely cover star of Vogue Philippines.
The film explores how the old practises in the Kalinga region, once banned and despised in Philippine society, have now evolved into a chic and in-demand type of body art that has become a source of pride and belonging for many Filipinos. It also delves into the issues of stolen mummified bodies, cultural appropriation, stigmatization, and discrimination faced by tattooed individuals.
Now shooting in Manila and the mountainous Kalinga region, the film is directed by Donguines and written by Donguines and Zlatina Pacheva (“Run the Burbs,” “Kim’s Convenience”).

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “Treasure Protectors,” the season finale of “National Treasure: Edge of History,” now streaming on Disney+.
In the first “National Treasure” movie, Nicolas Cage’s Ben Gates justifies stealing the Declaration of Independence by telling the authorities he is a treasure protector — but that was so 2004.
In the Disney+ spinoff series “National Treasure: Edge of History,” the latest threat to this country’s lost history is from treasure destroyers, specifically a group known as Cras Est Nostrum. This faction hunts down and destroys treasure to avoid the messy business of having to rewrite history.
Billie (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and her specific brand of brute force has been the group’s muscle this season in pursuing Montezuma’s Treasure, which she calls a “political powderkeg” if found. And in this week’s season finale, she deciphers the final clue by kidnapping Jess (Lisette Olivera) and her...

It's perhaps no coincidence that John Huston's 1948 film "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" came out the same year that comic book publisher William Gaines took control of EC Comics and began to work the company away from its original moniker, Educational Comics, to a much more commercially viable model -- Entertaining Comics. Both "Treasure" and the books that came out of EC in the late-'40s had a lurid horror bent, exploring the darker recesses of the human soul.
"Treasure" is about a trio of men who trek into a forbidding, hot wilderness to look for gold. As soon as gold is struck, each of the three men begins to eyeball each other suspiciously, instantly paranoid of being double-crossed. There will be multiple opportunities for each of the men to dispose of another and take a larger share of gold. It's a tale of the corrupting power of greed,...

After adding $12.3 million from 4,275 theaters on Sunday, Sony/Columbia’s “Uncharted” is set to take a $51 million extended opening at the box office on this Presidents Day weekend, a solid start for this $120 million blockbuster considering the lingering effects of the pandemic on movie theaters.
Despite weak reviews, “Uncharted” got strong numbers with audiences with a B+ on CinemaScore and a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with special praise placed on Tom Holland in his first major blockbuster performance outside of the “Spider-Man” films.
As with other hit films in the past year, the stronger-than-expected numbers were driven by younger, male audiences. Demographics data from Sony reports that 63% of opening weekend audiences were male, with 45% under the age of 25. Premium formats also played a factor with 36% of tickets sold being screenings on Imax and other premium screens.

In “Uncharted,” now in theaters, Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), and his somewhat begrudging new partner Sully (Mark Wahlberg) hop from country to country, looking for the proverbial X that marks the spot of Magellan’s purported lost gold. So, is that treasure actually real?
In most treasure hunt movies, the answer is no. There’s no stash of Free Mason treasure underneath Trinity Church in New York, as “National Treasure” suggested. The faberge eggs that supposedly belonged to Cleopatra, as introduced in “Red Notice,” never existed. But “Uncharted” is a bit different.
Granted, it doesn’t deviate much from the standard treasure hunt plot. Based on the PlayStation and Naughty Dog video games, “Uncharted” sees Nathan Drake and Sully going to a lot of different places, doing a whole lot of stunts along the way, and getting bamboozled by real and fake clues alike.

Nicolas Cage does not want you to see him singing in the purple rain. As part of The Hollywood Reporter's annual Actor Roundtable, the National Treasure actor admitted that he's hung up the mic for good after a video of him singing one of Prince's iconic hits surfaced online in April 2019. "For me, karaoke was like therapy until someone videotaped my punk-rock version of Prince's 'Purple Rain' and it went everywhere," he told fellow panelists Jonathan Majors, Andrew Garfield, Peter Dinklage and Simon Rex, "and I said, 'I'm not going to karaoke anymore.'" Garfield immediately encouraged Cage to grab the...
