A few weeks ago, Fontaines D.C. dropped “Starburster,” the uninhibited lead single off of their recently announced fourth album, Romance, out August 23. In anticipation of the upcoming album cycle, the Irish post-punk band spontaneously announced a one-off show at Warsaw in Brooklyn, and tickets sold out in mere minutes. When the day of the show came, a line of Fontaines devotees wrapped around the block of the Greenpoint venue on an 85-degree May evening, buzzing with feverish excitement.

Lana shocked the Coachella crowd Friday night by bringing out Camila Cabello for an energy-shifting performance of her hyper pop single “I Luv It.”
“This is my girl. I have so much fun with her. I love this song to death,” Del Rey said after coquettishly repeating the song’s chorus early in her set. “Thank you so much angel for coming to sing with me.”

The gasps in Fontaines D.C.’s new song, “Starburster,” tell its whole story: Frontman Grian Chatten suffered a panic attack in a London tube station and decided to chronicle that feeling on a funky, disco-rock track. After refrains of “It may feel bad,” he unleashes an onslaught of stream-of-consciousness worries, including “I wanna bite the phone, I wanna bleed the tone/I wanna see you alone, alone, alone.” The drums keep things going on the song, which will appear on their upcoming fourth album, Romance (out Aug. 23), until he comes to the realization,...

Fontaines D.C. have unveiled details for their fourth album, Romance, due out August 23rd via Xl Recordings. As a preview, the band has unveiled the lead single, “Starburster.” Watch the music video for the new song below.
Romance follows the band’s celebrated 2022 release Skinty Fia and seeks to further push Fontaines D.C. into new sonic and thematic territory. Incorporating elements of hip-hop, shoegaze, grunge, and more, the album continues the Irish act’s reflections on nationality, identity, and notions of idealism. Notably, Romance also marks the band’s first collaboration with Consequence’s 2023 Producer of the Year James Ford.
“We’ve always had this sense of idealism and romance,” guitarist Conor Deegan stated. “Each album gets further away from observing that through the lens of Ireland, as directly as Dogrel. The second album (A Hero’s Death) is about that detachment, and the third (Skinty Fia) is...

The long wait is over: Patricia Arquette finally explained David Lynch’s “Lost Highway.” Kind of.
“I would ask David: ‘Am I playing two characters, am I playing a ghost?’ He would say: ‘What do you think, Patrish?’ It’s a woman looked at through the distorted view of a psychotic misogynist,” she said at Series Mania.
“He hates women, he doesn’t quite trust her, even though she is his wife. He kills her but can’t remember it, then he recreates himself as this virile young man and meets her again. And now, she actually wants to fuck him and she is in love with him. But even in this version, she is a dirty whore.”
“In this man’s mind, a woman is always the monster. No matter what. I thought about Jezebel and Salomé for this part, all these bad girls of the Bible.”

In 2023, the Berlin Film Festival saw the resignation of Executive Director Mariette Rissenbeek and the ousting of Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian, a move that doubled as a rejection of Chatrian’s thoughtful curation that marched to the beat of its own drum. The Toronto International Film Festival saw the loss of its major sponsor after a 28-year partnership as well as layoffs in December. The Venice Film Festival saw a change in leadership with the appointment of a far-right figure as head of the Biennale, a choice from the country’s right-wing government that already has people nervous as to what the 2024 festival might look like. Then you have various film festival cancellations, for reasons both political and financial.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week we take a look at Britney Spear's I'm A Slave 4 U and Lady Gaga's Bad Romance, both by Francis Lawrence. There is a moment in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, in which heroine Katniss Everdeen is forced to go on stage in a dress that sets aflame like a Phoenix. She is wildly uncomfortable, but the moment seals her fate: this is where she becomes a star, and the rest of the franchise is her dealing with the repercussions of being someone in the public eye in a fascist dystopia. Is she one of the people in power, or the girl who will shake...

(Welcome to Did They Get It Right?, a series where we look at Oscars categories from yesteryear and examine whether the Academy's winners stand the test of time.)
Making a movie is hard. A shocking statement, I know. When you direct a film, you are utilizing a tremendous amount of your time and energy to devote to a project that more often than not takes years of your life. So, when a director releases two films in the same year, I'm always impressed that they had the bandwidth to turn these films around so quickly. The rarest of the rare, though, is when the director gets nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Director for multiple films within the same year.
The first was at the 2nd ceremony, when Frank Lloyd received three of the seven nominations for "Drag," "Weary River," and "The Divine Lady," for which he won. The...

Swedish-born Greta Garbo became a star with a string of hit films throughout the 1920s and 1930s before disappearing from screens in 1941 at the age of 36. Though she appeared in only a handful of titles, enough have remained classics to give her a special place in history. Let’s take a look back at 10 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1905, Garbo got her start in the silent era, acting in her native Sweden before coming to Hollywood at the behest of MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer. She soon became a popular presence on the silver screen as a romantic leading lady. Her performance in “Flesh and the Devil” (1926) as a seductress who tears two friends apart proved she was a woman to die for.
Since English was not her first language, Mayer was rightfully nervous that the emergence of sound would destroy one of his biggest stars.

“Riverdale” became a pop cultural phenom in the late ’10s, but that doesn’t mean the show hasn’t been exempt from criticism.
The cast recently chatted up a storm with Vulture, where they divulged their thoughts about the progression of the series’ arguably ridiculous storylines.
Lili Reinhart, who plays Betty Cooper on the CW series, opened the conversation by admitting “our show is made fun of a lot,” acknowledging the boatload of “Riverdale Cringe” compilations available on TikTok and YouTube.

Sex on film is nothing new, and yet unsimulated intercourse in non-pornographic movies continues to raise eyebrows and draw eyeballs. From Vincent Gallo’s controversial directing for “Brown Bunny” to Robert Pattinson’s masturbatory method acting in”Little Ashes,” genuine intimate encounters captured on film — however staged they may be — can pull audiences into the bigger stories their writers and directors are trying to tell.
Catherine Breillat’s first film in 1976, “A Real Young Girl,” adapts her own controversial novel about a 14-year-old exploring her newfound sexuality. Breillat’s later work, 1999’s “Romance,” tells the story of a woman desperately seeking human connection and featured similar scenes, including sadomasochistic sex play.
“Actors are prostitutes because they’re asked to play other feelings,” Breillat told IndieWire. “This prostitution is not profane; it’s a sacred act that we give them.”

Comedy is back; Super Mario Bros has proved that laughs are good for a half billion dollars.
The antihero business is intact. Both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 and John Wick: Chapter 4 hit their marks.

The life of adult film star Rocco Siffredi is the subject of a forthcoming Netflix series called Supersex.
The show, which has started shooting in Italy, will be a seven-episode drama inspired by the real life of Siffredi, who has over 1,500 porn films to his name.
Siffredi took his stage name from the character Roch Siffredi played by Alain Delon in the French gangster film Borsalino.
He is famously known for appearing in the Buttman series of adult movies.
In June 2004, Siffredi declared that he would retire from porn films for the sake of his children, and instead focus on direction and production.
“My children are growing up,” he said at the time, adding: “I can no longer just say ‘Dad is going to work to make money for the family.’ They want to know more.”
During his career, Siffredi also shot two arthouse pics, Catherine Breillat’s Romance and Anatomy of Hell.

Emo kids, rejoice! My Chemical Romance have released their first new song since 2014. The band surprise dropped the song, "The Foundations of Decay," on May 12. Their last song, "Fake Your Death," was originally supposed to be part of their fifth album, but they never completed the project and included the track on their greatest-hits compilation instead.
"The Foundations of Decay" comes one week before the band restart their reunion tour. Technically, the tour began in 2019, but MCR only played one show in Los Angeles before the tour was put on pause due to the pandemic. First, they'll make stops in Europe before traveling to America in August. They're also booked for quite a few summer festivals, including Riot Fest and When We Were Young.

Catherine Breillat doesn’t make porn. Anyone familiar with the 73-year-old French auteur knows her frank portraits of female sexuality are complex, often transcendent explorations of desire through a metaphysical lens. That impulse extends back to Brelliat’s first film in 1976, “A Real Young Girl,” in which she adapted her own controversial novel about a 14-year-old’s sexual awakening. It has stayed with her through the decades in everything from “Fat Girl” to “Sex Is Comedy,” which fictionalizes the discomfort of shooting a sex scene.
Many of those movies are included in a new 11-film Breillat retrospective at New York’s IFC Center, but none epitomize Breillat’s daring aesthetic more than 1999’s “Romance,” the absorbing story of a young woman named Marie who finds catharsis from her sexless relationship with her boyfriend in a series of ambitious trysts. One of these leads to her rape; another inspires her revenge.

It was very late at night in Korea when Wi Ha-jun popped on a video call to chat with Deadline about his role in Netflix’s mega hit Squid Game, and how his life has been turned upside down since the Korean-language series entered the cultural stratosphere last month.
For those who live under a rock, Squid Game is a survival drama set in Seoul, where hundreds of financially strapped contestants signed away their life rights to play children’s games for a chance at winning a $38 million grand prize. Lose any round and be prepared for a grisly death.
Since debuting last month, the series directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk quickly reached No. 1 on Netflix in 90 countries within its first 10 days. Currently, Squid Game is on track to become Netflix’s biggest non-English-language series and possibly supplant Bridgerton’s as the streamer’s biggest show of all time.

This Vikings review contains spoilers.
Vikings Season 6 Episode 16
“The gods work in mysterious ways.”
Amidst a plethora of intense soul searching, Vikings finds itself weighted down in a morass of despair, self-loathing, and regret. And while introspection and personal assessment are necessary growth elements for both characters and storylines, “The Final Straw” plods along before finally revealing the next move for Ivar the Boneless.
With Kjetill and the other Greenlanders in the rear view mirror, Vikings leaves that thread behind, at least for the time being, and hopefully brings some closure to Floki’s Icelandic debacle. Of all the Lothbrok sons, Ubbe has always come across as the most level headed and ethically sound, so it’s extremely painful to watch what’s left of his group flounder at sea while he struggles not only with his faith in the gods but the responsibility he feels for the decision to leave Greenland so abruptly.

Tekno’s “Neighbour” is glinting and sinuous, rapture in motion. Two guitars skirmish behind a polyrhythmic beat; the guitars keep shifting their approach, flaring then dying like a fire in a stiff breeze, while the drum models constancy, tapping out a simple two-part pattern with stubborn persistence. Tekno strings light vocal lines on top of this foundation, occasionally doubling his voice to add oomph. Once in a while a cymbal shatters the spell, reminding the listener not to take all this casual proficiency for granted.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards are held in 2021, but the eligibility period for these kudos celebrating the best in music actually started on September 1, 2019, ending on August 31, 2020. So who will win Album of the Year?
This eligibility period is new for the Grammys. The recording academy moved up their calendar in 2020 in response to the Oscars, which moved their ceremony up to early February, which was when the Grammys usually aired. So the Grammys shifted their telecast to early January and adopted an eligibility calendar that ended a month earlier.

But that’s not the only change the Grammys have undergone in recent years. For the 61st annual event held in 2019, the academy expanded its top four general field categories from five nominees to eight in part as a response to criticisms over a lack of diversity among the nominees and winners.

Torrance Coombs is starring in a romantic summer movie on Hallmark this Sunday called Romance In the Air, and we had a chance to chat with him.
Torrance has been a TV Fanatic favorite for years. His resume included spots on The Tudors and Still Star-Crossed, and The Originals, and starred for years as one of King Henry's sons, Bash, on Reign.
All of that keeps him pretty busy, even in 2020. Just the other day, he was online with his male castmates from Reign courtesy of Wizard World on Twitch.
He's so fun to watch because he seems like he's only half-serious. He's got a great sense of humor, which you can read on his face.
