Netflix said Thursday that it is turning Sulwe, the bestselling children’s book by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, into an animated musical, the latest move by the streamer to bolster its feature animation slate that already includes Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10½: A Space Age Adventure, Henry Selick’s Wendell & Wild, Nora Twomey’s My Father’s Dragon and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio among others.
Sulwe, written by Nyong’o with illustrations by Vashti Harrison, follows Sulwe, a child who has skin darker than anyone she knows — and all she wants is to be beautiful and bright. One night, she is visited by a shooting star sent by the Night and embarks on a magical journey where she learns the eye-opening story of the sisters Night and Day. The book tells a story about colorism, self-esteem and learning that true beauty comes from within.

Extolling the popularity of Redwall books is all well and good but it’s easy to hope that Netflix will be the big boost that this series will need since it’s very true that the books have been popular for a while now, but when asking anyone just off the street about them it’s also easy to think that a lot of people won’t know what you’re talking about. This is the thing about entertainment in any form, it’s not always going to be universal knowledge to every person, but there are likely to be some folks meandering around that might

Sometimes, good things come to those who wait. Nearly four years ago at this very site, I wrote a lengthy essay arguing that the next great film or TV series was waiting for any studio to adapt, in the form of the Redwall series by the late author Brian Jacques. The series, which posits an adventurous […]

In big news for fans of Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, Netflix announced today that an animated adaptation of the beloved book series is in the works. This is not the first time the Redwall story has been adapted in an animated format, as an animated series covered the first three Redwall books in the 1990s. […]

Netflix is adapting Brian Jacques’ beloved “Redwall” children’s books into animated movies and a TV series, the streaming service said Wednesday.
A feature film based on “Redwall,” the first book in Jacques’ series, is currently in development with Patrick McHale writing the script, as is an event series based on Martin the Warrior.
Readers can see visual development art for the projects, provided by Netflix, in the image above by artist Pierre Breton.
Chronicling the adventures of the heroic animals that inhabit the forest haven of Redwall Abbey, the “Redwall” books have sold more than 30 million copies and been translated into more than 20 languages.
Netflix secured the rights to “Redwall” in a deal with Penguin Random House Children’s UK, marking the first time that the film rights to the entire book series have been held by the same company and the first time a feature film of any...

Brian Jacques’ beloved “Redwall” books are being adapted into a feature film and TV series thanks to a new rights deal between Netflix and Penguin Random House Children. The fantasy novels have sold 30 million copies globally and have attracted an avid following with their tales of heroism, villainy and derring do all played out by mice, moles, hares and badgers. Think J.R.R. Tolkien with cuddlier protagonists.
Netflix announced it has enlisted Patrick McHale, creator of Cartoon Network’s “Over the Garden Wall,” to write the feature film. That film will be based on Jacques’ first book in the series, “Redwall”. Netflix is also developing an event series based on the character of Martin the Warrior.
The deal marks the first time that the film rights to the entire book series have been held by the same company and the first time a feature film of any of Jacques’ works will be made.

Netflix has snapped up the rights to Brian Jacques’ entire series of Redwall books and is plotting an animated feature film and TV series based on the animal adventure franchise.
Netflix inked a deal with Penguin Random House Children for the rights to the books, which have sold 30 million copies worldwide and chronicle the adventures of the heroic animals that inhabit the forest haven of Redwall Abbey.
It is the first time that the film rights to the entire series of books have been held by one company and Netflix has already set to work adapting the stories, signing up Patrick McHale to write a feature. Below you'll find some animation that was created on on the Unreal engine showing how Fox's cancelled Mouse Guard movie could have looked like.
Its production was canceled due to the merger of Disney and Fox.
Similar to Redwall, Mouse Guard is an American bi-monthly comic book series written and illustrated by David Petersen and published by Archaia Studios Press.
Differently from American standard comics size, it is published in a square format.

Pitch a children’s movie to a studio about a mouse, a secret order of superintelligent rats, a bumbling crow, and their adventures on a farm and chances are they might go for it. Such was the basic premise of The Secret of Nimh, except the tone and imagery within makes it a bit too much for most children; this might explain its poor box office performance back in 1982. It’s not the idea that doesn’t work, as many children’s stories have centered on rodents and their adventures, and something similar in plot and theme was the basis of Brian Jacques’s Redwall books which would follow The Secret of Nimh four years later. No, The Secret of Nimh sits in its own corner because it attempts a tone and style most weren’t and still aren’t looking for in a film for kids.

The recently released Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole trailer shows all kinds of owl on owl action, and not in the Animal Planet kind of way.
To be honest I really had absolutely no interest in this film. Personally I don't care for movies involving animals that act incredibly like humans. They seem odd to me and at this point feel way over done. The last movie I enjoyed like this was the old 2D animated Secret of Nimh. Even with Zack Snyder (arguably my favorite director after seeing Watchmen) helming this one, I found it hard to muster up any excitement.
After seeing this trailer, I can say I don't really have that problem anymore. Frankly the film looks gorgeous, and even though we're dealing with birds going to war, Snyder's typical art style (slow-mo and everything) are still showing through. Unlike their teaser trailer, this...
